Title: Computer Overheating
Post by: Box on April 22, 2013, 08:33:23 AM
Hi, new user, I'm just waiting for the litecoin client to download all the way. I read on a website that mining litecoin could cause my laptop to overheat, is that going to happen? I have a 2.3Ghz retina display mac.

Im still a newbie but I dont think its worth it mining with a laptop.....   And it might be an issue over heating..  My desktop overheats with the side of the case off so......

Laptop mining is bad

mining on a laptop is a bad plan, they're not designed to run 100% CPU for a long period of time.

Even some desktop PCs struggle - one of my miners melts if I put the case side on, though it is running a HD6970 doing Bitcoins, and a dual core Pentium doing Litecoins.  But, it is a really cheap and nasty microATX tower case, really wasn't designed for that sort of use.

Yeah you will turn your laptop into Mt. Doom

You could order a jalapeno from butterfly labs and mine with that attached to your laptop

the cpu clock on the mac clocks down when the temperature is too high...
but its really a bad idea ;)

I have a laptop that hardly heats up. However, with mining, I can begin to feel the heat. It uses up your laptop computational resource.

mining with a laptop is not worth it!! don't even bother.

may want to look into purchasing an ASIC device and attach that to your laptop.

He is trying to mine Litecoins. ASIC would not help much with this.

And, yes, any using laptop for mining is not a good idea.
I wasn't even aware that notebook GPUs support OpenCL.

Laptops are great for internet browsing, email etc. Not much good for anything else.

well using a) a laptop and b) a mac which have heating problems, you should not use it for 100% mining. maybe downlock and lower the intensity helps

Perhaps you should use a profitability calculator to see if it is even worth mining at your hashrate:
here is one: https://www.litecoinpool.org/calc

As everybody says, it's a bad idea!

I would stay away from LTC mining on a laptop. Although it would probably shut down before any serious damage, it still might give you a bad Apple ;).

bad idea,
with current rise in difficulty ...
on desktop i3 I have about 20kH, depending on your proc it will be similar
plus the problem with heat
and also don't try to use notebook graphic card like 7970m (it's actually more like desktop 7870)
it has TDP approximately 100W and during mining you will use them all
probably they don't expect in the notebook design using it at 100% 24/7

u will destroy your pc. For the beginning u can order an jalapeno or if u dont like to wait, create an rig

Not to be a dick, but the fact that you included "retina display" made me laugh pretty hard. :P

This is false. You cannot use ASICs available currently with Litecoin. The algorithm is different.
