Title: TREZOR - How can I recover a passphrase wallet in Electrum.
Post by: Biro Bob on May 16, 2017, 09:47:55 AM
Hi All.

I've just bought a Trezor and have been experimenting to ensure I can recover the wallets in the case of a disaster.

So far I have successfully been able to recreate and get access to the Public and Private Keys when using just the 24 word seed in Electrum.

However, I have not been able to get access to the Public and Private Keys when using the 24 word seed with a passphrase.

The steps I've taken so far are:

1) What Kind of Wallet do you want to create? "Standard Wallet"

2) I already have a seed.

3) I enter the 24 word seed, select advanced options and tick both boxes ("Extend this seed with custom words" and "BIP39 Seed")

4) I then enter my passphrase in the "Seed Extension" dialog box.

5) I leave BIP44 account number blank .

6) It generates addresses... but not the same ones as my Trezor.

Please can you let me know how to do this?

As you may know, the 25th passphrase is added onto the seed so it will generate a new set of addresses. When you go and enter the seed, click the "Option" button and select both bip39 seed and "extend this seed with custom words". That should allow you to enter your passphrase as the 25th word (make sure you enter the seed first then click next to enter the passphase). Havent tried it myself but thats a question I shouldve asked myself (though I do have multiple hw wallets so i could restore the seed using those). Give it a try and let me know how it goes

Biro Bob,

Relax its a simple process.  I have done it several times to make sure too.  We have a few threads in the Electrum forum on the subject.  If you do a quick check there you should find what you want.  Suggestion: if you actually enter the Trezor seed and the password onto a computer to check that is fine, but afterwards I would reset the Trezor and use a wallet where NO seed has ever been on my computer.  My .02

Yes please listen to that advice. Once you type the seed on a computer you have lost all security. Wipe that Trezor and start over. The latest Trezor firmware allows you to recover your Trezor from seed securely using advanced recovery (https://blog.trezor.io/using-advanced-recovery-on-trezor-4af0eb53c3bb).

Most people who use Trezor keep a spare around. Once you have a few dollars in an account on your Trezor wipe it clean and restore from seed to prove to yourself that all you need is to keep the 24 word seed safe and in order.

Hi Bob,

I'm going through the exact same thing.

Did you manage to solve it?

5) I leave BIP44 account number blank .
What version of Electrum are you using? I suspect you are attempting to use an older version, as the latest version (v2.9.3) asks for the Derivation Path, NOT the BIP44 Account number... perhaps this is what is causing issues?

I've just tested with a Trezor test seed that I use, and 2 different passphrases using Electrum v2.9.3... and both times it is generated the same addresses as the Trezor wallet with that seed and those passphrases

5) It will prompt for Derivation Path... Leave as m/44'/0'/0'
6) It generates addresses which will be the same ones as your Trezor.
