Title: Hedge funds will include bitcoins ? Alternate to ETF ?
Post by: sana54210 on June 14, 2017, 05:55:34 PM
By 2013 end, I read an article in Yahoo news covering big corporate employees demand their salary in bitcoins. But after that I never got any update on that.

Just today I come across this amazing news, this is what I was expecting for years....
https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/goldman-sachs-hedge-fund-bitcoin

If this will be happening in real time, I guess we may forget about worrying on ETF disapproval. When asset management companies will be covering bitcoin as part of their portfolio, unofficially people may start trading bitcoins how they suppose to do with bitcoin ETFs !?

It is just hedge funds asking Goldman to cover Bitcoin. Hedge funds have almost no restrictions on what they can invest in.
A lot of funds have been investing in alternate assets like Bitcoin for years.

Then why such hype about the ETF, if the hedges funds can and are investing on Bitcoin?

Quote
“The market has come close (enough?) to reaching its extended (2.618) target for a 3rd of V-waves from the inception low at 3,134,” Sheba Jafari, the company’s chief technician, wrote, according to Tyler Durden, a financial writer noted in ZeroHedge, a financial news website. “It’s on track to forming a bearish key day reversal if today’s close settles below 2,749.”

OP, if Goldman Sachs enters the Bitcoin market today then that is bad news for every holder. According to the quote from the article, their chief technician thinks Bitcoin will be forming a "bearish key day reversal if today’s close settles below $2,749".

That only means that they might short sell BTC.

Because the ETF will allow a lot more retail and institutional investors to invest in Bitcoin. There are limited number of hedge funds and only a select few invest in crypto. ETF will be a game changer.

What do they mean by "covering"? It sounds like they mean they'll be giving analysis, not owning them though.

I doubt that many, or any, hedge funds will be owning any real amount of bitcoin in the near future. It is too volatile and risky. The potential reward is not high enough given the massive risk. Crypto is really a bad investment when you look at it objectively... there are far better options out there. People who manage hedge funds know this and are not going to jump into crypto yet. In time maybe they will, but I don't think they will yet.

That being said, I think getting hedge funds into crypto would be very helpful for it as a currency. This would encourage long term steady growth and hopefully reduce volatility. I discussed this in a post I wrote here: http://demoinvestor.com/articles/00000001

Because the ETF would have attracted pension fund money. The pension funds are huge, they dwarf the hedge funds - but they're only allowed to invest in regulated assets.
