Title: How many cores on a CPU is ideal for GPU mining?
Post by: pinjas on June 20, 2011, 11:55:27 AM
Hello,

I've noticed that a single instance of poclbm.exe seems to keep my a single CPU core pretty occupied.  I have two GPUs running currently and two instances of poclbm.exe staying at around 25% cpu usage each.  I have a 4 core CPU on this motherboard, and I will shortly place 2 more cards onto the motherboard.  It seems likely that this would max out the CPU all of the time.  Is it ideal to have a 1/1 cpu/gpu ratio?  If someone were to setup with 6 GPUs, would they want to have 6 cores?

Thanks for reading my questions.  Sorry if this has been asked previously, I searched without success.

I believe the high CPU usage is just a bug. Use the Affinity setting in the latest version of GUI Miner, or set the affinity manually, in order to assign all of the instances of poclbm to the same one core.

I have 4 GPUs and Sempron 140 is enough. 2 cores I think.

I have 3 GPU's (and one more pending to add) with a Sempron 140 locked to one core and its running fine and dandy.

My $0.02... You should have 1 core per GPU (and an extra core if you actually plan on using the computer while mining).

Let me guess: you are using Windows?
