Title: Basic mobo/cpu for 4 GPU mining -advice sought
Post by: AtomicDog602 on May 04, 2017, 03:41:58 PM
I was looking at building a 6+ GPU rig, but the Z270 boards are so freaking expensive.  In some of those 6 gpu threads people have suggested building a 4 gpu on the cheap for faster return and this makes sense.

Is there something in the lga1151 family that is cheap and reliable that people here can suggest from experience?  I will be sourcing it from Amazon.

Thank you for your advice in advance!

If you want to build a basic setup for real cheap, I would look at the Dell XPS 700 line. They have a LGA775 socket (Core2 Duo) and 4 PCI-E slots. There are plenty on eBay and you should be able to get a used mobo, 1000W power supply, cpu and ram for ~$120. I have a three card XPS 720 rig. The only problem is you can't access the bios with a newer video card in the primary 16x slot, so I have an old Nvidia 6600 I use when I need to access the Bios. Otherwise they boot and mine just fine with three cards.

Core 2 duo is really outdated to make mining with multi GPU-s. I think you can do fine with a B150 chipset in the LGA 1151 from MSI, ASUS or GIGABYTE. All these motherboards with the B150 chipset costs 100 USD new so I think you can find it cheaper on ebay used or amazon. Also they have 2 PCIex16 to put 2 cards on them and also 3 pciex1 to put three other cards with the risers. That's the most solid choice as only the H110M chipset is cheaper than B150 and has only 1 PCiex16 and 2 pciex1 so maximum can use three cards.

op this is the best low cost 1,2,3,4 card mobo.  I own one and highly say get it.

gigabyte b250m gaming 3

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813145007

68 after rebate

I use an intel 6100t in it.

but it will use  pentium g4400t , g4560   any 1151 cpu

has 2 full slots  it can do any 2 cards  amd or nvidia  with no risers.

If you want 3,4 cards  you will need risers.

1 stick of ddr4 ram 4gb

and off you go.

as long as you want a 4 card or less build  this is pretty your best choice.

Also for 4GPU power, I suggest getting:
http://www.parallelminer.com/product/hp-750-watt-power-supply-kit-for-gpu-mining-platinum-94-zec-dash-eth/

And for the motherboard/cpu power, just whatever crappy cheap 200w POS you can find for $20. This 750W should be able to power the GPU AND risers for 4 cards pretty easily (modern risers are usually PCI-e powered as well)

Thank you so much.  Great info even on a PSU at a smoking price!

I knew people here would know what to do.  Makes ramping up from a small 2 GPU miner, to a second 4 GPU rig a little less trouble.

I know nothing is cheap.  I did go with the pentuin 4400 suggestion also.  I was looking at that exact CPU already so you confirmed my belief that it was plenty.

Hey guys, Brand new here.

I bought  the Gygabyte b250m gaming 3 , g400 , and a really nice 1000w PSU. I have 3 asus strix 970's

Im anle to get all the cards working in wither of the pcie x16 slot but as soon as I plug in a 1x usb riser I cant get any signal from any card in slot.

I have searched through thw bios settings a million times and just cant seem to get it working.
I have updated bios, drivers, etc.

Does this mobo have certain bios settings?

Thanks!

you can try setting somewhere in bios : PCIE link speed / speed -> GEN1

Also make sure you use 100% working 1x usb riser (try it first on the main GPU slot and make sure card is visible in device manager )and  then try it on the pcie x1 slots -> Shut down pc , plug card in main slot pcie x16 , then put another one in the pcie x1 , then turn on pc . See if comes up in device manager .   There shouldn't be any bios mods to make usb risers work , only if u are trying to put 4 + video cards , windows handles how the usb driver is recognised and is working. If you try above and it's not working than probably mobo might be faulty and you need to return it .
