How can you tell if your GPU is defective? I recently bought a RX 480 Radeon RX, and it seems that it is very fickle to overclocking. I have used afterburner and wattsman, but I can’t overclock this card without it crashing. On the other side, my RX 480 Gaming X can overclock like a beast. So, I am wondering how can you decide if your GPU is defective.

and you simply  may be doing to0 big of a clock for that make and model.

I have msi red led gaming models that will do 1300 core and 2225 memory

I had an asus  dual that would not go past 1250 core and 2100 memory

Gamingx is the best , many of other brands can't catch with the gamingx in OC and also it's cooling is very efficient , i never saw any problems in my rigs until i got the gigabyte version , the minute this gigabyte catches roi i am going to resell.

if the card working fine with default , factory settings , original bios , without any overclocking,  then your card is not defective :)
is that card have a dual bios ? model number / manufacturer / memory info about te card would be nice ;)
I have some cards i can not go over 2080mhz , some of my fine tuned cards can do 2250 easy , and running stable for weeks , months

Card have artifact,no image or psyhically is broken.

for me I also encounter this kind of defect. I just returned it because it has warranty. It is factory defect that didn't detect early. It is only piece of hardware so we can't guarantee if it's 100% functional.
just try to return it. 

It is a RX 480 Radeon RX with 1338 MHz Clock speed, and it has Samsung memory with 8 GB. Everything is stock, and I can’t go past 2000 MHz on the memory speed without it crashing. My current setup is 2000 memory and 1150 clock speed. Also, do you run your cards in crossfire or SLI mode? Currently, I have crossfire off.

What are your voltages and your PSU? Insufficient voltage or a poor/overloaded PSU can negatively affect your overclocking potential.

I am only running two GPUs in my rig (480 Gaming X and 480 Radeon). I have a 760 watt power supply, so it is more than enough to cover the two GPUs. Both GPUs are running around 1000 volts, and they are pulling around 110 watts each. I haven’t undevolted yet because I am new learning the most efficient way to do it.

psu's are funky    some 760 watt psu's are multi rail  and that could be the issue.

what is exact make and model of the psu.
