Title: RX 580 8Gb vs 1060 6Gb
Post by: twicx on July 08, 2017, 09:12:46 PM
Hey all,
I'm ordering parts for my 1st rig next week. I was initially planning on going with 8 x 1060, but now I'm reconsidering to go with 8 x 580. Here's my considerations:

1. They're the same price at my local stockist
2. The 580 has a slightly higher hashrate, but slightly higher power consumption

Thoughts/opinions?

A 580 with good overclock goes up to 30-31 Mhash
A 1060 max goes up to 24.7-25 Mhash with overclock.

You are reconsidering it right. Do not make an error to go with the GTX 1060, they are not that good in mining anymore.

I just thought about this. Power consumption is negligible when the difference is less than 50watts. They key to mine as quickly as possible as things will only get tougher and ROI will take longer.

I have a mixed set of 1070 and 1060's. I'm considering swapping out the 1060's for 580's.

Noone talk about DAG?
Dag wont affect 1060, but will affect 580.
Ill go for 1060 6gb

that would make sense with 4GB, but not with 8GB 580....right?

if you are able to find the 580s in stock...I'd say go 580

I did consider this actually. Its due to hit 3gb around April, that's why I was looking at either the 6gb 1060 or the 8gb 580, so yeah, looks like the 580 is the better option.

Don't just limit yourself to mining Ethereum. There are allot of options out there and you need to research many different coins to determine which is the most profitable to mine now and going forward.

Yeah I've been doing that a lot too, but unfortunately, most of my focus has been on nvidia cards, which seem to hold up well with a number of other coins, particularly zcash. So the amd side is the next bit of research I have to do. I want to find a good backup plan for when ether goes to PoS next year.

1060 will use HALF of the power compared to 580....

prducing  90% of the hasrate

this guy thinks he can still afford the electricity costs with his mining profits more than 3 months from now  :D ;D :D ;D have you seen a difficulty chart lately?

Agreed, don't just look at ETH.

I'm mining XMR Monero with Strix RX 580 cards, and I'm getting around 600 - 650 H/sec

Which is not profitable compared to mining Ethereum with the same card. I wonder why you mine Monero when you clearly are going the wrong way and losing a good amount of money by not mining Ethereum.

In calculators there are the below data:

Monero Btc daily rate 0.00046121  when mining it with 0.10 USD k/watt and 180 watt energy cost.
Ethereum Btc daily rate 0.00095169  when mining it with same details as above is.

Clearly you are losing everyday almost 0.0005 in btc value. I think you need to switch to Ethereum or you are misusing the Strix RX 580.

I have both rigs sitting next to each other and stock, the 1060 is extremely efficient, quiet, stays around 55deg C per card..mild over clock from 19mh/s stock to 22mh/s..

Rx's - never modded them because I knew i'd resell eventually. But stock they do 24.5 mh/s, consume a little more power then the 1060's, and do run much warmer.. both great cards.

nvidia chipset ftw at this point.
