Title: AMD FM2 vs Intel motherboards
Post by: dbc23 on May 12, 2017, 10:15:43 PM
It seems there's an overwhelming preference (even for 4 card rigs) for intel based motherboards.  I've been using a few FM2+ rigs for a few months now, since that's what i had handy as spare parts and they're working fine as best I can tell.

I'm curious if there's any particular reason most people tend towards Intel based motherboard/chipsets rather than AMD?

Is there something I'm missing?

Intel popularity vs. AMD would be my guess - though to be fair Intel has better support overall on their motherboards for more than 3 cards per motherboard, and certainly work a lot better with 4 cards on current and recent motherboards except the "can't find any more" Gigabyte -UD7 model(s) (which were a bit on the pri$ey side).

I'm one of the exceptions though, as my go-to board for rig building for the last year or so has been the ASRock FM2A88X Extreme6+ - but I don't generally build "pure" rigs, I also have most of my rigs working the GPU side of the APU on the Moo Wrapper / BOINC / Distributed Net RC5-72 project, and the CPU running BURST mining.

I recently bought an AMD 990FX board in haste off of CL, because I didn't want to wait for shipping of an intel board.  I could not get two Nvidia cards to work in it properly, no matter what I tried.  In retrospect, I would have been much better off waiting for the intel motherboard via mail order.

Just my experience. One of the cards is a Dell branded GTX 1080.  Maybe since it's an OEM card it has restricted compatibility?

The whole thing was a big run-around.

I have been a fan of AMD for years and all my GPU rigs use AMD cpu motherboards.
Obviously all my GPUs are are AMD Chipset also.  ;)

Interesting mix of responses, I tend to be an AMD fan too.  My eth rigs are on extreme 6+ boards as well.  Have an nvidia 1070 rig as well and all seem to work fine with risers, etc...

I'm going to look more at those APU uses since they all have one.

Thanks for the input.

Sounds like you have a drivers or card issue, or didn't set up the BIOS on the MB correctly for multi-card.

I've got multiple NVidia cards working on a pair of 970FX boards - the 990FX is a higher-end chipset that should work at least as well.

I currently have 5 rigs up and running (3 Intel and 2 AMD)
My 2 AMD Asrock Fatality 970 Performance boards with FX8320E's (5x RX480 and 5x RX470) and both run like raped apes!  Most stable of all my rigs...  Would not hesitate to get more of these if I ran across them at the right price.

My 3 Intel boards, 1 is a G-byte with an I-7 and 5x RX 470's runs smooth.... My other two Intel boards Asus H270 Prime and Asrock H170 both with Sky Lake chips and running Nvidia cards now.  Had some issues with getting all the slots to register for risers and cards.  Had issues with one running a Caby Lake chip... Changed it over to a Sky Lake like the other and that seemed to sort out a lot of the issues.

I think fm2 mobos are better in power consumption and it seems for me it's better in stability also.
