Title: MSI Z170A GAMING M5 - 7 GPU [SOLVED]
Post by: Talat10gu on April 17, 2017, 08:33:50 AM
Update: Problem solved !  ;D

Here is what you should;
Go to BIOS and update the bios to 1.D version
then go to Settings>Advanced>PCI subsystem Setting
Above 4G Decoding set to Enabled
(thanks to Tummler for settings)

And very important thing:
U should use Skylake CPUs
If you use Kabylake u can mine only with 4 GPUs
I was in trouble because of that.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I've MSI Z170A Gaming M5 Mobo - https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z170A-GAMING-M5.html
It has 7 Pci-e slots but when i try to connect more than 4 gpus, i can't boot it.

First, I tried the latest BIOS driver - 1.D

Nothing changed

Then I tried these settings:
- Bios Version 1.C;

- Into BIOS
Settings>Advanced>PCI subsystem Setting
PEG 0 and PEG 1 set to Gen2
Above 4G Decoding set to Enabled

- Settings>Windows OS Configuration
Windows 8.1 / 10 = "Disabled"
Windows 7 = "Disabled"
MSI Fast Boot = "Disabled"
Fast Boot = "Disabled"

Nothing changed

Then I tried PEG0 and PEG1 set to Gen1

Nothing changed

Then tried several combinations of these settings but Nothing changed.
I can't boot more than 4 GPUs but i know its possible.
Can anyone help please? Maybe I need Custom BIOS like "Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon"?

Thank you

Did you try the settings you mentionned with BIOS 1.D as well?

As for Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon, there is no need for any sort of custom BIOS.
I downloaded the latest BIOS version and followed that guide https://forum.z.cash/t/msi-z170-7-gpu-bios-setting-step-by-step/14473

The problem is that you're running 470's...

You can't get more than 4 470's working in a single mobo without a little magic...you've got to use nvidia cards or 480's for the other gpu's.

Generally best to do 3-4 470's per build.

Those mobo's have the magic built in...I have the same problem with my Gigabyte mobo that should support 6...but only does 5.

you can do it with the 470's there is no difference in the driver and it is the same process if it is 470, 480 or nvidia.

There absolutely no difference with 470 cards.
Running rigs with 6 of them with no problems at all.

I'm using G4560 - Kaby Lake series CPU
Skylake series may not create a problem. ı'm gonna try and give you the results guys.

try to disable the following and tell us the results pleas :
1- disabe unused USB ports
2- disable the sound board as u mainly mining won,t be using sound
3- disable LPT or serial ports

the idea is to same resources for those 6 slots to be up running ..

Have an MSI Z170A Gaming here as well, while I have no problems with other 170 boards that one causes real problems above 4 GPU, seeing PCI bus issues with the risers... Some others I have tried work much better...

Solved the issue. here is what i did;
Go to BIOS and update the bios to 1.D version
then go to Settings>Advanced>PCI subsystem Setting
Above 4G Decoding set to Enabled

But very important:
I was using Kabylake CPU (Pentium G4560)
Because of that i failed. Then i tried Skylake series CPU i3 6500 and boom. i mined with 7 GPUs.

If you use Kabylake u can mine only with 4 GPUs
I was in trouble because of that.

Here are several dual core Skylake CPUs that should work. The prices may not be the same in your country, but just look for one of the cheapest dual core options and you will be fine.

I just placed an order for the Z170-M5  ;D.

I could not find MSI-Z170 carbon or Biostar TB250 anywhere around, was actually planning to pair G4560 to one of the two boards before reading this posts. Really appreciate your update for G4400.

1000w should be enough if you mess with voltage/efficiency...I'd suggest a secondary PSU or a 1300w one though

The 480's don't appear to have the same card limitation as the 470's do...but you might have to mess with voltage to get it perfect.

I'm making a mixed build on this mobo as well as using the g4400, I'll report back once it's functional.

Many thanks for your feedback. Actually for the same price I can get 2*650W with better efficiency so it would definitely make sense to go for 3 + mobo one one and the 4 left and the second one.

Your primary PSU doesn't need to be very large as it only needs to power your motherboard and risers.

The secondary PSU would be running most of the power...a server PSU with breakouts would do fine.

Can anyone confirm that the Kaby Lake's will not run more than 4 cards on them?

I have been having fits getting 2 rigs to run more than 4 cards on them.  Here are the two builds.

Asrock H170A-x1  with Intel Pentium Skylake G4400 3.3GHz and 4 GB ram Win 10.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/381500457002?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117625

Asus Prime H270-Plus/CSM with Intel Celeron Kaby Lake G3930 2.9 GHz with 4 Gb Ram and Win 10
http://www.microcenter.com/product/473022/PRIME_H270-PLUS-CSM_LGA_1151_ATX_Intel_Motherboard?ob=1
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G41G0265

I had planned to run 5x RX 470 on the Asrock with 5 slots and build an Nvidia rig on the Asus platform.
right now I have 4x RX 470 on the Asrock and 3x GTX 1060 and 1x RX 470 on the Asus.

Thanks for the input

The problem is that you're running 470's...

You can't get more than 4 470's working in a single mobo...you've got to use nvidia cards or 480's for the other gpu's.

Generally best to do 3-4 470's per build.

i have 5 RIG of Asrock H81 Pro BTC 2.0 and all GPUs on these Mobos are Sapphire Nitro rx 470 4 GB (6 x GPU per RIG)

What in the actual 'F' does that have to do with an MSI mobo like the OP stated?

Your primary PSU doesn't need to be very large as it only needs to power your motherboard and risers.

The secondary PSU would be running most of the power...a server PSU with breakouts would do fine.

any info where to get the server PSU with breakouts?

many thanks

You can find them on ebay or various places around the internet. I have bought from these guys several times now and they are reliable sellers.

in order to have the rig working with 4G enabled you need to have you HDD in GPT not MBR,
its easy ish to convert with a appropriate tool.

Pick out motherdboard battery for 20seconds or so, restart windows without any gpu, shutdown.
Setup bios as described before. Restart.
Then install all gpus again, and finally turn on rig.

Okay guys,
I forgot to enable Windows 10 in the motherboard advance settings area. So I enabled that, and right now I'm just troubleshooting one of my PCI Express ports. Looks like my 5th port magically disappeared. I no longer see it in the chipset area.
Will update again soon.

I also have two such boards. Since my risers are on the way from China, now I only directly put 3 cards on board. I will say this board is actually not that great in supplying power directly to all three full PCIEs. I only get 2 X 1080 Ti + 1 X 1070 working on board, but not 3 X 1080 Ti which caused a problem of starting or failed to recognize one card. Also it usually requires a few reboots to finally get 2 X 1080 Ti + 1 X EVGA 1070FTW (225W TDP) all recognized, while the other combo with EVGA 1070 SC (150W TDP) is always running fine.

Anyone can comments whether Bios 1A is working with 7 GPUs or you have to get 1D?

well well well...

After recognizing 7 gpu and mining for a while, the rig freezed,
now its impossible to boot with 7 cards. (i guess there is some error screen, but i dont have any display plugged in)
*edit: windows goes into diagnostic & repair mode when a 6th or 7th card is plugged in.
With 5 card i dont have any issues and its mining OK.

i got the last driver from amd.com for my rx480 4g nitro.
bios setting is unchanged
windows 10 pro up to date
1300w psu

any ideas ?
which driver you guys are using with the z170/rx480 combo ?

these problem doesn,t relate to the 7 Gpu  on mother board .  there is either of 2 things u need to check :

1 if u don,t use a modded bios on yr rig then the 1300 PSU is small for the 7 GPU cause 480sonsume 225 watt " from sapphire website"
so in that case u better use 1600watt PSU  or try to undervolt from wattool a bit ...

2  if u use a modded bios  and was aggressive in the under voltage these things can happen ....

but I think its the 1st option ,,,  and to make sure u can try any watt meter to check how much watt u consume at the wall .

ok for  15.12 for me it wasn't working.(radeon saphire nitro 480/4g)
i run the driver 16.40 that comes with the GPU -a good old CD-and disabled auto-update (amd/windows)

I now run claymore eth only at 173.512Mh/s  and zcash at 2040
i think its really good considering it is all stock settings.

most people with modded Bios use 16 9 2
if u r on stock Bios so u better use 15 12 as its adviced in Claymore read me file

its good that u solved yr problem ,,, but if it happened again I think u shouls check wattage at wall with watt meter like kill a watt from amazon

Hi All,
We built the rig with 5 rx480 (no more risers currently) on that mobo and Win10 (driver 16.11.5), but have a problem: MSI Afterburner doesn't show GPU voltage/temperature/load and so on for RX cards.
What i suspect that i set to first initialize cpu's intel graphic card in the BIOS, because we connected monitor to it during install/setup. Maybe this confused afterburner in some way?
So, any ideas/suggestions?
Thanks.

ps: i start Afterburner in the RDP session.

I am having an issue with this board and it's driving me nuts.

I'm using a G3900 skylake. If I enable Windows 10 mode and leave my GPU's plugged in, the screen stays dark and won't boot.

I have to unplug all my gpu's and plug my monitor into the onboard hdmi to get any image.

If I disable Windows 10 mode I am able to see the screen turn on and get into bios, but it won't boot into the windows installer.

I'm currently installing Windows 10 in GPT mode with all the GPUs unplugged and using the onboard graphics to my monitor.

I have bios set exactly as everyone else here: PEG 1 and 2 to Gen 1 and 4G Enabled

Can someone write an exact step by step on how to set up this board with 7 gpu?

No matter what I do if I connect the 7 gpus I don't get any kind of image on my monitor through HDMI connected to any of the 7 cards.

just received my risers and setup 6 GPUs on this board with manufacturer bios 1.D no problem

My rig:

G4400
MSIZ170 M5
8G Ram
120G SSD
1300W PSU
4 X 1080 Ti FE + 2 X 1070 AIB (should get 1600W PSU to support 6 X 1080 Ti)
WIN10pro

I firstly installed 4 X 1080 Ti, and found PCIE 1 & 3 not working with 4 card setting, I only got them working in PCIE 2/4/5/6/7 (don't understand why), or the motherboard only recognized 3 cards.

Luck I added two extra 1070s without any problem, so now I am using PCIE 2~7

If I disable windows 10 whql support in bios, it works fine but I can't boot into a windows install or windows itself. If I plug the monitor directly into the onboard hdmi, then everything works fine.

I disabled fast boot and it seems to be working!! I get proper video output from one gpu shown on my monitor with 7 gpus hooked up. However now Device Manager only shows 5 GPUs instead of 7.

1. you may try a skylake CPU?
2. I had problem with 4 1080 Ti too, you must put three GPUs first on the three full-length PCIEs, then try adding the last GPU on different 1xPCIE. I have two slots not working for my four GPUs setting.

Hi All,

New info for thouse who installed 6-7 cards but see only 5 in Win10 and you already installed AMD driver.  After all thing according to first page done, you need to do the following:
0) Go to BIOS, then to "Board Explorer" and check that all your cards are visible there. Reboot to Windows.
1) Install Intel Chipset Driver, download from MSI support site. Reboot.
2) Install Intel Management Engine Driver, download from MSI support site. Reboot.
3) Go to Device Manager, remove all RX cards. After some time (several minutes) they are starting to come back. Wait until you see all of them (we have 6). Reboot.
Enjoy.

i'm not quite sure that item 2 is required, but with the above we have 6 cards visible in the system.

Got 2 rigs g4560, Asus h270 Prime, 8gb ram & x6 470 8gb

Above 4G enabled in bios, Pci set in Gen1 wherever possible.

Both rigs work with all Six gpu with smOS.

Windows 10 enterprise boots only when 5 GPU are connected, as soon as I connect a 6th they Crash on Boot with ATTEMPTED EXECUTE OF NOEXECUTE MEMORY

Whichever gpu I disconnect and leave 5 online, windows boots all 5 cards recognized....

For this to work, does it require Win 10 in UEFI ?

Does it do that with only 6 GPUs? You're getting close to the power limit of your PSU. Another probable culprit would be one or more of your risers.

For this to work, does it require Win 10 in UEFI ?

It requires Windows 10 to be installed in UEFI mode, yes. I don't know if it works with earlier versions of Windows or not.

Same problem with this board, can't get more than 3 GPU running.

If I add a 4th GPU, no matter what, the bootup just sits there with a flashing cursor.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO annoying.

Haven't figured it out yet.

Fuk me.

Here is what you should;
Go to BIOS and update the bios to 1.D version

How do we do that? Only thing I haven't tried.  Pulling my fukin hair out here.

Updated to 1.D bios, enabled 4G.

Can't boot with more than 4 cards, if I add a 5th GPU then the system just sits there at a black screen.

Win10

Any ideas?

Mine was finicky until I manually set the RAM speed to 2133.  Also if you use a single stick make sure it's in the 2nd slot from the CPU.

Hi, I would like to say that is not true about CPU.
I have Intel Celeron G3930 - it's Kaby Lake and I run on 7gpus (rx480-8g).

Hey can you confirm you got this working on this board (gaming m5) with Celeron G3930?

I have this CPU and I have just had a different board cancelled on me so was thinking about this as a replacement, but a lot of people seem to have trouble with it especially with Kabylake processors.

Thanks in advance!
Chris

I have spent literally 3 days trying to get this working and I am sick of this motherboard already.   I feel like I have tried everything.

Tried several bios versions, 4g encoding, PCI Auto, Gen1, Gen2, Gen 3, diff risers, swapped ram, swapped cards, changed order of USB risers,  tried everything listed in this thread and nothing works.

And I have 2 of them.   :-\

About to just write it off as a loss at this point.   All because I wanted to run 7 GPUs.   Bleh.

Does the display show artifacs when Above 4G Decoding set to Enabled is normal? I turn off the computer when I see them should I wait?

 ???

If not active 4G when connecting the fifth GPU appears a memory error, did it happen?

 ???

Can somebody film the startup of the miner?

Dont worry for the weird screen .... it is normal in this pice of S&%t motherboard when you enable the 4g decoding

try reinstall win10 using any amdgpu as video out from beginning.

Just tried it. Plugged in a single GPU and use that as video output, there's no image on my screen if I enable Windows 10 mode in bios.

Bios settings same as before. All Gen 1 with 4G Enabled
Actually, everyone says that GEN must be "2", but i have the same problem as you - Device Manager shows only 5 GPUs no matter what.

you should try this: https://youtu.be/fTusQ0omj8M

Tried it, every time i enable 4g Decoding it reboots to a black screen, nothing displayed.  Even with 0 GPU's installed connected to onboard video once i enable 4g Decoding it will not boot.  It just goes to the MSI flash screen and then a black screen.

You're my hero.

That bold part did it.  I enabled onboard video and connected monitor to onboard video, disabled 4g encoding, removed all GPU's

Ran DDU, re-installed drivers, rebooted into Bios, enabled 4g encoding and shutdown.   Re-installed GPU's and fired it up.

We see all 6 cards now.

Thank you!   I have to wait til I get some other cables to add the 7th.

I got mine to work with 6 rx570 sapphire pulse (hynix). When I was undervolting my cards I set one to 160mV accidentally. My computer froze and now I cant get all to work again. The maximum now is 5 cards, if I plug 6 it shows up bios screen but after that there is no video image. I already flashed bios again but had no lucky. I might reinstall windows later to try to fix it, but till now no lucky. Any suggestions?
Ps.: All cards working if plugged separately.

EDIT: GOT IT TO WORK! Downloaded display driver uninstaller and removed all my drivers, after that i got screen image again!

I'm running same mobo as a lot of you guys. having trouble with my hashrate though. can't figure it out.

msi z170a gaming m5 motherboard
six 6gb msi gtx 1060 gaming x 6g GPUs (all on risers)
pentium g4400 3.3ghz
60gb 500mb/s solid state
8gb ram
1500w PSU

windows 10 pro
using claymore and ethermine.org

I was using msi afterburner, but uninstalled it to try and get these working properly before i worry about overclocking. It was bringing up my total hashrate from about 15.5 to 17.5mh/s.

My problem is: No matter what I do, what bios (either 1.D or the latest May release), whether I'm getting all 6 cards, or just 4, they are all hashing at about 2.8 to 2.9mh/s when overclocked.

I've run DDU and reinstalled bios and drivers multiple times. There are two mobo drivers I could not install:

1. The Intel Software Guard Extensions Platform Software gives me this message, "A required privilege is not held by the installer. Please run the installer from an Administrator Command Prompt. Install will cancel."
I could not figure out how to run this from the Administrator Command Prompt.

2. The Intel Serial IO gives me this message, "The setup program ended prematurely because of the following error: This platform is not supported."

I did not download and install the On-board Audio Drivers. Is this a mistake?

I have not downloaded and installed any of the utilities from MSI's site. Is that part of my mistake? Which ones do I need?

Has anyone out there had a similar problem? How did you get these cards up to around 20mh/s? Anyone have any ideas of what I have done incorrectly?

We are using two different systems with this motherboard and 7 GPUs on a skylake CPU... one AMD system and one NVIDIA system.  If you follow the correct steps it should work 7 GPUs for everyone... just takes a bit of extra stress. :p

Here are several dual core Skylake CPUs that should work. The prices may not be the same in your country, but just look for one of the cheapest dual core options and you will be fine.

I seem to be having a slightly different issue than most on here.

Msi z170a m7
4x 580 4gb
3x 560 4gb
win10 pro
32gb cache
4gb ddr4
4g enabled
pcie set at 1x
igpu off.

The system will run fine with 6 cards. Normal hash rates, etc. When I add the 7th GPU I get 1 or 2 GPUs that claymore won't mine on(0.000hash), and at least one that starts at normal hash and drops to about 1/2 rate before the driver crashes and the system hard locks. From starting mining to hard lock is about 10min.

The GPU is detected in windows, no errors, etc. Drivers are installed. afterburner will set clocks.

It doesn't seem to matter what cards it runs, just that it's only 6 and not 7. It's not a bad riser.
Event viewer just reports that the driver has crashed.

It may be related to the last pcie 16x slot, but I need to test more.

U should use Skylake CPUs
If you use Kabylake u can mine only with 4 GPUs

I can confirm the above statement is incorrect. Just built a 7 gpu rig w/kabylake no problem.

Set the MB bios to 4G for cypto mining, make sure you can see your cards in board explorer, then be patient while windows configures them (up to 3-5 minutes even in fast systems). Primary GPU may also switch from the one you were using after you add the rest. Hence the black screen everyone describes. If you keep adding/removing or re-ordering your cards/pcie-1x's risers, expect the same thing.

Hi,

I have just set up my first rig... However I have a problem.

My Setup:
MSI Z170A SLI Plus motherboard
Intel Pentium Skylake 3.3Ghz G4400 CPU
6x EVGA GeForce Nvidia GTX 1070 FTW
EVGA 1600w Platinum PSU
Windows 10 Home 64 Bit
120G OCZ Vertex SSD
2x 4Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2666MHz Memory

Right, the problem is I have tried Centos 7, Ubuntu, Windows 7 Enterprise and also Windows 10.

I can see all 6 GPU in all OS, but in Linux it lists them fine and claims they are all active, but claymore will only run on 3.

Anyway, I have now settled on Windows 10 Home 64bit, I can put all 6 cards in but can only get 4 to work as the other two cards just have code 12 saying not enough resources.

I have literally tried everything, but can only get 4 cards running.

I have tried G4 enabled and set to Gen 1, 2 and 3 and auto, Ive disabled absolutely everything possible inc USB ports, lpt and parallel etc etc, seriously I am ha big a melt down here.

Ive tried increasing the latency all the way in stages to 248 and still no joy.

At the minute Ive got £800 of graphics and want to use them, I'd like them all in one rig but may have to set another up.

Any help would be very much appreciated thank you.

There are exact guides on what you need to do to get 7gpus to work on MSI motherboards. It took a few hrs of playing with it, but it's not rocket surgery.

I initially had issues with 7 cards vs 6 and it turned out to be a bad riser.

Your motherboard is not the same as the one that this thread was started for, so the steps that others have taken in this thread might not work for you. Unless it's a motherboard that was specifically designed for mining there's no guarantee that it will work with more then 3-4 GPUs.

Haven't tried using the M.2, but may at some point.  Not sure whether to try that first or the PCIe splitter.  First, I need to replace Kaby Lake processor with Skylake and verify that this will fix the problem with the 4GB cryptocurrency BIOS option not working (blank screen on boot).  Walk first, then run.

msi z170a gaming m5 has 7pcie and 1 m.2 slot, is there any body use the m.2 slot to create A 8 card rig?
when I get two more cards next week I am going to try. I have the m.2 adapter and it works fine

I posted this in another forum and I wanted to see if anyone has any tips on assisting with my first rig...

I'm having an issue with the same board and Geforce 1070 GTX GPU combination...I can't get any of the GPU's to show up without having them plugged directly into the board. They're not under Device Manager; rather, they're a generic System Device.

I updated the BIOS to the latest version 1.7, performed a clean installation of Windows 10 in UEFI, as well as followed the instructions above regarding 4G encoding and setting PEG0 and PEG1 to Gen1. I've also made sure that I am using HDMI and NOT the onboard Intel GPU.

After the clean install, I wanted to see if I could directly plug them in and Windows recognized two. I couldn't get past two, even with the USB-powered risers. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! I have been scouring the net for days without any progress...

MSI Z170A
Intel i3-6100T processor @ 3.2GHz
8GB Crucial DDR4
6x PCI-E1X TO 16X USB Risers
6x EVGA Nvidia GeForce 1070 GTX FTW GPU
1500W Enermax MaxREVO PSU

I used DDU to remove the onboard Intel graphics, however, that didn't work either.

Why disable internal GPU - shouldn't be an issue to use it.

Did you try to change PCI Latency Timer to 64?

Hi everyone, newbie here :) I have a strange symptom with my new build. Starting with only one card, on the MSI Z170 gaming M5 mother board with a skylake i5-6400, I can not get the AMD RX 480 video card to work (no display, not detected, not showing in system manager, as if it does not exist at all) on the primary PCI-E 16X slot, it some how works if I place it in the secondary PCI-E 16X slot (only runs at 8X) or the third one (only runs at 4X).
On the other hand, with another nvidia GTX 1060 3GB video card, it works fine on the primary PCI-E 16X slot.
I have already updated to the latest 1E BIOS and driver for windows 10 64bit. Played around with all the tweaks mentioned in this thread, including changing PCIE Gen 1/2/3/auto, enable/disable 4G, enable/disable fast boot,  enable/disable windows 10/8.1 WHQL, enable/disable IGD/PED. Has anyone seen any similar symptom like this too? Any advice will be appreciated.

Chris

I cant confirm it will be working on gaming m5 mobo, i have MSI Z170A GAMING PRO CARBON and second mobo is ASUS PRIME Z270-P where this CPU working fine.

I have gaming M5 mb and G3930 won't boot with the crypto currency option enabled. Just get a blank screen. I've tried the latest two BIOS versions (1E and 1D). It sounds like I'll need to get a Skylake for this mb and use that G3930 in a different mb.

Well, I got a Skylake Celeron (G3900) CPU running on this Gaming M5 board and no change.  Still boots to a blank screen whenever I enable 4G/crypto option. No cards installed.  What did people do to get this to work?

Try following steps in BIOS:

1. Set PEG0/1 to AUTO
2. Enable above 4G enconding
3. PCI Latency timer 64
4. Initiate Graphic Adapter set to IGD with 64 memory (and connect the monitor to internal HDMI port if not done anyway already!)
5. Win 8.1/10 set to DISABLED
6. Win 7 set to DISABLED
7. Set UEFI only

It's important that you install Win10 in UEFI mode - if you have any issue that you cannot install Win10 on empty hard disk after you configured UEFI only proceed with following steps during Win10 setup.

At the partition screen of Win10 Setup press Shift + F10 to get a command prompt
Type this (hit enter after each)

diskpart
list disk
(will show you a list of attached disks, the one you want to install to should be 0)
select disk 0
clean
convert gpt
exit

then refresh the partition list and install Win10 on the empty disk.

If you have your monitor connected to the internal GPU instead of one of the mining GPUs you have the advantage that even the 1st GPU can mine at full speed as it doesn't have to waste some performance for Win10 graphics rendering ;)

Thanks.  I actually got it working just with steps 1 and 4.  I already had all the others set except for 3 which I didn't do and doesn't seem to be necessary.  I'm using Linux in UEFI mode.  6 cards worked fine.

I didn't have a 7th riser available (getting more tomorrow), so I plugged a 7th card directly into the last PCIe slot and it recognized it, but ran into an issue with X-server.  However, I was able to use a tty terminal and that worked fine and miner recognized all 7 cards.  Using a riser for the 7th card might fix that issue.  If not, I might just need to try plugging monitor into one of the cards.  I tried plugging it into the 7th card, but that didn't work.

I have some M.2 to PCIe converters coming this week, so I'll try adding an 8th and 9th card and see if that works.  In theory, 9 cards should work in Linux, but I'll find out soon if this motherboard has any problems with that many.

msi z170A gaming m5 has 7 pcie and 2 m.2 slots.
unfortunately, only 1st m.2 slot works with m.2 to pcie adapter, so the mobo supports max 8 GPUs.

asus prime z270-A supports 9 cards, I saw a video in youtube.

So I have this board and had been having problems with anymore than 4 GPU's. But I now have it running with 6 NV GPU's with the IGD as the display output.

I'm running with Kabylake i3-7300 so having that is not a problem and you don't need to be looking at Skylake parts. I do have a Skylake G3900 which actually had more issues.

The main thing is to set all your settings in BIOS first and then install Windows 10, I had an old image of Windows 10 I was using that just would not boot when you enabled 'Above 4G Decoding'.

I didn't need to change much in BIOS using latest 7977v1E BIOS.

1. Above 4G Decoding 'Enabled'
2. Win 8.1/10 set to 'Enabled'
3. UEFI only

Hopefully this helps, and clears up issues for some or at least provides some hope. :)

Use the latest BIOS version which was released on 2017.05, just enable 4G decoding, other changes in BIOS are unnecessary, 8 cards run. Looking for a way to run 9 cards with 2 M.2 slots.

I got 8 cards working in Windows 7.  That was an adventure.  You have to manually update the registry to pull that one off.  Windows 10 doesn't have that issue.  I haven't tried 9 cards in Win7, but I've heard it's not possible.

On the Linux side (XUbuntu 16.04), I've been having some issues with the X server configuration.  I currently have 7 cards running well there and have been focusing on overclocking and undervolting the nvidia cards and I think I've got a good, stable script working now.  I only have two M.2 converters and installed them both in my Win7 rig (was the only working rig I had at the time, so why not?

Here are the next things on my list to test (order subject to change):
  • Add 9th card to Win7 rig and see if the rumors are true that 9 won't work.  My registry edits to get 8 cards working make me wonder if those same edits will also get 9 to work.
  • Add 8th and 9th card to Linux rig and see if the motherboard supports that.  I recall something about the 2nd M.2 on some motherboards not supporting PCIe and only support storage and/or memory.
  • Convert Win7 rig to Linux if it will give the ability to run 9 cards.

FYI...that Win7 rig is on an ASUS Prime Z270A mb (7 PCIe slots and 2 M.2 slots just like the MSI).  The Linux rig has the MSI Z170A Gaming M5 mb.  Obviously, I might have different results with the second M.2 slot on these rigs.  If one or both of these boards allow me utilize both M.2 slots, then I'll order more, but I have what I need to do the appropriate testing.

OK, I made a weak try to get 9 GPUs running in Win7 (using 2 M.2 to PCIe converters on ASUS Prime Z270A) and it didn't work, but the method I tried wouldn't have gotten 8 to work, so I'll probably need to revisit a little more to be sure.

I then moved one of the M.2 converters to the MSI Z170A Gaming M5 to get an 8th GPU there, but the BIOS wouldn't recognize anything on either of the M.2 slots.  I suppose the converter could be bad since it didn't work in either system.

Anything special you needed to do to get the M.2 to PCIe converter to work on the Gaming M5?  What BIOS version are you using and what are your BIOS settings for PCI and monitor?

Uifi is the most important option .
Updating the bios
Enable 4g encoding
All pcie turn to gen2

Every thing will work

I did installed & set up 2 of this board & working great with 6 cards each .  & did test the sevdnth card & worked too.

now 8 cards works very stable, 7 1050ti and 1 1060.
btw, CPU is g3900.

if you leave integrated video card enabled, enable "Windows 10" in bios only during installation (no other GPU's connected or bios will complain) and then back to "Windows 10" disabled you don't lose performance on the first GPU as it doesn't need to handle windows graphics ;)

have 2 rigs with each 6 x 1070s running and IGD active - works like a charm and all cards at the same performance ;)

Yes, it is on that board. I'm not sure if it was the UEFI only setting that helped, it seemed to me it was more the Above 4G Decoding option being enabled in the first place during the windows install. That option gave me the most grief just being turned on/off with an old install. With a fresh install of Windows 10 with all the BIOS settings I wanted set in the first place I haven't had an issue since. Even added a 7th card from one of my other machines.

Hey Guys!

Hoping to get some assistance. I've re-read this whole thread a few times now, and can safely state the following;

7 x GPU's does work with the most recent BIOS but it is very important that you do the following BEFORE installing Windows 10.

UEFI only
Above 4G Decoding 'Enabled'
Win 8.1/10 set to 'Enabled'

You will otherwise run into grief. Once I did that, I was able to get Windows 10 to detect all cards.....but it isn't fully solved yet.

Right now I'm running the following;

MSI Z170A M5 Gaming board
G4400, 3.3 GHz Processor
8GB of Crucial Ram
1 x 1000w EVGA Gold PSU
1 x 650w EVGA Gold PSU
4 x Asus RX580 Dual 8GB
1 x R9 390
1 x MSI RX480 4GB
1 x MSI RX580 4GB

All cards are detecting in Windows, and I can fire up Claymore with stock settings (few of the cards have modded bios, but those particular cards ran solid for 4 days with OC prior to the addition of the other cards).

I'm currently using the most current drivers from AMD Drivers.

Long story short - I seem to be getting poor results from GPU0. All other cards are doing good given the lax settings, but GPU0 is only giving me about 4 or 5MH/s.

Any help would be really appreciated. This mobo has been one heck of a constant ball-kick though.

you probably plugged your monitor in GPU0 at some point,
use the integrated insteed,
shutdown several time till it back to normal.

I have this same board currently running 6 GTX 1070

Win 10 creators update. without this creators update the cards hash at 2 mh/s
1.d bios
gen 1
4g enable
skylake cpu
4gb memory
Virtual memory setting 3000 -20000
I wouldn't say it's stable though
6 gpu's run about 12 hr before restarting
5 gpu's runs fine
7 gpu's claymore hashes for a few min then restarts...

Im going to upgrade to the newest bios tomorrow morning there is a 5/2017 release.

any other tips

PSU are 2 750 watts
1 running motherboard and 3 cards the other running the other 4
cards 5 asus Republic of gamers cards
1 white asus card
1 Founder edition but with this card claymore just restarts not sure if its the card or just the system becoming unstable for software reasons.

Maybe too much OC? Never worked with split PSU but that might cause also some issue.
how much power do you take per GPU (check with nvidia-smi)?

Hi,

I have 7 x Nvidia GTX 1070 with this motherboard and have it running with 6 fine (not overclocking yet).

I am using an M.2. SSD and have 5 cards and 6 USB risers on a 1000W PSU and 2 cards and the M.2. SSD on a 500W PSU.

Sometimes when I reboot one of the cards fails to load (in device manager):

Quote
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

If I disable / enable the device then it works again.

I have run Display Driver Uninstaller then re-installed the Nvidia drivers but this does not help.

I have swapped the USB cable riser around and used different 3d cards, the hardware is all fine.

Any advice?

I moved the PCIE I was plugged into, and it started firing properly.
Once all drivers are set my intention is to use the integrated as my primary, but have had the best luck getting Windows to install drivers when I'm plugged into one of them.

Thanks for the response!

To get 8 GPU working in Windows 7, you need to make some changes to the registry to address the code 43 warning.  Problem I had is when I went down to 7 GPUs and back up to 8, the registry hack no longer worked.  I didn't spend too much more time on it before switching to Linux which doesn't have that problem.  Check out the NVIDIA forum post below and try that and it may help.  Supposedly not necessary for Windows 10.

Anything special you needed to do to get the M.2 to PCIe converter to work on the Gaming M5?  What BIOS version are you using and what are your BIOS settings for PCI and monitor?
my bios is the latest version, i enabled 4g decoding, the gen1,gen2 setting is auto,  disable integreted video card, plug hdmi monitor  to the first Pcie 16x, m.2 closest to CPU works, the other m.2 doesn't work. I haven't try  Windows, I use nvOC, a customized linux, can be found in this forum.
now 8 cards works very stable, 7 1050ti and 1 1060.
btw, CPU is g3900.

Thanks.  How much system RAM do you have?

I have more m.2 to pcie converters arriving this week along with another 4GB RAM so I'll be able to do more testing very soon.

What issues (if any) did you encounter plugging HDMI monitor into other cards?

Did you disable other things like sound, serial i/o, etc?

Do you have any automated startup routines to undervolt and/or overclock (using nvidia-smi and nvidia-settings)?

my ram is 4GB, it's big enough. we don't need to plugin hdmi to other cards, the first card is fine. I don't disable other things, mysystem is nvOC and I believe it runs nvidia-settings on bootup to setup overclock and fan spead.

Running into an issue with Windows 10 not properly detecting my cards, or not installing the drivers. Seems fine with 4 or 5 cards, 6 or 7 and it goes to junk. Also giving a Code 43 in some cases.

It was working the other day, all cards detecting, and showing up in Device Manager, but had to fool around some to flash a card. (card is working) so I know it wasn't the flash that is causing my issues.

I have to say, this board is finicky with 5+ GPU's....

Any ideas?

I can say with certainty that I DID have all 7 firing, and mining under Win10 w Claymore 9.6 - Then I screwed it up when I tried to flash one of the cards. Seems, based on what I read, having a modded card in slot 2 causes issues with the board not getting past POST - (board debug code may be 92-96, 97,98,99) - This has been a problem for me. I'll test tonight, and report back.

Yeah I had 7 running in win10 but at some point the board always went nuts and they would stop working, code 12, code 43, all kinda problems I gave up and switched to SMOS.

I'm on Windows 10 but tried anyway, it didn't work though. I can occasionally get 7 cards to show without errors but even then I mostly get the error:

CUDA error - cannot allocate big buffer for DAG. Check readme.txt for possible solutions.

I've had it working perfectly with 7 cards a couple of times. Maybe it's time to try SMOS  ???

The "Cannot allocate big buffer for DAG error...." could also be because you haven't increased the Virtual Memory to 16GB

I've been at it about a week now with this board. I'm gonna make another effort tonight, so stay tuned. I'll report back here with my findings. All that said, its been a real ball ache, I could only imagine the BS involved with trying to use the M.2 connections.  :'(

Yep, 1070 4GB cards.

So, just as an update - I did get all cards working properly last night. 7 GPUS, all firing now. What a nasty adventure. Here is what I can confirm worked.

Set PEG 0 and PEG 1 to GEN 1, 4G Decode "Enabled", Windows OS Configuration: Windows 8.1/10 "Disabled", Windows 7 "Disabled", Fast Boot "Disabled".  Reboot/shutdown.  Install one card at a time, rebooting between each card (not sure why, but worked for me) starting with x16 slot #2, then #5, 7, 1, 6, 4, 3.  If cards are modded you may have issues where screen won't post (board debug code may be 92-96, 97,98,99): in that case try installing a non-modded card in slot 2, and the modded ones in the remaining slots.  Alternatively, try OS Config...Windows 8.1/10 "Enabled" + with or without Fast Boot.

I used hacked drivers, but what is above is what did it for me. Hope this helps!

I had mine mining for 8 hours on 6 cards, the PC then died and needed a hard reboot. It rebooted and came up with 7 cards working for roughly the same length of time.

I hard rebooted again and with 7 cards I get the CUDA error (never get the CUDA error with 6 cards).

I've also had it mining a few minutes and then get:

GpuMiner cu_k01 failed 6, the launch timed out and was terminated

It's all very random. I've tried -r 180 to try to prevent the 8 hour or so hard reboot issue but it didn't help.

I think I'm on GEN 2, I'll try GEN 1.

You must have 4G decode set, and have UIFI Mode set BEFORE you install Windows. Doing it after the fact will cause it to not boot.

I don't have an 8th card to try maxing out the PCIE slots. Took a lot of trial and error so I know the pain that it can be. If anyone needs pointers, glad to help.

Hi,

we are trying to set up a 7x 1070 rig, but we are stucked when detecting the gpus, we can't get over 4x 1070, we get a #12 code error, like it has not enough resources. This is our set up:
- MSI Z170A GAMING M5
- OS Windows 10
- CPU Intel G4400
- 4GB RAM
- 7x 1070
- Latest drivers

We also have the same problem with 7x 1080 rig.

Update have 2 rigs currently running 6 1070 running stable. Can't get a 7th card stable, I think it's due to my psu issues with rails. 6 is stable. I was crashing because I think I had a bad gpu. That one card  would run at about 72 degrees when the other 5 would be at 55. Swapped that out and 6 ran fine. Setting a 3rd rig up on a z2 today hope it goes smoothly.

Not enough resources sounds like above 4G isn't enabled or PCI isn't set to Gen1?

If Windows detects them but there aren't enough resources you're halfway there. Need more info to troubleshoot though.

Just an update. Last night I was able to install an 8th GPU on this board using an M.2 -- PCIE adapter. It has been running solid for 12hrs now. I was not able to get the second M.2 to recognize though.

Does anyone know if anything special needs to be done in order for it to become active?

When you say "running solid" do you mean mining?  My install went bad and I had to rebuild Windows 10 as it went into an endless repair loop.  I also had a poor quality v1 board board smoke one of my cards and an M.2 slot.  I finally got the 8th GPU running, been running 7 stable for few days, and it seemed to be solid in Windows 10 OS, but as soon as I start Claymore, mining single Eth, the whole system is unstable.  Claymore throws lots of erros. Did you you have to do anything special to keep it stable when mining?

After long and with this threads help I get my 6 cards working ...
But I got a weird overclock problem with MSI Z170A (bios updated) and Pentium G4400 3.3GHz Skylake

5x1070 :
Code:
Memory Clock : +500
Hash Rate : 148 Mh/s

6x1070
Code:
Memory Clock : +100
Hash Rate : 157 Mh/s

System :
Code:
Windows 10, 1703 , all drivers updated to latest with "Driver Booster"
Mobo: MSI Z170A XPower Gaming Titanium
PSU: Thermaltake  XT Gold 1275W
GPU: 6x 1070 Asus Dual 8OG
Ram: DDR4 8GB 2800MHz
CPU: Pentium G4400 3.3GHz Skylake
HDD: SAMSUNG  SATAIII SSD

If I go over 100 MHz with 6 cards system cpu goes high slowly and in about 30-40 minutes system crash.
Any idea why this happens ?

When I say running solid, I mean dual mining - ETH/SIA. It has been no issue. My only issue is that I can't get a 9th running. I run mixed drivers, which is the only thing which I'd consider unique - Further, its a mix of cards (1 x R9 390, 4 x Asus RX580, 1 MSI RX 580, 1 Saphire Pulse RX580, and 1 RX480)

Really, there is something w your setup because I can confirm with certainty that it is running.

Guys I have windows 7 and I am getting the driver error on 2 of 6 gpus.
I get the error 43, how to solve it? I've tried to change the register, but nothing yet.

I've solve that changing for windows 10 now it's working OK.
Risers vers 03 brought me problems, I had to change for another version.
Thanks

Can someone to into a bit more detail on what they've done to get 8 or 9 GPUs working on this board using the M.2 slots and adapters?  I've been able to get 7 GPUs working fine, but can't seem to get an 8th to be recognized when using the M.2 slot/adapter.  I know Win10 has the 8 GPU limit, and was hoping to squeeze in one more card.

Have the latest bios with 'Above 4G' enabled and slots set to Gen 1.  Latest Nvidia drivers and all the latest W10 patches.

Solved the issue. here is what i did;
Go to BIOS and update the bios to 1.D version
then go to Settings>Advanced>PCI subsystem Setting
Above 4G Decoding set to Enabled

But very important:
I was using Kabylake CPU (Pentium G4560)
Because of that i failed. Then i tried Skylake series CPU i3 6500 and boom. i mined with 7 GPUs.

If you use Kabylake u can mine only with 4 GPUs
I was in trouble because of that.
 ::)

That's utter nonsense. I hate to say it that way but the way you state it is like scripture. I have a farm running on something you say isn't possible.

Lol, I run kabbylake only, and msi z170a sli plus. I have 8 of those puppies running 5 gpu each. You may have problems with 6.

I tried my one skylake CPU and wanted to get 6 but it won't go for me. I've tried disabling everything, from audio and lan to disabling the com ports. I can't get past a windows error 12 or whatever--the system resource one.

Also, I have rigs running 470s 480s 290s and 1070s.

Msi z270a/z170a has no problem running 5 gpu regardless of the CPU or generation of card.

Yep, totally inaccurate. I had 8 GPU's running this board + Kabylake CPU. It was a pain in the ass, but doable.

Have a problem.
Msi z270a-pro
G4400
4g ram
Bios latest ver.
4g mining mode enable after boot black screen error :P
Os w10(uefi) and simplemining.

what should I do :)

Update: Problem solved !  ;D

Here is what you should;
Go to BIOS and update the bios to 1.D version
then go to Settings>Advanced>PCI subsystem Setting
Above 4G Decoding set to Enabled
(thanks to Tummler for settings)

And very important thing:
U should use Skylake CPUs
If you use Kabylake u can mine only with 4 GPUs
I was in trouble because of that.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I have same Z170A Gaming M5 Motherboard and Kabylake CPU G4560.
6 GPU works just fine on Windows10, but no more than 4 GPUs on Simplemining.
So, do you think that Kabylake CPU has limit only on Ubuntu (and not on Windows)?

hello,

i'm having high cpu utilization, mostly due to system interrupts.

using z170 gaming m5, and GTX 1060 3GB cards, 7 gpu, 6 gpu, 5 gpu, same issue, tried both windows 10 and NVoc with same issue of very high CPU, and mining crashes.

tried Claymore 9.7 9.4, Ethminer, same issue again.
tried recent nvidia driver, older driver, same issue.

anyone had such an issue, would appreciate the help, it's driving me crazy.  ??? ???

As I have found out on my board, this is due to the PCIe version. Go into the UEFI and manually set the PCIe version from "Auto" down to "1.0" - this resolved my high cpu load issues.

It took me forever to trace this down because sometimes boots would work great and other times they would do what you are experiencing. Thanks to GPUZ I was able to discover this fix.

thank you for the reply, but, I have setup both PEG0 and PEG1 to gen1 from BIOS, however I have no idea where to check;
where exactly do you find the UEFI settings you are referring to ?, be it in Windows 10  or NVOC.

thanks

PEG 0 & 1 are set and working as gen 1 according to GPU Z, the other 5 PCIE slots / GPUs are working still at gen 3, no matter what i do.

reminder, this is windows 10, any help on this is much appreciated people

Was uefi enabled when you installed Windows 10? I made a post previous in this thread where I clearly laid out how to get this board setup w 8 GPU's for dual mining. If you follow the process I did to a T - it will work. Deviate from it, and spend days of frustration. LOL, I know - it was 2 weeks of pure hell.

As a side note, In the end, I ended up burning the board due to a short. I would never buy another one TBH.

With this bone ard I've found that you have to mix and match the PCI E locations. On my Asus I just plug in the cards one at a time and it works. On this board I get 6 working, then 7, then 5, then 6, then 3. When you get 8 cards working it's like you hit the lottery.

I love the board but it's a little bit of a pain to work with. For me anyway.

thanks talat .         u seem like from middle east ..     me too .. I,m for Egypt ..

but tell me ?   is there is a Celeron Skylake ?     or its I series only ?  i3 i5  i7 ?
will sky lake dual core work ?
Intel Pentium G4400 Skylake Dual-Core 3.3GHz LGA 1151   ??

can u tell me which processor u were using first ?  I don,t want to fall into the same problem

It doesn't work ..... í te with a G4400 Skylake and  when i  turn on the G4 option the system doesn't start

Ok i made it work. On Windows 10x64 .... it is a pain in the A** .... i modify bios to version 1d ,  Above 4G Decoding set to Enabled.... but most important Windows OS Configuration
Windows 8.1 / 10 = "Enabled"....

It was very hard to install correctly the driver but finally it works

Could  you share  your bios mod??
Thank you!

Try moving around the PCIe chips into different slots and see if you get different results. I always have to do that on MSI boards to get the GPU's fired up.

I MANAGED TO RUN 8x GPU

I've been reading alot, that it is not possible to run 8x GPU with z170a chipset.
So, i have to say this is not true and i just registered here to write my experience.

I'm running 8x GPU on MSI Z170A Gaming M7. I'm using one of the M.2 Slots to get the 8th one working with an adapter

Furthermore, all the described steps are wrong in my eyes. My solution took several hours and days, because it
was just not possible to boot into windows with most tutorials (always dark grey backlit screen). Windows couldnt boot!

I'm getting some PCIe Splitters now, so i split 1 slot into 3 slots, and then i'm going to try to run 10 GPU on this board!

However, if you want me to describe my solution, just ask.
I'm @ work so i can't proof it now. My Hashrate was 228MH/s in average (using 1 rx 580, 3 rx 570 and 4 rx 480) and 1.250W from the wall.
I know consumption could be better but all cards are different so its very hard to find stable voltages and clocks.
All cards are samsung and i'm using ubermix straps. only 1 hynix card...

Tutorial on how to get 8 GPUS+ working can be requested, i'm gonna write one. Donation will be highly appreciated.

Best regards

Mr.Argful

Obviously not, because i spent hours to find solutions in the internet. Your post is just fictive and not true.
Tons of posts confirm, that they were not able to run 8x GPU on Z170A Gaming M7, so better inform yourself
instead of providing wrong information. Go posthunt somewhere else  ;)

For all others who run into the same messy situation and are desperately trying to find a solution,
just ask me.

Many thanks to all of these posts, which I know are a bit dated.

Got a MSI Z170A Gaming M7 and experienced the exact same issues.

Used 'themonkii''s recommended order of adding GPUs to each slot, after making sure I had all the settings configured correctly, and I was able to get all 7 GPUs recognized.

IS THERE A TRICK TO GETTING THE M.2, WITH PCI ATTACHMENT, TO WORK?

I'm running w/ 6 GPUs now because I have to use one of the slots for a WIFI connection (till I get a dedicated line installed upstairs where the rig is going).

But sure would like to be able to use 1 or 2 of the M.2 connections for another GPU.

The M.2 didn't recognize my PSUS WIFI when connected to it, nor did it work / recognize the Nvidia 1060 GPU.

Not sure if there is anything that needs to be configured to activate the M.2 connection, or if perhaps my adapter is crap and just not working.

My thanks to 'themonkii' and 'Benny T' and the others who posted the above, as without it there is NO WAY to get these working. These MSIs are not 'plug and play' to be used for mining, since it's painfully obvious you have to do Houdini tricks to make them work.

TO THIS POINT - Any motherboard recommendations where connecting the MB to the GPUs is very simple / plug & play, and avoid all of these gyrations to get these MSI Z170 (or similar) boards connected and up & running?

I got a ASUS B250 Mining Expert initially, but the MB did not recognize the GPU when connected via the riser. It worked just fine when the GPU was connected to the x16 slot directly to the MB. The support folks at ASUS have really let me down here, because after 3 weeks and a dozen calls / emails, NOT A SINGLE RECOMMENDATION HAS BEEN MADE TO TROUBLESHOOT / DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM (e.g. they asked if I had power to the board (duh), check the risers....when I told them 3 times the GPUs and risers checked out when connected to another MB).

Thanks again for all of ya'lls help w/ these postings.

Gillzilla.
