So, this is Hotmine X5 upgrade kit for Antminer S5,
which consists of two hash boards and one controller board.

Manufacturer is Hotmine, and their headquarters is located in Kiev, Ukraine.

Hotmine:
http://hotmine.io/ (http://hotmine.io/)

Products page:
http://hotmine.io/#products (http://hotmine.io/#products)

It uses a 16nm node process ASIC chip manufactured by Bitfury.
The chip model is more specifically Bitfury BF16BTC8162.
Also known as Bitfury BF8162C16 (maybe different revision or marketing name ?).

Bitfury:
http://bitfury.com/ (http://bitfury.com/)

You can also use Antminer S1 or S3 parts (frame, heat sinks, fan) with this,
but you need to buy Beaglebone Black / Antminer BB board separately.

Beaglebone Black / Antminer BB board is needed for the controller board.

And you also need some additional screws and mechanical support parts for the controller board.
I will come up with some kind of solution for this.

I have Antminer S1 in my shelf, so I bought the BB board separately from forum user Mammon.

Technical specifications:
Code:
Hotmine X5 upgrade kit for Antminer S5

Hash rate: 3.3-4.2 Th/s
Power consumption: 490 W
Power efficiency: 0.1-0.13 J / Gh/s
DC voltage input: 12V
ASIC chip type: Bitfury BF16BTC8162
ASIC chip quantity per unit (kit): 48 chips
Number of hash boards: 2 hash boards

Delivery for this upgrade kit from Ukraine to here Finland was pretty quick via Ukrposhta.

I paid 0.45 BTC including shipping
(this was in April 6, 2017).

Here are some pictures of the X5 upgrade kit parts and my Antminer S1 parts.

April 07, 2017 update
I did some assembling today though I'm still waiting for the BB board (for the controller) to arrive.
I used some thermal paste I had left and installed heat sinks and frame parts.

Both hash boards, two cooling fans (in a push-pull configuration) and frame parts installed.

When installing a heat sink to the hash board, screws must be very carefully and evenly cross tightened.

You don't want it to go "taco".

April 10, 2017 update part 1
If you have a empty micro SD card you want to do following things
after which you have a working Hotmine firmware:

1.
Download ’Tools and Instructions to Image SD card’ and follow the instructions.

Download link mirror #1 (Bitmain.com):
https://shop.bitmain.com/support.htm?pid=007201604120945219855QObfk20066C (https://shop.bitmain.com/support.htm?pid=007201604120945219855QObfk20066C)

Download link mirror #2 (Mega.nz cloud):

2. Unzip the X5 firmware tar.gz archive and copy files to the BtmBoot section of the SD card.
X5 firmware (March 23, 2017): https://mega.nz/#!xtVmwJgS!RBtNcPpBahclSH0joGfiXGcXbIBSvbUwvrqrc41nR-w (https://mega.nz/#!xtVmwJgS!RBtNcPpBahclSH0joGfiXGcXbIBSvbUwvrqrc41nR-w)

3. Delete the old .dtb file and your BtmBoot section with files in there should then look like in this screenshot:
https://i.imgur.com/IzkbiyW.png (https://i.imgur.com/IzkbiyW.png)
Screenshot.
(click to open a bigger picture)

4. Edit the uEnv.txt file with code shown highlighted in the previous screenshot image.
Code:
fdtfile=/dtbs/am335x-boneblack.dtb

5.
Put the micro SD card to the BB board and you are good to go.

April 10, 2017 update part 2
Today I received the BB board in today's mail, and it was time to move on with this build.  :)

(click to open a bigger picture)

I made a support bracket for the controller by using parts that I was able to find in my everything-box  ;D.
It consists of two PC case PCI-slot covers, some screws and other stuff.
Pictures will tell more about the details.

And here is the test setup.

After some testing I decided to change fans and these type fans are nice and quiet ones that I use now.

Here are some performance results after one and half hour of mining with the quiet fans -setup.

(click to open a bigger picture)

There is some difference in the temperature when comparing the two hash boards.

It is most likely because I used to different kind of thermal pastes in different boards and there is some performance difference.

So far I'm pretty happy with this miner and I've been wanting to do this kind of an upgrade for the good old S1 for a long time!  :)

If you got any questions, feel free to drop them in this thread.
I will try to give my best answer.

Sweet!  :D
Will be nice to see how it goes.
Almost makes me regret giving most of my s1's to sidehack for parts...

Looking at the pics looks like there is no buck regulator and the string(s) are directly fed by the PSU. Effective but of course now the only way to control the chips Vcore is by adjusting the PSU itself (not that most intended users would/could). Only real downside is that if thin PCIe cables are used the chips just have to live with the reduced voltage out of them.

I'm wondering why don't they sell it to broad masses of S1/S3/S5 owners? I am trying not to buy several X6 upgrade kits - still no result (may be they will say something before the end of this week, if not - I buy Avalon741). And I have not yet heard that someone bought these upgrade kits...

Yeah, I've only seen two of these kits: yours (X6 kit) and mine  :)

They do have a lot of potential customers. I bet there is a lot of people who still have old Antminers.

Wonder if they'd do a group buy or a bulk buy to a reseller.

Also I have a half-dozen or so S5 controllers if anyone does get their hands on one of these and wants a brain for it.

At least you could send them an email. I couldn't get their web form to work. Pressed the button and nothing happened. No error message. No confirmation. Nuthin.

Seems like this has a lot of potential, but only if we can communicate with them, and if they are really making and selling the upgrade kits.

Anyway, here's hoping they're really doing this. The more alternatives we have to Bitmain the better, especially with all the recent hullabaloo.

Hey everyone.  Wanted to let you know that I received a response from hotmine!

They basically asked me:

1) How many & which kit do I want
2) My address

HagssFIN I assume since you obviously have a kit, you can vouch that this is a stand-up company?

Yes I can confirm that I had a smooth deal with Hotmine and mr. E. Turanov for this X5 kit.

This is a good kit for those with needed DIY skills for the upgrade.
As soon as I get the BB board and get this running I can have my final words on this.

Nice review. I have some S5s with dead Hash boards if you want them for kit work. Can send a big box.
Thanks, but I'm not planning to do a business on this.  :)

DIY skills? Seems like it requires practically none as long as you have a human brain. Nice review, almost the same as setting up my initially finicky SP20s. Keep us updated on how cool the miner is during operation and how it actually performs!

Yeah it is not rocket science. If you can handle tools and you know some miner firmware/software stuff you will be fine with this upgrade kit.
It should be really easy with the S5. With S1 and S3 you need some additional modifying.

By the way, check out the first three posts in this thread and updates by me!
I got the BB board in the mail, and the build is now ready. :)
I have some results running it with Enermax Revolution 87+ 1000W PSU.

Biggest DIY skill to know is that when mounting the board to heat sink, cross-torque the screws moving from the center of the board out towards the outside screws to prevent what you called 'Taco board' (warping it) along with using a minimal amount of thermal compound. Use just enough to give a very thin layer.

Given how sharp the fins on the heat sink are, wearing gloves might be a good idea as well. Found that out long ago while doing a couple s1 > s3 upgrades...

Great review HagssFIN! Thanks for going through the trouble.

There's something delicious about an Antminer running Bitfury chips ;)

I'm interested in the X6 upgrade but haven't been able to get their contact form to work.

Does anyone have an email for them? Hopefully they're really accepting orders.

Yup, I agree with you. That sheet metal will get you good if you do not protect yourself or use other precautions. I have some good scars from about 15 years ago fighting with a PC. I learned my lesson, but it took me two goes before I did. HaHa! :)

You better cover the sidewalls with some rectangular pieces of plastic (like on original S5s). I guess the surface of PCB on the other side of the radiator should be cooled by the fans too.

Yeah thanks, this is a good suggestion and I must see how I would build it.
Perhaps some sheet metal cover.
This way I won't get any surprise with some part on the non-heatsink side of the  board getting too hot and suddenly failing.

Got a reply email for a X5. They said is ready to ship, ask me if I can pay in BTC.
No price or others details.

I asked if escrow service is acceptable.
I suggested OgNasty.

I'm not comfortable sending money out of the blue with no email reply or little.
They need to earn my trust first.

Careful guys! Why would a company be so busy preparing working boards to not even take the time for pr.  Who do they plan to sell to?  If not here, good luck I say.
Seems to me it would be easy to create a couple prototypes and send them to a few for review, then open up orders and not deliver.
Been done many times here before.
I hope that's not the case and cool for the ones that received them but come on we want something to be true so bad and they may be feeding off of you for that.

AM. can't bee very easy to do I have waited Gekkoscience upgrade boards for S1,S3,S5 many many months and they are not yet available. Have even send support hamburger money for many meals and still waiting.
I don't think that Bitfury sends samples if You just ask, pure SCAM easy prototype + scam hard.

Some kind civil war or Russian occupation going on in Ukraina so don't know how they can built miners there but at least anyone haven't asked any BTC for miners yet. Only 900 miles to Kiev so easy to make roadtrip and claim scam money back if target is known, I have seen many war zones in my life.

The warzone in Ukraine is far more in east than where Kiev is located.

I think Hotmine is located in Kiev, since that is where my shipment was sent from.

Hi guys.

We based in Kiev and it is very far from war zone.

We will be really happy if somebody from Europe or even from USA will come to our place and will see our R&D facility with miners and other equipment. By the way, Kiev is very beautiful city :)

Next week we will get few dozens free (not prebooked) X6 upgrade kits and will contact with all who wrote us in PM or here.

Additionally I will be in NYC from 16th till 25th of May attending Consensus 2017. If you don`t want to buy with advance payment, I can take 10 upgrade kits with me, meet in person and sell you in NYC. You can choose somebody from the city to be escrow/intermediary and send BTC to him if you from other parts of US.

Please let me know if this acceptable for you and you want buy X6 upgrade kit in NYC. The price - $1000 for one pcs (1,15 kW, 7,5 Th/s).

Hi guys.
The price - $1000 for one pcs (1,15 kW, 7,5 Th/s).

These numbers are fair, it's good. I was not able to get higher than 8 Th with my (S)X6 at 13.4 V.

I wonder if there's anything that would fit a Gridseed G-Blade.  Boards are 276mm x 90mm x20mm.  The price and the wattage both seem kind of high, I was looking for something more like 50 watts per board (less chips).  The G-Blade's getting old too, and there were a lot made I think.  It earns about $0.20/day now.  Jumping from Scrypt to SHA256 would be OK I guess.

Some pictures of a single original board at https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Gridseed-5-2-6MH-G-blade-USB-miner-Scrypt-Miner-dogecoin-litecoin-mining-machine-Gridseed-Blade/1490096_32446230074.html

Nope. Only upgrade kits I have seen are Hotmine upgrade kits (X5 and X6) and then there is sidehack's retrofit project with Bitfury 16nm chips (in development). These two both are compatible with Antminer S1/S3/S5.

Before I have upgrade boards I'll have a ~70W pod miner with BF16 chips.

Right, I haven't seen pictures of the insides of the Antminers but they seem about the same.  Two boards mounted to heatsinks with a fan at the end blowing through them.  The Gridseed boards are more self-contained: there's no controller board, each board has power and USB connections and can function independently.  Gridseed put the heat sinks on the outside, Bitmain on the inside.

There's somebody selling S5 boards for $56 delivered at https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/antminer-S5-557Gh-s-miner-Fitting-30-chip-pcs-PCB-28-NM-Calculation-circuit-board-bitcoin/628736_32686804147.html?spm=2114.12010612.0.0.u2K6fU but I guess you also need a controller board.  Otherwise it's not much more than a Gekko 2pac for 15(?) BM1384s.

Apparently Gridseed only made the 5-chip and 80-chip then retired or something.  Strange industry.

That's what I'm waiting for, if I can afford one.  And I'll keep my Gridseed earning $4/month.

2 built 3 to go, I'm going to have them at CFlocations if anyone knows him.

FYI I like Philipma for escrow only because he is active on the threads I read (+he is an internet community service superstar)

I'm being told months until I can get more boards... so no one flip out.

also I think the original S3 is best for the upgrade. you will need a beagle off eBay, but The heat sink is alot nicer.

That will go for sidehacks boards as well

We/I will of course buy ALL the boards/products sidehack comes out with in as large a quantity as can be afforded because he is stateside.

I believe I have an interesting and new group of people to sell miners too that are not being reached by any of the resellers on this forum.

I'm always going to distribute things I use myself.

Thanks all for your positivity and support

Why not say the S3s are better? S3 is probably the most well-thought-out miner yet built by any company. Simple, reliable, solid, quiet. Everything everything these days is not.

Also, I've still got a whole stack of S5 beaglebones right now and will probably have a whole stack more for anyone who gets one of these kits.

I meant why are they better as a donna for the parts. Is it price to buy or are the heatsinks better? I always thought the S1 - S5 hard parts were all the same.

Post by: Eagleone on June 04, 2017, 05:42:05 AM
The S3 has a completely different grade of aluminum machining. Maybe meaningless in the long run but the fins are going to be a tad bid quieter.

I should mention these puppies take 4amp fans on both sides if you want to run them wide open. Ive moved it into my house for the evening and turned it down aggressively so it's hashing around 5.5 with antminer fans turned to 30%

Sorry for being a n00b but how do I put nice high res pictures on here ?

Crap. The miner is still going on strong but the original fan of the power supply failed  :P
Fan-wise I don't recommend Enermax Revolution 87+ 1000W PSU for anyone.
This is already third case in which I have to replace the original fan with a new one (I have a total amount of three of these power supplies).

I'm surprised none of you have considered their heater-miners:
http://en.hotmine.io/heater-miner
could be a good substitution/addition to central heating,it can be used to heat pool water, etc. etc.
the price doesn't seem too high, the only problem-they are a Ukraine based company
problems with delivery and servicing as they do not provide any sort of warranty

The problem is they don't respond very much to any questions or even order requests, and nobody has really been able to get their hands on a heater unit even though many have inquired. Looks cool and possibly practical, though, hopefully these guys get their production and customer service up to speed soon.

Hiring few guys more and updating the website to process orders more automatically would help them a lot.

If they want to get more orders together, I'm game.  I emailed them from their site and waiting for a response.  I realize this could be used to upgrade my C1s, and I have a pile of them.  So I could put in a big order for these if they work in an Antminer C1.  They should.  I think they are all the same boards and the C1s just had the water cooling blocks instead of the fins.

PM me if you're interested, I'd be good with coordinating (or buying in if someone wants a bunch and just needs a few people to jump in, either way).

I made a thread in the marketplace section to discuss/plan if we get enough folks. Seems the consensus is that a 10 piece minimum will likely be required. Discussion here:

Back in early January I spoke to them to order four U6 kits for my farm. Basically 4x6 bundled together with power supplies. Hotmine emailed me back asking for my shipping address and told me my order was confirmed, and that they would reach back out early February to collect payment and ship. They never did, so I emailed Hotmine again and they delayed it to mid February. It is now the 17th and nothing from hotmine. I dont think I will carry out my order at this point.

Strange. I just got an email in Russian from them about their x6 and u6 both being available starting Feb 20th. price quoted was in both Ukrainian Hryvna and US.

<quoted below using google translate>
Hotmine X6 - 7 Th / s + - 5%
The cost in UAH is 39 200 (5 600 for the equipment and 33 600 for the software)
The cost in USD is 1,450 (200 for equipment and 1,250 for software)

Hotmine U6 - 28 Th / s + -5%
The cost in UAH is 164 600 (28 000 for equipment and 136 600 for software)
The cost in USD is 6 100 (1000 for equipment and 5 100 for software)
       * The price includes a power supply for U6

I got that email too, but that’s for new orders. My order was placed in January at 5k per U6.
