Title: what if computer crashes
Post by: dewman on June 19, 2011, 01:35:02 PM
hi guys,

ok here is the quick question I have..

1. I download the vallet.
2. I get paid and my balance becomes more then 0
3. my computer totally crashes and I cannot restore a thing from my harddrive

- will I still be ablve to restore my balance on the other computer?
- how would I do this if the newly downloaded client creates new vallets and technically I expect it to be prompted for authorization if it goes for my vallet that was originally on the computer that crashed forever?

Thanks a lot

by vallet you mean wallet?  As in the wallet.dat file that bitcoin creates?

If so, you need to keep a copy of that wallet.dat file somewhere.  Whoever holds the wallet has access to the account.

your wallet.dat contains the keys that allow to you access the money people send you (or you generate).

If you lose these keys, you lose your money.   Protect your wallet.dat file like you would protect cash.  There's many many 100s of threads with advice on the best way to do this.

Clearly you didn't read the thread that you should read before asking questions! (http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=15918.0)

But to help you out, checkout this wiki article (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Securing_your_wallet) for basic wallet backup.  With a little bit of searching you can find out how to encrypt it as well.

ups.. sorry for the typo. Yes indeed.
So you say if I do not have the copy the money is lost for me and for entire community?
is there any way to restore it after the file is totally lost?

no, there is no way to restore the balance if the wallet containing the private keys is permanently lost.
