Title: Magic: the Gathering Tournament at Bitcoin Conference 2013 in San Jose
Post by: btcx on May 04, 2013, 09:35:39 PM
Hey guys,

This might be too much awesome for one weekend but I'm sure we've got enough Magic players in the community to pull it off.  I just want to gauge what the interest might be in participating in a friendly Magic tournament, probably booster draft of the latest block.

Please sign here if you're interested and if it looks like we can do it, I'll handle the product acquisition, location, logistics.

I've only played a couple times, so no tourney for me. But I'd like to sit down for a couple games and get schooled.

I have a bunch of cards I want to trade. Is there some sort of Magic The Gathering Online eXchange?

I can trade you some, but there will be loads of lag and eventually you will end up with only half of your cards.

Well that would pretty much cement the Bitcoin = Nerds label if word gets out that we had a Magic: the Gathering tournament going on at our conference.

Why not. I would be down to play, though all my cards are super old.

I would probably need a deck and to train up on what is new.

I was thinking just booster draft the Return to Ravnica block, which recently had its 3rd set, Dragon's Maze, released:  http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Products.aspx

No need to bring your own cards.  Vague understanding of the rules would be helpful.

I have a feeling we'll be pretty busy at the conference but I would still be down to play. I'd pre-pay in BTC if you pick up the necessary packs. Part of the reason I want to play is to celebrate MTG's special relationship with BTC.  ;D

What about doing a draft tournement (http://midmagic.com/Master.aspx) from a particular set?   Those are fun and everybody is equal because the packs get passed around

Since LetsTalkBitcoin! is covering the event, I doubt I'd have time to play - but I do enjoy a good draft.

The last time I played magic was PAX 2007, has the trend of "shit gets more powerful so you better buy the new edition" continued?

not really, It's sort of marginal. The incentive to buy new product is the fact that the most popular format besides draft is standard, which only uses sets from the past 1-2 years.

I actually have an online account I'd happily sell for BTC, here's a dump:

Actually, why don't I just add that to the Marketplace?
