Uhh, I don't think that those keys really will do anything. I mean, the keyspace is so huge and vast that it would be a dismal effort to check one by one which has some money on it and which doesn't. Also, theoretically brute-forcing bitcoin would require a huge amount of energy enough to drain our sun's own power.

Vitalik Buterin is kinda high on some drugs of some sort.

To me it shows that in a matter of years all balances will go zero. I'm not sure BTC is so safe anymore.
Someone broswing all day on this could gather something by chance.

You could just show the message instead of a link. That guy from Ethereum:
Quote
Retweeting for the benefit of those who haven't seen this yet: http://directory.io

After hard-forking for his own financial gain, he's now attacking Bitcoin with FUD. That's just sad.
When will his bubble pop? A 3000% increase in 6 months, what can possible go wrong?

Since I wrote this, Bitcoin is going down. Coincidence? It could very well be Ethereum is indeed attrackting billions of dollars of dumb money.

I hadn't seen this in a while ;) the community already freaked out about this, it's cool.

The site is 100% valid. All those key pairs should work just fine. The thing is, despite all those key pairs that got revealed on the site, there are still so many possible keypairs that the entire site is inconsequential. There are a near infinity of possible bitcoin addresses. If we deplete them, the protocol can be changed. Like above poster said, if anything this points out how robust bitcoin is.

This is also why we should practice good hygiene, and not reuse addresses too much. Whip up a new one, it's the only way to stay pseudonymous.

For those who just don't believe in the safety of the technology, why don't you just go to that list, find out some of Satoshi's old private-key and buy a new Lambo if is that simple?

There are 128 private-keys per page.
904625697166532776746648320380374280100293470930272690489102837043110636675 pages

Number of private-keys: 1.1579209e+77

Good luck finding anything that may have some value. (Don't forget to give me a TIP with your new wallet)

Idk why would someone waste their time browsing through that seeing that it came from ETHs lead dev who hard forked his own coin for self gains. Good luck on believing through some made up shit though. :)

Lol that database is damn to large, but the most important thing that people can be victims is to search there by private key to see if their address is there or not!!

I think that that the owner of that website is just joking and making people to search for their addresses or/and their private key and that could be a prank!

Quote
Q: Can I search by private key?
A: Yes. @see API documentation.

Q: Should I search by private key?
A: No. I log and steal everything.

Not sure if Vitalik is trolling or providing a resource.

The site is misleading.  This is a key generator, not an actual Database of private keys.

There are 2^256 possible private keys, or 1.15 x 10^77.

Assuming state of the art drives can hold 100 gigabytes per square inch, and a bitcoin private key is 32 bytes,
this means 3.125 billion keys can be stored per square inch, so a database of all private keys would require 3.7 x 10^67 square inches of area.

Since the earth's surface is only 7.93 x 10^17 square inches, you would need an area equal to 4.67 x 10^49 earths.

That's over 46 trillion Trillion Trillion TRILLION earths.

After seeing the tweet and perusing those addresses I concluded its just a waste of time continue to create panic in the crypto world so I won't add to it by retweeting. I feel he is one of those that are against the continued progression of bitcoin and thought its better he add to the quest and mission of bringing it down.

If those are fake I guess the real intention of those behind it is to cause big panic enough to bring Bitcoin to its knee.

Those things look fake but still scary. could cause some panic if not addressed

Not sure if Vitalik is trolling or providing a resource

He is scaring people from Bitcoin

This question (about that resource with allegedly all Bitcoin addresses) has already been beaten to death here. It should be obvious and clear to anyone with a half functioning brain that this "directory" cannot possibly contain all those pages enumerated on the front page (anyone is welcome to try searching his private key there and see if their coins don't disappear). Regarding "Vitalik", he might know something (likely not very good for Ethereum), and so he might be trying to deliberately sling mud at Bitcoin

Vitalik has too much time on his hands and too much money. I know Russian trolling is well known and respected around the world but come on, I thought he was better than this. Also, it's about time to change that old picture, he looks like a 15yo.

The truth is that Bitcoin may not be so secure as it seams at first glance, there are some security breaches but I don't think there is much truth in this tweet and there is definetely no need for panic.
Unfortunately every day we witness some attempts to discredit the Bitcoin and some of them are realy lously.

Looks like you have a good experience with it.  ;D It is a complete waste of time checking out the private keys because i am sure you wont find a single key which has bitcoins in it,since the site lacks a search function i was not able to search specific wallet address and most of the wallets displayed have zero transactions .

It took a lot of computing power to generate this database. it was clearly written there that means its clear that his program was not finding used bitcoin addresses insted it was creating new bitcoin addresses into the network. it seems very frustrating that one person created so many addresses and its just a waste now. i have seen this site a while ago like around a year ago maybe. this is basically the person who is trying to spam the bitcoin network.

He posted a link to that site without clear irony.  That just screams "complete dickhead" from the rooftops.

If only ETH was actually a decentralised project, maybe I'd start putting money into it.  But I feel alone here as someone who expects ETH to go up, but isn't investing in it because it would be supporting that clown.  Everyone else either thinks ETH is going to collapse or thinks it's the future - neither is true.

ETC is a much better project anyway. Decentralized and fixed supply and not in a huge bubble. Still cheap to accumulate.

It doesn't work like that; You don't "create" Bitcoin addresses. All the addresses on that site are simply generated on the fly when you access a certain page. It doesn't spam the network unless the addresses are actually used in a transaction.

Why don't you try using every single one of them, that is so many that even your grandson will be having a hard time continuing what you have done. We all know that private keys are hard to crack, as you can see on these site, and also, if you observed enough, you can see these is a prank when you look at it's pages, the naker of these site just literally list down the possible Bitcoin Adress and Private keys of a wallet.

Like anybody else here, i searched my own address. I realized those are only vanitygen addresses btw. All the private keys start with "5". My non-vanitygen/pure random address's private key is starting with a letter and i'm sure it is not there.

No lol. First of all directory.io doesn't actually store that many keys on their site. We have discussed this before. They only generate keys as you press the different pages. And think about it - even if they do store all the bitcoin private keys that will ever exist, you have to have so much computing power to browse through all of them. There are bitcoin colliders out there but no more than 10 private keys containing bitcoin has ever been found. Compare this to credit card fraud rates or your perfectmoney account getting hacked - it's much more secure.

I don't know why Vitalik is posting this. To spread FUD and get people to invest in his centralised shitcoin? Most probably.

Here's the deal, this website supposedely contains all possible private keys for ONE address. It'd be impossible to skim it to find the key of it. Your chances of doing so are close to zero.

Thing is through, it's a nice way to visualize the impossibility of guessing the private key of an address. But really nothing more than that!

Exactly - this site is nothing more than a service like bitaddress. It generates a bitcoin address and private keys on the spot. In fact if you are willing to take the risk you could probably go to a page in the middle somewhere, get a private key and address and start using it(do it at your own risk because the code is unaudited). No way they were going to store all the database of bitcoin private keys in one website.

It's misleading as hell.

It's been around since at least 2015 which was the first time i saw it.

I don't blame you for freaking out, i thought that bitcoin was hacked as well. Why is Mr. Buterin mentioning it now? Is he trying to spread FUD and get people to invest in Ethereum? Probably. This is nothing new and nothing to worry about - to go through this so called "database" will take thousands of centuries with current technology at least.

It would be harmless if it wasn't posted by Bitcoin's first competitor

But since it is, people are taking it exactly as that, i.e. as FUD intended at slinging mud at Bitcoin. The boy is certainly too young to understand such things, and understand that it will work against his coin in the long run. As the saying goes, when you say what you think, think what you say. I'm curious why people would ever want to put their money in this coin given its centralized nature and governance by someone with a 15 year old's mentality (apart from speculating, of course)

From what I remember there was a person on this forum that posted that same website that is in the Tweet when it was 2015 or so. There was a few people talking about it though the list inside of that directory has a bunch of addresses yet the private keys didn't match the address that it was linked to.

I am not sure if the website changed over the years, the odds are it didn't so this could just be a joke from Vitalik or fud so his project could get more recognition.

You'd think that industry experts are from a different cut of cloth. That we're not the same sort of people who believe Facebook Times and Whatsapp Tribune just because it's out there. At best it was an irresponsible tweet. At worst, it displays just the sort of common gullibility we don't want to believe industry experts share with the rest of us.

It's not scary at all. It's actually been there for a while now and nobody really pays attention to it because honestly it's something that doesn't affect bitcoin at all nor does it do anything - apart from scaring newbies i guess.

Quote
Read this: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=354518.msg3794536#msg3794536

I'm not sure what the purpose of that site is, unless it's a joke. It isn't a database (that would be impossible), it's generating the pages in response to queries. So possibly an attempt at a scam, as in you look for your private key, and the holder of the list uses the generated pages to narrow down the possible addresses that have actually been used (there are 2^160 possible addresses, or 1,461,501,637,330,902,918,203,684,832,716,283,019,655,932,542,976). Since people have trouble putting that in perspective, there are only 2^63 grains of sand on all the beaches of Earth.

The total number of bitcoin addresses in use is so much smaller than the amount of possible addresses, that something like this is completely and utterly useless, and it would also be trivial to expand the number of possible addresses in the future. I laughed when I saw that website, cause I just know people who don't know the math are furiously putting page numbers hoping to find one Wink. You'll likely witness the heat death of the universe before that happens.

Searching through that 'database' or so called database will only waste your time. The chances of you finding a collision is no better than if you just created a bunch of new addresses from your desktop client, the odds are astronomical.

That's true, it's a form of FUD that's been created to make users move towards ethereum. This year beginning onwards ethereum has grown in higher percentage, so now this too adds an additional user base to make bitcoin decrease in value and ETH reach higher.

I don't think you understand what the site actually is.  The site isn't a database (read the FAQ at the bottom), it's just a generator of all the possible private keys that could exist.

The point is to make people see just how many private keys could exist.  The first few might have some funds because of poorly created wallets or something, but go in 50 pages or so and see if any of the addresses listed in there have funds in them.  They don't, because it's impossibly difficult to search through that many possibilities even with the most powerful computers in the world.

I seriously don't think that if a guy comes up and says Blah! Blah! Blah! about bitcoins, people would get scared enough knowingly that he's an opponent and a dev of one of the most competing coins available in the markets over Bitcoins. He wants to doom Bitcoins and by dragging everyone's attention through this, Vitalik my boy, if you think that you are successful in getting it dumped the way people do with ETH, think again my boy. My two cents for ya!

If that twit post has no meaning or whatsoever and it is pure FUD...

Than this vitaliq dude is either mentally disabled or... retarded. Or both.

And if that's true how the hell he wrote eth code in the first place? I don't think microsoft would do business with a retard. He even met putin. If he is retarded, eth should fail like no-one ever did.

or is he telling the truth?  ;D

Truth? If yes, then I think at the first place, you should be worried about your own wallets being decrypted or got your private key as well as coins stolen.
That was a complete shitty post, because Bill Gates said that Bitcoin is better than currency, do you think a multi-billionaire like him is stupid enough to say that? Even if someone really tries hard with all their "super-powers" to find an address with something in it, it would not take years, but light-years to find one with some coins in it.

The most scary tweet that I have read is the tweet of one of my friend's friend that he says that he is s being attacked by the demons. And that he is not able to inject the happenings in hos life and he want to give up.

This is a typical stupid stunt to pull when you are jobless. I can't even expect a sane human in his or her right sense to believe this or get scared. Moreover, that dude need to take a chill pill.

Why would take a time reading that nonsense article.  We know bitcoins as far as they do.  And it is hard to believe that it would crash from that time.  And is the first and well known digital currency so it is very impossible.  Maybe they want is to have some dip on other cryptocurrency that is why they are making that hoax news.

This is very old story, I remember this from more then 1 and a half years ago. But even then there was explanation about this, so there is now, someone is just scaring noobs like in one comment from this tweet "Vitalik attempting to scare n00bs who don't understand how large the key space actually is. Kind of irresponsible to tweet without context." Great comment, before posting something make sure that you have all the facts, just posting something without any thinking and checking is irresponsible. Most funny part is this is not even new prank, someone repeated an old joke.

I do not think it makes no sense, whether it's accurate or not, reading it also gives me some useful information, do not underestimate it. In part, they give the right ideas.

Who from the forum tried to use this data in order to access the wallet?
Just for the sake of interest? Now if at least one person gets such access, then I'll start worrying about my coins

And Myetherwallet also replied in Vitalik's tweet that it can also be released like in the same case with Eth and here's their faq https://myetherwallet.groovehq.com/knowledge_base/topics/couldnt-everybody-put-in-random-private-keys-look-for-a-balance-and-send-to-their-own-address

I would say that this is a post that will make stupid people panic and I suggest to never try to search yours there because the admin or somewhat of that site might review the search log.

That's only very few of all the bitcoin wallets out there. To connect those keys to a bitcoin wallet is like finding a needle in a whole planet.

I heard directory.io before and i think its just a joke they don't even have a search bar to find your address you are just wasting your time if you are looking for your own private key there it takes too much time to find due to none search bar..
If this is true many people not trusting bitcoin to hold their money for a long time.. But i believe to the owner that he can keep this domain alive for a long time. .

As they say, talk is cheap

Whether Bill Gates is stupid or not is irrelevant since he may say anything he pleases, it won't matter a thing until he invests a few billion dollars in Bitcoin himself ("don't believe anything you hear"). So far he prefers dollars, not bitcoins, and I don't remember that Microsoft was accepting bitcoins as payment for their software. There have been various as well as numerous rumors, someone even claimed that he had seen some code which was assumed to work with Bitcoin, but the thing is Microsoft is not involved with Bitcoin in any meaningful way

Because of such tweets and so many beginners stop trusting bitcoin. But no one can provide evidence that this information is true. Most likely the author of the tweet just joked

Well according to my understanding there is no reality in this. I agree with you that this is just a fud and nothing else. How could it be possible? People still talking about the Bitcoin like this just to create a doubt wave so that they can get some benefits of it, But I don’t think it will really work because most of the people related to the Bitcoin knows about the truth and the strength of the Bitcoin.

Guys get real, take a look at the page number. That number is way to huge for  anyone to even imagine. The amount of addresses is enormous. The chance of finding an address with bitcoins in it is so damn small it's impossible to do it. Good luck finding an active address in that list.

well even if this was a real deal, don't you think that someone would automate that like making a scrypt or a program for that task to go smoother? But it's not.

seriously! this is such a shitty move by Vitalik Buterin!
meanwhile his project, ethereum, is filled with bugs and a terrible code if you ever bother to check it. it has already been exploited a couple of times and each time led to loss of millions of dollars ...

... and the tweets something the most fake thing in history of bitcoin! real mature of him.

Can I scare you even more?

There is a program called "Large Bitcoin Collider" that is described here (https://lbc.cryptoguru.org/) (and discussed here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1877935.0) at Bitcointalk) that is even better than directory.io and searches for collisions. It has already found a couple of addresses with balance!

PANIC!!!!!!!!

I've never seen large bitcoin collider nor anyone else document their attempts to break private keys in a way that is legitimate. At least not legitimate in my humble & amateur opinion.  :) They don't mention the number of keys they generate over a set period of time to give an indication of how long it might take to break a single key. If brute forcing keys were an issue, core might be forced implement a lockout if a number of transaction attempts failed due to bad keys. AFAIK that's not a difficult fix which could confirm its not an issue.

Exactly he is just trying to trap people typing their private key to search for their address. He is just trolling. That list is way too huge to find any address with bitcoin.

Could you explain what you mean by that?

That is, access to what exactly should they block and what transaction attempts do you refer to? I don't really know what you mean but that would obviously be against Bitcoin principles anyway. As I understand these efforts at cracking the private keys, you just download the whole blockchain to your computer, then run a key generating code and see if the public key you thus generated matches any in the blockchain. If it does and it has balance (the wallet it corresponds to), then you hit a jackpot. So what are you going to lockout here?
