This is joke. 75k for hacking.

I expected to ask much more considering 300 million phones and iCloud account are in the wipe out list for the hackers. This is fake first small amount of cash no one will take them serious second if they want to be serious they should ask one dollar per phone and account or at least 10 cents then it will be around 3 million in ransom quite good figure for this.

This will be very funny at the end.

Bitcoin always gets highlighted when things like this happen, but reading the article they say that there is little to no evidence / proof so what gets me is why bother doing the story until at least it can be substantiated, it's all about sensationalism nowadays in the press.

this is so funny. and the story is full of holes, people notice the amount they demanded and why not installed ransomeware as Spoetnik mentioned but the funny part is why they asked for Ethereum. that is so stupid.

bitcoin is understandable because it is the biggest cryptocurrency and with right actions you can be anonymous.
but if they wanted to choose an altcoin there are a lot of them that are actually offering "Anonymity" and Ethereum is surely not one of them.
even the premined Dash scam would have been a better choice :D

Actually ethereum is a good choice considering it will have raiden implemented (late march-early april) before it will be actually usable on alphabay ( 1 may as i recall ). And bitcoin obviously because of the brand recognition in crypto world. And both of them have high liquidity.

Fake news, Ethereum preminers are desperate in promoting this shit to people. No real adoption at all.

why would they not demand an anon coin though?

I read the story here.. https://www.neowin.net/news/hackers-threaten-to-remotely-wipe-iphones-unless-apple-pays-a-ransom
Some of the comments are amusing  :D

I thought at first they hacked Apples computers.
But this sounds like "The Fappening"
I still have a LOT of picture sets from that LOL
Kaley Cucoa from The Big Bang Theory is a slut with a lot of SHOES ! hahahahha
And the Hunger Games girl has cum shots on her face in some of the pictures.

So yeah.. Turkish hackers give us all some more smut ;D

Most important reason now is liquidity i think. Also, most likely alphabay stays in touch with the developments in the crypto world, and if ethereum+raiden will work as intended bitcoin usage as money, wether we talk about dark markets or not, will pale in comparison. So that's why they will implement and accept ether and that's why these people demand the ransom in eth/btc, they must be aware of alphabay's actions or be somehow linked with them aswell.
I do not believe that after the announcement and implementation of ether on alphabay this hacker news comes out of nowhere and it's just a coincidence.

This is a joke, $75k from Apple, this is nothing to the company. the hacker must be an hungry hacker. I doubt it is a serious breach if not he should be demanding millions of USD from Apple

Well, depends. I know that amount sounds stupid, but it's so small for apple they basically have nothing to lose if they go through with it, assuming the breach is real. Public wouldn't have to know. Even as a stalling tactic would be good, to win more time and secure the breach.
Apple or any big company wouldn't pay millions, because it would hit their image. They would have to justify somehow that amount in the papers. 75k could be easily justified without much hassle.

April 7th is such a long time from now.
It seems like the vulnerability would be patched by then.
$75k would be nothing for a company like Apple to pay. It seems like if it was a serious compromise, the group would demand a larger amount or set a shorter deadline.
Kind of sounds like a bluff IMO.

It might be much, much more funny.  Indeed, the small amount makes that you're not serious.  So Apple will not pay.  And then they wipe 300 million devices, and Apple looks like the biggest fool on earth !

They shorted Apple shares and are now the richest people on earth ;)

By making public the threat, they have plausible deniability for their shorting: they were just speculators taking into account the threat, not the mean guys themselves, the shorting was based upon a rational argument based on public information.

Zun Tsu: if you are strong, appear weak ; if you are weak, appear strong ;)

A bit off-topic but anyway.I hate these kind of publications from news sites. just imagine that Average Joe reads this article and the only things that catches his eye and remains in his mind is Apple, hack, and BTC, and this is why a lot of people are thinking about the BTC as the money of the terrorists, etc., and this is pretty sad.

Agreed it's always some bad news..

And Dino you mean they crash the price of Apple stocks to buy cheap coins nom nom nom ?
THEN !
..assume the price will go back up ? (to sell ?)
How long would you have to wait ?
I wonder if there would be quicker / better ways to profit.

No, they have nothing to do with crypto.  They just had to:
1) announce publicly that there would be a serious hacking on Apple
2) make that announcement look silly as can be so that Apple doesn't act upon it
3) attract sufficient buzz so that this news is clearly publicly known

Next, if they really know how to do what they say, they DO it.  Apple looks like the biggest of fools.  Apple share falls like a stone on april 7.  The guys have shorted Apple shares on the stock market the 5th.  They cash out on the 8th of April.
The SEC wonders how they could know, they say they are simply speculators acting upon the public announcement of the menace (hence the need for (1) and (3)), and the fact that Apple didn't take them seriously and didn't pay the ridiculously low ransom (hence (2)).

Otherwise, if hackers shorted massively shares, they give away that they are the hackers.  But now, the information is open to everybody so they can pretend just to be astute speculators in the stock market.  Nothing crypto.

They simply needed to look totally ridiculous to Apple and to most market watchers.

fake for me there is no way an hacker can hack apple like that by violating so many phone and asking a return equal to a salary of many people in the world

Ya a small amount seems fishy..
Plus if they hacked them ? WHY dd they not install Ransomware ?

they are hacking through connections, via wifi, not all hacking are done with malware

when hackers demand a cryptocurrency as ransom they do it because they want anonymity that a cryptocurrency provides.

they choose bitcoin because it is THE cryptocurrency to go to, and they can actually sell it anywhere they want. even off the market and face to face by giving up the private keys, not even on chain.

and none of the above is possible with altcoins, specially the offline selling because nobody in his right mind accepts a super highly volatile altcoin that nobody buys.

the only reason that anyone might even consider an altcoin as this criminal purpose is if they offer anonymity and Monero does not and surely Ethereum doesn't.

to me, this looks like an advertisement for Ethereum by Ethereum foundation just to become the headlines of some news sites.
cheap trick guys, cheap trick!
