Title: Quad core CPU performance
Post by: billiophile on June 19, 2011, 12:05:39 AM
I've an E8400 dual core quietly running at full tilt, mining with 2 x 5850. I know the GPU is much quicker but since the guiminer relies so heavily on the GPU (but max'ing out the CPU at the same time), is there much point in upgrading to a quad core CPU?

Not sure if it's worth overclocking my current CPU or to purchase Q8300 quad core for about £100.

Well since you've already invested so much in your graphics cards, not really. I run an Intel Quad Core Q8300 running at 2.5Ghz, and I only get about 20-25MHash/second.

Didn't know if the quad core CPU would actually benefit the overall hashrate whilst the 2 GPUs are mining.

Possibly, but my guess is it would be more breathing room than anything else. Maybe 10-20MHash extra.

Mmmmm, certainly not worth £100 on a C2D quad core then, unless of course the Q9xxx chips are at that price (most new / used ones around £150+ on eBay).
