Title: LITECOINS
Post by: solareclipse64236 on April 28, 2013, 10:53:51 PM
Is it worth it to use 16 core Opterons? or should I stick to GPU? What makes mining LTC harder than bitcoins?

You will be losing money by mining with those processors.  They wont produce many coins, but they will cost you a lot in electricity.

What makes mining LTC harder than bitcoins?

LTC uses the scrypt algorithm, where as bitcoin and most other cryptos use SHA-256.

only if you aren't paying for power.

I tried mining with am i5 3570k and got a pitiful 22khash/s.. wouldn't reccomend it personally.. GPU is the way to go here.

Yeah don't even bother mining with CPUs alone its really not worth the money.

Sorry to hijack, but assuming I don't have to pay for electricity, is it more efficient to mine bitcoins or litecoins with a Radeon Mobility HD 5870?

it is probably better to go to litecoins at the current time due to you only pulling a very low hash rate, you will see barely any progress with bitcoins at current difficulty

Litecoins are awesome. I just got into them myself and am a big fan.

From what I hear, mining with a laptop will burn it out really fast due to lack of airflow on heavy duty work. Best setting up a desktop rig with decent cooling and airflow.

If power is free then there's no real reason not to unless you have to pay for the wear and tear on the other system components.  You can plug your hashrate into one of the many Litecoin calculators and see what your earning potential is.  It may be worth it just for curiosity.

I'm just doing it on the side mainly. Keeping it on in the night hours for a buck a day, so hopefully I won't burn anything out too quick. Thanks for the advice though.

get 6+ 7970's, that'll do the trick

I'd even look into mining feathercoins.

It's the same algorithm and rig-setup as litecoin, but the profitability is better at the moment.

They're a bit harder to sell but you can trade them for litecoins here:

Profitability:

A lot of people think that when MtGox adds litecoin support the price is going to go up a lot; so I'd maybe mine feathercoins and swap some of them for litecoins.

I heard that the mining of litecoin not go well with the gpu

GPU are now better to mine LTCs regarding difficulty.
Still, if you're not really concerned about electricity rates, go on mining both on GPU & CPU !

Could someone recommend good Litecoin pool?

Check the pool list on github

Would not recomment notroll.in due to the recent issues.
P.S. - I recommend setting up failover one
