Title: How would affect a Bitcoin Unlimited hardfork on Electrum wallets?
Post by: aircrusan on March 17, 2017, 11:09:09 PM
Hi!

I'm sure most of you have read about this:

http://www.coindesk.com/bitcoin-exchanges-unveil-emergency-hard-fork-contingency-plan/

But I'm not sure how this would affect to electrum wallets...

As far as I know if there is a hardfork to bring bitcoin unlinmited alive, then there will be two bitcoins (the nowadays bitcoin and the unlimited bitcoin) so everybody will double their bitcoins however half of them will be at nowadays bitcoin (BTC) chain and the other half will be at bitcoin unlimited (BTU) chain.

So I supose that electrum will need to have a second wallet to get access to our BTU new coins... is that correct?  ??? ??? ???

In a fork, your existing coin won't be doubled but the rules (max coin cap) can change. One of the fork will simply die off or become an alt-coin. Only merchants supporting Bitcoin Unlimited can allow you to send the Bitcoins to them. If no merchants supports it, then your Bitcoin Unlimited coins are useless.

AFAIK, Electrum connects to several servers to get blockheader so you need to remove every server that does not support Bitcoin Unlimited.

there is already another topic in this board about this possibility and there are answers there:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1825035.0

also this is what the developer said:
With the current version, the only way is to choose a server that you trust to be on the side of the fork you want. (disable auto-connect)

Right after the hard fork, we will be able to make a new release, that includes a checkpoint, because the block headers will differ.

Thanks for this one dude. I am also interested to what will happen in our coins when the hardfork happens because I also use Electrum as my main desktop wallet. It is so good to see that the developer is still involved in this project and he finds time to answer question here in Bitcointalk. I'll just have to monitor this section for more information for the hardfork and its effect to our beloved wallet.

Thanks for writing up the documentation on how to split coins. It looks like a fairly straight forward process in case the split happens soon.

Since you the creator of Electrum did put this option into place things are looking serious that soon we may have a BU fork. Well it's good that you already prepared Electrum users for such change when it will happen.

ROFL. you just made a conclusion out of thin air. and the funny part is that not only you don't know what is going on around you in bitcoin world but also you didn't even read the documents in that link. it even states that "...that the probability of a BU hard fork is fairly low...."

Though as you've said, hard fork has a fairly low chance of pushing through, it is always a good approach to have a plan when it happened. Thanks for providing the document and the instructions are simple enough to follow. This will be very helpful to all the Electrum users moving forward.

Percentage of blocks signalling Bitcoin Unlimited support hit 44% within the last week which is pretty close to 51%, but it hasn't been sustained and its down to about 35% now. There is still certainly a possibility of it happening so its good to prepare whatever the chances may be.

Dear Geeks:

ABC 123 instructions are needed about how to set up things in electrum to prepare just in case a hardfork suddenly appears.

These are the kind of instructions needed by every non-geek who invested in bitcoin and was wise enough to use Electrum.

If you help me with this and give me these easy 123 ABC instructions, then I can introduce Electrum to buyers of any cryptocurrency information pkg. I offer in the future.

It will greatly help people not only on this forum, but elsewhere in the crypto currency world.

Thanks,

Global Protection
