  I had .77 bitcoin in a multibits wallet.  now it shows 0 bitcoin. Can I  get it back?  I tried everything.  Thank You!!

MultiBit Classic or MultiBit HD?

Do you have any backups from that wallet? Its almost three years to be counted from 2014, then when was your last access of that wallet. If your computer never had formated, and if no one inside your house get your coins which is impossible because you said that you computer went off.  Then its still there maybe you only need to wait until the client fully sync.

I'm going to go ahead and guess that due to your use of the term "reset blockchain", that it looks like the first one and you have "MultiBit Classic"... If that is that case, when did you receive the 0.77 BTC that are now missing... was it to a new address generated from just before the power outage?

It is possible that the power outage may have caused damage to your wallet file... :(

Ideally you should make backups of your wallet before you do anything else.

If you are running windows you can use these instructions to make backups.


Backup everything inside the folder that opens, including all the files and sub-folders.

Afterwards keep that folder open and try these instructions to get your coins.


Inside the folder you kept open there should be a new file with an extension ending in ".key". Open it in notepad and copy your wallet's private key. In the example file below the private key is the bit in red.



After you get your private key install the electrum wallet and use these instructions to import the private key into electrum.

Hopefully your Bitcoins should immediately show up in electrum and be spendable from it. Don't let anyone know your private key because they can use it to steal your Bitcoins.

Multibit classic's maximum allowable fees aren't high enough for dealing with today's massive backlog of unconfirmed transactions. It's best to import the private key into electrum, enable dynamic fees in it, and spend your coins from there. That way you will get fast confirmations.

Thank you for your detailed explanation. Please see my screenshot - the blockchain is stuck at "waiting". I can see some transactions until 2015, but not after that. I have left my computer overnight on but it's still not showing the wallet balance also.

Also I cannot export the private key as the whole menu is grayed out. Please help, much appreciated!

What does it say in the log if you goto "View" -> "Messages"? Are there any obvious error messages?

What happens if you click "file", then "open wallet" as shown in the screenshot?

Does the window that opens show any extra wallet files that aren't already loaded in your multibit?

Try switching your internet connection off and restarting multibit a few times. It might fix the greyed out menu problem. Your multibit wallet doesn't need to be synced to export the private keys. You can export them from an offline unsynced wallet.

If only your problem is about lost backups, I mean a certain file and you want to dig your hard drive, I can help.

I have a powerful tool that can recover most of the files lost even it was years ago when it lost. I tried many third party recovery program but it doesn't work. Only this helps me a lot that's why I saved it. I thought that is impossible but it recovered all my files. I just don't know if it's a allowed to share apps like that since it was a crack version.

Using that window try opening the folder path below, but replacing yourUserName with your user name on your windows computer.

C:\Users\yourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Multibit\

If you can't find an AppData folder then you probably need to enable the windows show hidden files and folders setting. To do that open the windows control panel, click "appearance and personalisation", click "folder options", click the "view" tab in the window that opens. Check the "show hidden files, folders and drives" option.

So there were no .key files anywhere in the %appdata%\MultiBit directory or subdirectories?

If you've had the wallet for a while there are bound to be backup files in there... They get generated automatically. I would not give up hope just yet, there are a couple more things you can try. :)

  I did get a multibit  (notepad) log.  it has a truck load of stuff in it starting multibit at 21 jan 2014.  Is there any way to get multibit wallet?

Can you take a screenshot of your %appdata%\MultiBit directory?

You are looking for a "[walletname]-data" directory. My wallet is just called multibit.wallet, so I have a "multibit-data" directory...

And then in that, there should be some "-backup" directories...

hopefully the key-backup and/or wallet-backup and/or rolling-backup directories have some files in them. The "wallet-backup" one might be a good place to start... but failing that, the "key-backup" directory might have files that contain your private keys!

These files can be generated automatically by MultiBit, so even if you haven't explicitly backed up the wallet file or exported your keys, there is a good chance the files still exist! :)

@OP: Do not lose hope, looking at your posts I sincerely believe there are high chances of recovering your wallet / Bitcoins. It's just a matter of looking for the backups in the right places. Listen to other posters, they're really doing a fine job at guiding you through the process. If you're still not sure, share your screen via TeamViewer with someone so that we can do this faster.

Thank you very much for your help. I was successfully able to :

1. Export the private keys from Multibit Classic (disconnected the internet, solved the grayed out problem)
2. Imported into Electrum
3. Did a sweep of all the balance into new Electrum address with high fee for fast transaction

I think the problem was that I had over 200 wallet addresses which was causing the blockchain sync/reset issue

  Ok get this, I found a pic of the check I used to buy my first part of a bitcoin.  it has an address they sent it to?  I think??  it was from-Digicurrency LLC.  with a line of letters in the memo line.  can this be followed back?  part of part of a bitCoin is better than no part at all!!

when I open with Notepad the info is encrypted.  but it is bitCoin stuff but only a single line of info.  I did not open all of them because I cant get them out of notepad.

What did you open with Notepad? which file exactly... what is the name?

If you are sure you know the password for your wallet file... there is a very good chance that we can recover your bitcoins.  You want to look for files that have names like (NOTE: the numbers will be different!):

multbit.wallet
multibit-20170602232432.key
multibit-20170602232432.wallet
multibit-20170602232432.wallet.cipher

You may need to look in "key-backup", "wallet-backup" and "wallet-unenc-backup" directories...

rolling-backup = 1 line of encrypted data=  but it dose say BitCoin = in notepad.

 Wallet -backup = empty file

 wallet - unenc - backup has stuff in it.  2 folders and 6 pages.  all untitled data and a sting of numbers.

 I hope this is making sense. as you can see I'm very UN educated in computers. or self taught. I'm just an old guy trying to have something to give to my grandchildren.

ok, so in wallet-unenc-backup... do you see a file titled something similar to:

it might be called untitled-20170602232432.wallet.cipher or untitled-20170602232432.wallet? I need to know the exact file name, so I can be sure you have the right file.

 Icant find what you want BUT I came up with a file that says  MultiBit > Multibit data> Wallet-Backup
 
  it has 10 files not folders.  all notepad. all encrypted. all from 2-4-14 or so.  tells of 3%this received  20% on and on.  it looks like my money info encrypted.  2 are in Asian writing

OK... can you please tell me the EXACT name(s) of the files that have "Asian writing"...

In Windows, you may need to right click on the file and select "Properites" to see the full file name (as Windows sometimes likes to hide the end part of the name)

Can you take screenshot of that folder, where we can see the list of files and their names? You can upload the screenshot on imgur.com and post the link here. I think it would be in the best interest of everyone if we can actually LOOK into the folder to see what's there. Otherwise it may take much longer to do this.

I don't think that is the correct name... :-\ I agree with eXpl0sive... a screenshot would be incredibly helpful to us. It would certainly, make it easier to identify exactly what files you have available and therefore what process we will be able to use to help you recover your coins.

Preferably, I would like you to take a screen shot showing the contents of the wallet-unenc-backup AND one of the wallet-backup folders. I feel pretty confident that the right files are there based on what you've described so far, but by actually seeing the folder contents we will be able to confirm it and give you more precise instructions.

We won't ask a screenshot of anything that can be used to steal your BTC. We will only ask for the info which will enable YOU to recover your coins, nobody would be able to touch them.

Don't post screenshots of any of those files opened in notepad showing the text inside.
Just post the screenshot of the folder, showing what files are there.

I hope OP isn't messing around with us. Every time we ask for some information, he comes up with something really absurd.

  I'm having hell trying to screen shot.  I do have the exact same thing you show in your second screenshot.

  I swear I'm not messing anyone around.  I just can't get screen shot to work.  I have the exact backup files that are shown in post #22 from HCP.
 

I didn't forget.  after 2.1/2 hours of trying to screeshot, trying to drag and drop,  trying to copy and paste.  that's what I got =Nothing!  it's not because I'm not trying.

Ok... it looks like there are a couple of backup copies of your wallet file... which is great news! The problem is that extracting your keys from this file can be a bit technical and complicated :-\

So, you currently have a couple of options...

Option 1. You can copy these two files:
untitled-20170517163027info
untitled-20170517163027wallet

from the wallet-unenc-backup folder, to the %appdata%/MultiBit directory. You should then be able to open MultiBit and go "File -> "Open Wallet" and then open the "untitled-20170517163027wallet" wallet file.

If you get asked for the password, just use your wallet password. Hopefully, that will open your wallet and start synchronizing with the network. After a long wait, you will hopefully see all your coins.

Option 2. If that doesn't work... then you would need to try to run some wallet recovery scripts on your backup file and that is where it gets very technical and complicated. :(

So give Option #1 a go... and hopefully it works... if it doesn't we'll have to try something else.

Appdata is a folder that's normally hidden by windows. Multibit wallets put a folder inside the hidden appdata folder. You can open it using these instructions.

It is the main MultiBit folder that contains the untitled-data folder (that contains the key-backup and wallet-unenc-backup dirs etc)... it should also contain some other files like "wallet.spvchain"

Ok, I think we are getting a little confused because windows is not configured to show the files types correctly in Windows Explorer (where you are looking at your folders and files)... so you aren't seeing the "Full" file names... To correct this, you need to:

1. Click on Start button in the bottom left corner of the desktop

2. Type "Folder Options" in the box at the bottom and you should get an option at the top that says "Folder Options", click on that:

3. You'll get a window titled "Folder Options" pop up. Click on the "View" Tab at the top and then make sure that "Hide extensions for known file types" is UNCHECKED:

4. Click "Apply" and then "OK".

Now, when you look in the appdata\Roaming\MultiBit directory... you should see the FULL filename for each file:

multibit.info
multibit.key
multibit.properties
multibit.spvchain

etc.

What you want to do is copy the "File #8 is from 2/18/14 wallet file" that you found in wallet-backup and copy that into the appdata\roaming\MultiBit directory. Then inside MultiBit program "File -> Open Wallet" and select the file #8 that you copied.

That will hopefully show you all your coins.

If you can't copy the file, you should be able to just open MultiBit program... then select "File -> Open Wallet"

You will get a Window open that allows you to select a wallet file. You should be able to see the "multibit-data" folder... double click that... and then double click the "wallet-backup" folder. You should see your backup files.

Select the one from the date before your bitcoins disappeared and then click open. This should open your wallet backup and you should be able to see your coins (assuming they have not been hacked/stolen).

No, you should open it from inside the MultiBit program... then use "File -> Open Wallet". Don't try and open it in wordpad or notepad etc.

Also, you have opened the multibit.info file... you want to open the multibit.wallet file (or the multibit-[YYYYMMDDHHMMSS].wallet file from your wallet-backup folder). The YYYYMMDDHHMMSS is the Year-Month-Day-Hours-Mins-Seconds that the file was created.

Pick the one that has the date before all your coins went away.

You can also check those "receive" addresses on www.blockchain.info (or another block explorer) to make sure they still have coins in them.

No, no one can steal your coins just because you checked the address on blockchain.info

And regarding opening the wallet from inside Multibit:

So you have opened MultiBit...

And you selected: "File" -> "Open Wallet"

It should have opened a window asking you to select a wallet file, did you see something like this:

You should go back to the main multibit window, and it will start synchronising the wallet. This may take a while, so be patient. :) After this has finished you should see all your addresses, transactions and coins.

 is there a way to put the addresses in manually.  one at a time.

 adding the file has not worked.  I tried many  times.

I beginning to wonder if you have been hit with the MultiBit wallet corruption issues that a couple of other users have had... :-\

Either that, or you've been hacked and don't actually have any bitcoins left... have you actually checked your addresses on a block explorer like blockchain.info to see if they still contain coins?

  It was a power shut down when the wallet was open.

  Yes I checked one address and it showed .1 bitcoin,  so I still have my coins. I just cant load them in the bitcoin wallet.

Did your multibit wallet have a password? If it's corrupted but didn't have a password then retrieving the coins will probably be easier than if it has a password.

  No password.  I live alone and no one around here knows what BitCoin is.  I didn't want to get locked out of it also.

I can't promise anything, but if your multibit wallet file is only a little corrupted you might be able to use the quoted instructions to get your coins back. Basically they explain how to open your multibit wallet file in something called a hex editor and use it to search for 08011220. If you find that number then the next 64 characters (32 bytes) could be a private key for your wallet.

You can change that private key to a format the electrum wallet accepts, and import it into electrum to get your coins back.

The most frustrating part about all this is that it would probably take less than 5 minutes to recover all of the coins... no password on a MultiBit Classic wallet means that with a simple python script, all the private keys can be dumped directly from one of the wallet files in the "wallet-unenc-backup" directory :-\

However, I get the feeling that installing Python and using a command line based Python script is going to be way beyond the technical ability of the OP, given their obvious struggle with some computing basics like working Explorer and copy/paste.  :-\

So, I have been experimenting with "pyinstaller" and "Tkinter" to create a standalone Python version of my script that extracts pubkeys and privkeys from MultiBit Classic .wallet files. I have even created a GUI for the script, so the user doesn't need to know or use the commandline... you just extract all the files from the .zip and run the .exe from Windows Explorer:

• Yes, I know distributing .exe's is not best practice... but if you read this thread from the start, you'll understand why I have chosen this solution. :-\
• The source script is included in the github repository, so it can be peer reviewed and/or you can "compile" it yourself using pyinstaller.

I tried to install an Electrum wallet on my computer and Norton antivirus said it is unsafe and removed it.  wonderful!!

Hundreds of thousands of people use Electrum everyday. And it is OPEN SOURCE. It is not a malware. Are you sure you downloaded it from their official site?

Because Electrum contains some functions involving encryption... (which is something a lot of viruses and trojans do to try and prevent detection/removal) it is quite common for antivirus software to generate a "false positive"... Antivirus software isn't always 100% accurate (and Norton certainly isn't close to being the best either. ::))

There are a lot more than 5 people using Electrum... there are thousands if not hundreds of thousands... if there was a problem, we'd all know about it!

Like op I'm also strugling with an old Multibit wallet created back in 2013 when I first bought my bitcoin. As a holder I kept my btc safe in a pendrive but  recently I tryied to move them back to Multibit  0.4 and it didn't work. I have my prvtkeys and public adress. Is this enough? Can someone help me

If you have your private keys, there is nothing to be worried about. You have tons of wallet options to import your private keys (including my favorite Electrum) and it is damn simple.

But if you're planning to spend these coins, I would advice to wait for a few days because of the ongoing drama about the Bitcoin fork (BCC).

PS: And by the way, congrats! You got free BCC for each BTC you own  :D

Meanwhile, I downloaded electrum and you're right, it's really simple. I chose the read-only wallet for now, because I can import the private keys later, right?

Electrum doesn't show the bcc tho, as I expected after reading somewhere it would. Well, I'll keep on reading the forum till I find out or get the answer from smarter people with an infinite patience  :)

Electrum is not (and probably will not be) compatible with BCC (unless ThomasV makes some updates)... BCC changed the way transactions are created/signed to prevent people losing BTC due to what is known as a "replay attack"... BTC transactions are now no longer valid on BCC network... and BCC transactions are not valid on BTC network...

To get BCC, you need to use a BCC wallet.

I saw it here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2040221.0 the site is now saying they have nothing to do with electrum but they confuse people by naming the wallet "electron".

If I'm geting this right, there's a few steps before using a bcc wallet because I don't have the bcc yet,  I have to send my btc to an exchange first and then get both btc and bcc back to 2 wallets.

Some people are buying hard wallets like treasure, because you can have both coins in there. Feeling very confused at the moment  ::)

Anyway, if you were to recommend a bcc wallet witch one is safer, in your view

Firstly... No, you don't need to send your BTC to an exchange. There are already BCC associated with the same private keys/addresses that you currently have for BTC.

The suggestion for moving coins is to protect your BTC. The idea being that you move all your BTC to a new wallet with new private keys... then use your OLD keys to import into a BCC wallet. This way, if the BCC wallet is "Bad"™... and sends your private keys out to "BadGuy"™, they can only steal your BCC as your BTC is now controlled by completely different private keys.

The issue with Electron Cash, is that while it is open source... they are distributing binaries that are basically signed by an "anonymous" user... as opposed to Electrum where ThomasV signs them under his actual real name.

So we can all see the Electron Cash source... and the modifications to it... and see that (aside from the porting bugs and the copying of Electrum wallet data by default) it doesn't do anything obviously nefarious... however, we can't see inside the binaries, which may or may not have been built from modified source code... and the "anonymous" digital signature is kinda worthless as there is no one putting their good (and real) name on the line as a sort of 'insurance' that it is all above board.

You can download the source and run from there... but it isn't quite as easy as just download and double click, so not really for your average computer user.

Honestly, I'd probably use BitcoinABC (requires syncing the whole blockchain) or ElectronCash (requires some trust or computer knowledge)... Other than that... I couldn't really say

I have 2 laptops should I try to load the bitcoin files into the wallets on those computers? one has classic and one has HD I think.  Thanks for your help. 

  I think the wallet I have been trying to load is messed up.  the help button doesn't show anything when you click on it. the Help contents is a blank page.

You got that error when you attempted to use my utility? I'm not sure how you got that from my Python script... when that is a java based error... hmmmm ???

Extracted it... ran the .exe file and selected your wallet file... and you got that error?

  No. I get the error when I try to upload the backup file back in to the wallet.  I will try your utility today.   

Now Norton said Electrum "is Safe".  Now I have an Electrum wallet!!!!

Well... I guess we can call that "progress". Fingers crossed that the private keys you exported from the MultiBit wallet import OK into Electrum and your coins show up...


Speaking of... did you actually manage to run the utility? did you finally manage to get the keys exported from MultiBit Classic?

Good to hear you managed to get it all sorted mate! With current BTC prices, 0.77 BTC is a considerable amount of money!

Did you just "import" your private keys? Or did you "sweep" them into a full Electrum wallet that has "12 word recovery seed"?

Just wanting to make sure you understand the difference and especially the fact that if you imported them, you need to make sure you have a backup of the Electrum wallet file and/or the private keys themselves!

If you created an Electrum wallet with a 12 word seed, you just need to make sure you have those 12 words written down and stored safely offline!

  I haven't done anything with it yet,  just recovered it and put a password on wallet.  now I'm trying to get the bitcoin cash thing done before i mess anything up by moving it. 

 some say to move bitcoin then use private key from 2014 to get the bitcoin cash.  so that is where I'm at. going to move to Electrum wallet.
