If the demand continues to pressure we will open for more slots than 50.

The production line is already very smooth for quantity shipping.

Title: Re: ASICMINER Fixed-Price Auction: 50 Block Erupter Blades
Post by: tkone on May 11, 2013, 06:09:25 AM
one of reasons demand is so high is because of limited supply, alot of resellers,
keep it in small quantities, and slowly put more auctions up, you will sell good and keep demand high, also can consider raising price a bit too for extra profits :)

friedcat, as the auctions on asics are ridiculous (BFL orders that may never ship going for $20,000+). you should be selling these for a min of 100btc!

I'd hate to think what would happen if BFL actually did start shipping MiniRigs ... coz that's like $750,000 per "MiniRig" :P

Yeah.  But how do you power a minirig lol.  I don't know a whole lot about the thermodynamics of the units, but if a BFL Jalapeno is 50w @ 5 GH/s, then 1500 GH/s = 12,000 watts..  You would need to rewire your house.  Some people bought more than one.

There is going to be headline news everywhere:  "BFL MiniRig owners getting doors busted in by police due to grow-op-level power consumption" lol.

Hmm - my Jalapeno is 32W (5.4GH/s) ... the few I have seen have all been in the 30s except that one that you are quoting that said it was 50W for some reason - my guess is he couldn't work out how to measure it :P

Anyway as I said "if BFL actually did start shipping" - who knows when that will be.

Yeah, I guess results may vary.  Still 9000 watts @ 32w per 5.4GH/s if 280 jalapeno's are in a minirig.

Didn't mean to help derail the thread though :P

Back to the blades!

Blades are ready to ship, or are they being made?
Whats the shipping date?
So, basically - can we still buy them after 50 is crossed and shipping date will be the same?

I've read most of the other two threads, and have a couple questions I didn't see asked in those.

1) For the rackmount shelf - how are these cooled?  Is it possible to put a few big fans in the back and suck airflow through?  I figure this is what you use in your datacenter deployments, and a few high airflow flans are more efficient than a bunch of small ones.  The fin orientation on the heatsinks seems to be non-ideal for this sort of chassis-based cooling setup however.  Basically, can these be cooled like other chassis-based equipment (blade servers, large chassis based switches, etc.) or is the idea to cool each blade individually?

2) The ethernet controller - are these 10/100?  100/1000?  I only ask because some switches won't link at 10mbps and I would like to be prepared with the proper equipment should you decide to increase the number of units available.

Thanks!

Well please make it vertically placed if you could. The chips are packaged via QFN, but not all the heat are absorbed by the PCB. The back
side will also become hot.

And if you have no mechanical setting to lift it and have to lay it on the supporting table, please make sure that there are no heat isolation
material under it.

Blades are ready to ship, or are they being made?
Whats the shipping date?
So, basically - can we still buy them after 50 is crossed and shipping date will be the same?
50 has already been crossed.

What are you waiting to place a bid, Kano? How much do you want to tell when BFL will ship?
Nah, the 50 have all already been sold - that's why it's turned into a discussion thread :)

We need your bid to keep pressing Friedcat to throws more slots.
I don't have 50BTC ... I don't even have 10BTC :P
Though, according to DHL I should have an asicminer USB some time soon - it made it to Hong Kong on Friday.

I just now saw they are going for 10.000 on ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=151041720632

Yeah, 5k up with 2 days left, and the guy has just brought another 20 in this auction
currently out of 20 bids, 17 with 0 or 1 feedback, also there's a risk  ::)

Quote
Wow 500GH/s for $250,000
I'd hate to think what would happen if BFL actually did start shipping MiniRigs ... coz that's like $750,000 per "MiniRig"

well when you put it that way, it's ludicrous  :D

If the demand continues to pressure we will open for more slots than 50.

The production line is already very smooth for quantity shipping.

so which is the final slot? If the slot is extended the shipment date is the same?

tnx

I'll take 3.

I really don't agree with this type of format, there are people who want to pay more and who aren't in the same time zone/sit refreshing the auction page who would have paid more.

The current pricing of 50 BTC fits well with the pricing of the previous blades and the USB miners coming out. I don't see a reason to change it. If anything, the total volumes of blades offered in this auction should be limited to meet bitfountains strategic internal demands.

That said, what we have here is a starving market with an exploding buying pressure - or resellers wanting to take a gamble. It makes sense to take advantage of the current situation meet the demand at this price point. 50 BTC is already a significant price point with a long-term projected ROI.

I'd like to vote to close the auction now. 1) its not an auction, 2) we need to verify of those first 50 who is actually going to pay, 3) we have plenty lined up for unofficial and unknown preorders, of which plenty more will not pay. We risk turning this into a farce if we're not careful.

Pretty simple to me.  Bid and don't pay, be dealt with like any other auction bidder that doesn't pay.  I believe that earns you a scammer tag if I'm not mistaken.

Either more than 50 units will be available, or not.  You're bidding on your place in a (possible) line, and just like any other auction you have no idea if you won until the auction closes.

Very damned simple - don't bid unless you are prepared to take delivery.  Why is this confusing?

People get spoilt. They have the opportunity to bid at a fixed price, and now they also want their unit guaranteed quick.

Some are being allowed to retract their bids, which isn't a given.

They should make their mind or earn a scammer tag. There is plenty of demand.

Because there is no way to verify who is following the rules until after everything has closed and things break.

Here's the initial payment addresses for the first 50 bidders. Please make your payment soon. For the rest of the pending bids, friedcat/me will announce the increase of blades if that's so.

Payment Addresses

They also serve as a transparent receipt:

Seems to be very unclear seeing as we don't know if 1) there is anything to win, 2) we actually won. For those of us in the UK converting from Fiat, its hard enough as it is.

Ah, I meant those whom friedcat has issued the addresses.  :)
If friedcat opens up new slots, those who are in the running will be asked to pay in probably 48 hours though.

10  -  but with the option to reduce or cancel if at the time these become available I don't have the btc to purchase.

.... if we're allowed to say that then why would't we all say 100? You should dismiss this bid.
Ah, I forgot to place his bid at the bottom - additional confirmed bids will turn up on top of his. Thanks for pointing that out.

I dont see how this works, ao by "bidding" on this item Im locked in to paying even if these boards go on sale in a month? I have to keep BTC around doing nothing just in case there is more blades to buy? Whats the point of having 50 units for sale and allowing people to keep bidding? Either its a waiting list (with no defined date of purchase should not be binding) or its an auction so only the first 50 people get a blade (the rest have to wait for another auction and bid on it then when it comes up), I dont think you can have it both ways.

If the list is binding, how long is it binding for? 1 day? 1 week? 1 month? forever?

Please clarify this so everyone knows what they are signing up for when bidding.

Well, as long as we (all the bidders below the first fifty units in the list) are just bidding in the hope to get something, and friedcat promised immediate shipping for the 50 units he sold in the auction, I guess he will announce something like "I can deliver another X units at once and the next Y ones are not ready before Z days" (of course, X can be 0 here in the worst case and Z a very long time, but I sure don't hope so). So as we bid out of line of the auction's rules, I suppose nobody will get grumpy or blacklist any bidder who says, that Z days is too long and that he wants to back out. At least I wouldn't do this if I just sold a whole batch of my product in less than one day and have enough customers in line for more than another two batches.

It would also be nice if Friedcat would reduce the prices of these device.
Avalons where selling for 75 BTC for 65GH/s. = 0.86 BTC per GH/s.

ASICMINER blades sell for 50 BTC for 10GH/s = 5 BTC per GH/s.

enormous demand speaks otherwise.

First blades, going for 75BTC some two-three weeks ago, made already about 11-12 BTC. Avalons ordered in february made exactly ZERO BTC.

You're getting the blades this week, whereas a batch 3 Avalon might take up to July/August at this rate.  ;)
Also, please do your market survey first - a batch 3 avalon preorder is going for around 150BTC shortly.

They are overpriced :)  But that's what the market is bearing, and they are the sole vendor shipping things out.  They also act professionally, or at least seem to so far, so they got my bitcoins.

In the end it was about "will these make money past the initial investment" and the math says yes.  120-160 day payback by my estimation, and then 3-6 months of making a healthy daily return before they get to be perhaps irrelevant to run.  Time will tell!

Interesting requirement to provide the shipping address via a PM.

That effectively gives bitcointalk.org your full identity rather than just the email address which was required at registration.

Or are you trying to get rid of obsolete hardware?

Friedcat's selling extra blades as ASICMiner is around 30% of the network hashrate. The blades are the current ones used in AM's hashing farm, and new from the factory.

I'll ask friedcat about this, but don't count on that.

Thanks, I would really appreciate if I could get them.

Check the first two auction threads (after they closed) there's a wealth of information, you do have to dig a little bit through the noise for it though.

You're in the row 38 https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Al1fvFT7Sd5bdGlXTFQtRllCM2E5Mk01VnRtN2tNeGc#gid=0

That address to the right is where you have to pay.

No, if I'm understanding it right, he's asking what's the deadline for payment, and if he's allowed to transfer the order to somebody else's.

Well, shit and fuck. Not two words I thought I'd use on getting hold of an ASIC mining device.

Being right at the end of the list I wasn't expecting to be eligible for a blade. So I've stuck too many fingers in too many pies, and temporarily run out of BTC with which to buy this.  :( But I WOULD kill anyone near and dear to me if it'd help get more BTC.

Friedcat and/or JohnK, I understand that as shipping is 'first-pay-first-served', I'll probably slip right down the queue, which is fair enough. But could you reassure me that you won't
a) boot me out of the queue altogether, and/or
b) get me a scammer tag?

I hope to be able to come up with the money within a week or so. I could make payment in dribbles if it'd help (like I could send 7 BTC right now).

You won't get a scammer tag for this because of how the 'auction' ended up, and the fact these are being sold continuously now rather than in batches. I was unfortunate enough to be only able to pay for 2 of my 3 due to bank issues and John said I wouldn't :)

Somewhere above it was suggested we would have 48 hours for payment, but worse case you can't do that and end up at the 'back' of the queue, its only 2-3 days.

I think you can. For one blade uses one PCI-E MOLEX and the second blade using another PCI-E MOLEX.

That's correct. It seems easier to cater it on a 1-1 basic as everyone has different numbers of blades, different current equipment, different local resources etc which make it very hard to explain it generically - without causing more confusion.

You'll have to be running the wiring overspec if you want to power 6 on 1 PSU. I'd recommend 2x3s.

Yes. I have put 2X120mm fans before heatsink, with full speed about 2500RPM.

Seem I need to make a rack and add more fans to cool this blade down.

Efficiency may depend on quality of your connection to server. But mostly it depends on how server managed by pool operator. Nothing to do with baled itself.

A little late to start to set it up. It works ok, though the efficiency is a little low, ~94.6%. Vertical mounting is difficult for me now.

You MUST find a way to stand it up, or put it over a mesh or on feet etc. The bottom of the mining board will get extremely hot, possibly hot enough to set the cardboard on fire.

Actually, is there any other reason for vertical mounting requirement than cooling problems?

Portugal.

I do not think it works, because they want to know how much it costs with shipping included.

I also won 12 blades plus 2 more when he decided to extend the auction.

I did not receive any confirmation if they were all shipped together or not.

I would really appreciate some help here...

They will call me in a couple of hours and i will not know what to say when they ask me for the paper trails.

I also purchased in the last auction and my blades arrived, I think the reason they are asking for papers is because he doesnt ship them in one package I received mine in individual boxes, hopefully the best comes out of the situation if you paid for 14 blades as that is quite a bit of money

just wanted to say thank you to friedcat!

to bad i am loosing around 700usd a day because of this problem...

for me dhl never again.

What do they want? I don't have email conversations for most of my purchases. What do they expect you to produce?

They want a comercial invoice, and proof of purchase i suppose.

I really cannot understand this, since everyone else got their blades without problems.

I think it's all about quantity of blades. Some countries' customs laws have limitations on how much boxes/parcels/goods at one time can be received by individual (not company). All above would be considered as a commercial batch and taxed in other way (hence the requirements of financial documents). You may definitely want to consult with customs broker (start with talking to DHL's broker, that's their money
eventually).

That may have played a part. It's 12 packages, looks a wee bit suspicious to have them declared for so cheap, especially when they're delivered by DHL Express. It's a massive statistical outlier.

I do not think its about the quantities, on one of the emails i received it seemed that if had a paypal payment to show them it would be no problem.

Buying cheap products and using dhl express should not be suspicious. There are lots of reasons we may need something really fast even if its cheap, more so if its not available on my country like the blades.

Maybe friedcat could call them and explain, or maybe i could call them and say that i payed with bitcoins, but since i cannot show any invoice i do not see how that would help.

And if i cannot supply the documents the merchandise will be sent back after 21 may....

That really s*cks. I think friedcat should be able to help you with the invoice.
It would be more difficult to provide proof of payment though...

Yes a signature is required. But it need not be you. Someone from your hosehold or messaging center (if you have ordered it to your work place)

A similar situation is with me was. I got a call from DHL, demanded proof of payment via PAYPALL. They say that Customs would not trust the Chinese. I said that I have no proof of payment. Then they asked to explain via email. I said I paid for virtual money, not real money. I said that virtual money in BiH is not worth anything, it is the gift  things. They said it should be sent by the procedure of gifts. On Monday, DHL blade carry on duty and say they will call me if there's a problem. Officer DHL we calculated CUSTOMS + tax + VAT + who knows what> 35 euro?! A declared price is $ 39. This just in BiH has. Future to pay $ 39 over PAYPALL or similarly.

Again: use getwork protocol on the blade (in your case it'll be 4500 then).
If this doesn't help, try just
mining_proxy.py -o mint.bitminter.com -p 3333
and on the blade:
192.168.1.213 with port 8332

Ehhhhh :/

Now I had a problem with the configuration of the device. I did hardware reset the device. After connecting to the router, the green LED is not blinking ! After a few seconds, the internet stops working on my laptop and others computers. Once again, I disconnected BE and internet connection is working. I suspect that the BE sends a lot of packets and blocks traffic of the router.

What I can do ? :(

While connecting blade directly to PC you may need cross-Ethernet cable, I'm stepped onto this.
Also try to check the patch cord or try another.

Chances of a broken ethernet module taking down your whole network are nearly zero.

Out of curiosity, what is your default gateway set to on your network?

Dumb question  :P - are you plugging your blade into your router or your PC? From reading your posts I was thinking that the blade won't be able to see the gateway if it's plugged into your PC/laptop. If the blade can't see the gateway it won't be able to talk to your pool.

If you haven't tried it already do a reset then plug the blade into your router using a bog-standard ethernet cable. If you've tried this already sorry for wasting your time. :)

You may need to manually set the blade's settings so that it can see the router. With the blade not connected to the network also check that nothing is using the IP address 192.168.1.254 (if there is then assign the blade another address that is free).

Your network not working as soon as the blade is plugged in to me sounds like a network misconfiguration error.

Good luck.

Software may be damaged/buggy... i don't know... :/

Both LED on ethernet module are solid light, yellow and green.

I followed once again procedure:
I reset device once again. Checked with another Ethernet cable. Checked with another router. Connected directly with my PC (cross and normal cable).
Each time both LED are solid.

IP 192.168.1.254 is free on my router / PC. Why blade block internet traffic ? It shouldn't.

Yeah, good idea WT. Sztef, draw us a nice picture of your blade, PC and router, with IP address, gateway and netmask details and how they are connected (whatever the instructions from AM suggest would be the best starting point).

I don't know why the BE blocks internet traffic ... :/

I had this issue in Batch 2, I fiddled with some QOS service settings and I was good to go.

The multimeter's positive probe should be attached in between the capacitor pairs and the 2R2 inductors when tuning the voltage.

Can someone point me exactly to which component probe should be attached  ???

Yes but I would also get some fans (1 or 2 180mm fans would work well), the stock fan is not enough if you want to overclock.

It's more important to have airflow against the chip side of the PCB, than the heatsink side I've found.

Heatsink I guess can radiate heat a lot better, the chips cannot.

Chips do transfer the heat to the heatsink, its by design AFAIK.

Blades don't lie directly on the box, and they are not even hot. Cooling by 120mm ,200CFM fan and temp in room 18°C.

It was prioritizing traffic via MAC address to the blade, and the proxies, but it was a temporary fix at best. My blade is puttering along on three cylinders so it's not a problem anymore.

has anyone run into efficiency issues? not sure if it's the way my local network is setup (blades > dd-wrt > mining_proxy on my pc > hma vpn > bitminter)  so when i mine with 2 erupters the 2nd one starts losing its efficiency and hovers around 20-40%... tried various pools same thing... also sometimes i will see xxx instead of OOOO so i don't know if it's the power issue (530w true power) but both connected separately since my PSU is modular... although the 2nd blade also powers my 4 120mm fans... could that affect power flow to the blade?

Network setup: 2 blades and my PC rig connected via dd-wrt , the pc runs mining_proxy and goes out via HMA vpn
1st blade: hashrate is as expected 11+ to 13 with high clock
2nd blade: hashrate is around 8000-9000mhs with 20-40% efficiency with high clock...

My blade is in hands of police now, I am accused for smuggling... They dont belive it is worth 39$, and everything is DHL fault, since I ofered to pay more when blade arrived, and they never called me to tell me problem exist. So till this is over, I advice ppl from former Yugoslavia (Serbia-my country, Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia and Montenegro) to order with slower but more reliable service, skip DHL, or wait till autorities decide if I am smugler and what penalties should I pay. I was assured from few ppl I know on customs I shall have no problems and that is only rotine, but I have in my hands copy of official document where it says: "accused for smuggling..." etc etc. When it is over I shall write full report here on forum, as a guide to ppl in my surrounding.
of course it depends on country, and what kind of relationship DHL has with custom in this country. In my case DHL cleared my 20 blades in 2 hours. delivered in 4 days.

one observation I want to share. I have one blade from first auction. I overclocked it myself with 1.24v  today after 20h work it gives

16,072.10 MH/s   776384 (99.41%)

heating more, but with efficient cooling all tip top.

it maybe incorrect value, as it is hash calculated by  pool, anyway I see higher hash rate from this blade all the time not less then 14ghs. from15blades I'm getting around 182.20 GH/s some blades run on high and few on low. I does no have enough power back up to run all blades on high.

set up is same of other's. blades in PVC pipes rake, cooled by AC and strong centrifugal type blower. One blower cooling 8 blades.

i wouldn't trust those numbers... i experienced something like that without doing any oc while having an issue with one my erupters... i once saw it hitting 19gh with low efficiency while bitminter would show just 4-5gh constantly so i would guess it's either firmware or unstable power flow in my case. i even switched power cables with the other blade and it encountered the same symptom on the other blade... also you may want to consult friedcat before you damage the chips...

My blade is in Customs (Ireland) and they are looking for a proof of purchase. How am I supposed to handle this? I PM'd friedcat yesterday but got no reply. Others who got their blades must have encountered this. Do you get an invoice from friedcat or tell them you payed in Bitcoin?

Most customs authorities operate the same way around the world, if they don't believe the customs declaration they ask for proof of purchase. I have gotten stuff from China before and been asked for proof of purchase but I had a paypal receipt to show, I have zilch to show for the blade. Any advice would be great because I am quite worried right now.

Well, I am sure it is not a heating/cooling problem. I use 3x 12mm fans, two direct on the heatsink and one blowing air from aside for a good airflow. The heatsink stays cool and the blade shows a nice hasrate and efficiency. Could be a power issue... ???   That idea I hardly believe, I use a proper PSU (500W). Or am I wrong?

Which power lines from the PSU are you using?  A single molex line might have problems (since those usually run a harddrive or cdrom + might be lower gauge). Does your power supply have one of the 6 pin video card connectors? You should try using both of the + and - terminals if you haven't already.

The blade also restarts if it is not getting work from the proxy. How are you connected to the network and what is the latency when you ping the blade from your machine.?

I had this problem when i was using a faulty Ethernet cable until i brought a new one.!

This is not a single issue with BE blades and customs. IMHO friedcat might consider specifying more reasonable (from customs p.o.v.) value around $129.

The blade also restarts if it is not getting work from the proxy. How are you connected to the network and what is the latency when you ping the blade from your machine.?

I had this problem when i was using a faulty Ethernet cable until i brought a new one.!

- Well I run the stratum mining proxy of Slush in windows. The DOS-box look fine to me: it is receiving get-work and sending proof-of-work. And also I setupped a backup get-work server in case when the local proxy is down.

PING Results:

10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 2.459/9.687/21.463/7.679 ms

Pinging seems ok, maybe slightly high for a local network. I can't check the cable right now, because I don't have a spare one. It will be the first thing I will do, if the 6-pins operation doesn't bring the solution to this problem.

They have a invoice for 39 attached to the package.. It should be inside that transparent pouch where DHl puts the waybill..
Let the DHL team know about it.!

The problem is they don't believe the price. Unless the invoice you mention shows a higher value than $39 and details how much for the item and how much for the shipping, it's not going to fly with them. I'll mention it to DHL the next time I contact them but based on past experience I doubt they will accept it. Any idea what might happen if I can't produce a proof of purchase? Do they put their own value on it or maybe just destroy the item  :(

This is not a single issue with BE blades and customs. IMHO friedcat might consider specifying more reasonable (from customs p.o.v.) value around $129.
Yes I agree. I think the value should have been put above $150 to be believable. Customs know that International shipping is not cheap, particularly express.

Google translator:

If you are not a business, you can lose your proof of payment. The European Union does not have the duty of keeping such documents. You write that you ordered the toy example that generates random numbers to play Warhammer and fellows from China I bought you asking for shipping to Ireland. You do not have proof of purchase, because there you bought. The device is used for your fun, consisting of PCB + heatsink and is worth about $ 40. Besides asking for fast shipping, because you are downhill fans of Warhammer and the generator is you absolutely necessary.
 :)

This is not the solution. Customs has asked me for proof of payment via PAYPALL and the like. And the price of $ 1000 is not adequate proof. The solution is a $ 39 payment via PayPal. Customs show pictures PayPal orders and customs would accept as adequate proof of payment. It is definitely a solution.

What if I've paid not via PayPal?

It is important to me personally we can prove that we paid $ 39. Customs has asked of me, and I quote DHL worker "proof of payment via PayPal or something." They asked me to show them my account where they can see that I paid $ 39. They say it is the only valid proof of payment.

Maybe the solution is the price of 1 USD + 49 BTC?
We have proof of payment for 1 USD and customs are happy :)

Why friedcat not responding?
I ordered another Block Erupter Blade, since I paid then I have no contact with friedcat... 2 days...

     Good idea. I would suggest 49.5 BTC + $ 39.

lol then they charge you 20% vat on that...  no...

try looking up sample invoices online, fill it out with $39 and the details of the company in china or whatever and send it to them

don't use too low values - customs won't believe that will ask for a payment statement.
if they want a statement for the payment and you have paid in bitcoins only...wish you good luck explaining them your bitcoin payment. as statement not only paypal statements could be used. they just want a statement for a money transfer in FIAT (paypal, skrill, bank account,...).

My blade restarted after 3 days' continous mining.
I'm not sure if there are any problems with it. Hope it is ok.

restart after 1 day mining in BTC Guild. last time it was mining in slush pool.

what price to declare is tricky question. what is OK for one country can be overpay for another, and they cant declare to Chines custom different value for same kind of goods each time they ship. I think it is not a price what trigger custom attention, but description of good  "BE PCB board" maybe it suits friedcat for passing Chinese custom, but may sound puzzling for Wester customs. If description of goods will be for example as "Computer parts/components" that may help to pass custom with better success

I'd vote for 'computer parts', it worked for me many times.

I've been looking through the threads about the Block Erupter Blade ASIC boards and can't seem to find a definite answer.

Do they require fans on both sides of the ASIC board, are there ASICs on both sides?  Is there a heatsink on both sides?

Jesus, whats with all the thread necros lately?

ASICs are located on one side of the board, heatsink is on the other side. May seem weird, but because of how the chip is packaged, it will dissipate more heat through the PCB and vias than through the plastic coating on the chip. Active cooling is mandatory, but only heatsink side.
