Title: Newbie question, controlling multi-rig setups?
Post by: bobbobobbo on April 22, 2013, 05:01:30 PM
So I see a bunch of posters with their many multiple rigs all in a nice formation, etc. Quick questions...

Do each of those rigs have their own hard drives, with their own id and wallet, etc? Or all they all running together somehow, all to one screen?

Many of them use flash drives...

flash drives as their main hard drives? so they just clone for all of them?

Still curious....

Yep; they generally use flash drives loaded with something like BAMT - a dedicated BTC mining Linux distro - or some other Linux distribution with all of the drivers, applications, and settings needed to mine.

Most of the time, these miners don't have their own wallets: instead, they connect to a pool, so all they need is a miner and an internet connection.

Ahh that makes sense. So all coins found send to a consolidated online wallet.

What if they want to check the status of a specific rig? Just plug a monitor in one by one? Or a large monitor switch?

My boxes run Windoze.  I just RDP to them if I want to see what's going on, but generally unless I spot a problem in the stats (I use Slush's pool) then there is no need.

I tried to get BAMT going and, despite being very proficient with Linux, couldn't even get the USB key to build properly.  Much as it pains me to say it, GUIminer on Windows 'just works'.

all the rigs probably mine in pool so they don't need wallets...
you could run some kind of linux from USB drive so then rig doesn't need to have a hard drive...
