Title: [Cases] What do you keep your coins in?
Post by: teeGUMES on July 19, 2017, 10:16:57 AM
I'm quite curious as to what you all keep your coins in? I know a lot of people may keep their coins in safety deposit boxes, but for the few that you keep at home or nearby what do you prefer to keep them in?

I use these (first time putting up a picture, probably wont work)

My coins are laid down facing up, its nice because you can slot them depending on the size of the coin.

I'd recommend using a book safe. (That's what I do)
They only cost $10-15. :)

Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Ohuhu-Dictionary-Diversion-Book-Combination/dp/B01DKINC4E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1500462916&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=Book+safe&psc=1

I am storing my coins in a fire-proof safe. I don't really display them :/. I am getting a display case made for my Kialara 'To The Moon' Suite though.

Wanted to add a little preview of a "coin mining case" I've been working on, the final prototype went together tonight.  :)

Looks more like a 2oz to me. Pretty cool though. Storing minted seats in this case is like having an energy free antminer that really mines BTC!

Thanks the kind words everyone and yes, it's a 2oz as Og identified.  I'm excited that prototyping is nearly complete and the final announcement/insert designs should be coming in the next month or so.   :P

The prototype in the photo has the "Basic" insert (1oz, 2oz, & ANACS holder) and there are ~20 different inserts designed for different storage configurations.  The inserts are removable so you aren't stuck with the same box configuration if you'd like to change it in the future or even remove the insert so it's an empty box.

I typically resell most of mine, so I just use the slotted cardboard boxes that ANACS ships them back in! :D  (Also, I'm cheap, so I don't care about expensive cases). My favorite coins get special treatment in other custom boxes and such though! :P

And yes, cool stuff Digi, keep it up, looking forward to your release(s). ;D

I use the following boxes that I bought from Amazon. The one on the right is my display case, the rest is just storage.

It looks really cool, but not handy when it comes to storing/displaying. :|

I huck all my physical bits and bytes in a traditional steel bucket. Then I put that bucket in my gun safe. Then I stab bitches that wander too close to my gun safe.  ;)

I've got a collection of various 39mm rounds in airtites.  Can anyone recommend a case made for 1oz silver rounds in airtites that works well?

A safe. A fire proof safe.

Somewhat off / on topic, do you submit your coins to the insurance company? I'm assuming they'd be more apt to insure if stored securely.

In the US a homeowner's policy does not cover coins or bullion.  You can get a rider added to your policy to specifically cover your collection however you need to provide documentation of the purchases (invoices) which is somewhat difficult with coins acquired here.  My insurance guy didn't accept "I paid 1.7 btc, the equivalent of 7000 usd today, to an Internet person named suckmyballz6969 for this 1 ounce of silver.  You can see here in my Private messages with him/her"

Probably depends on your agent.  I went into my agent's office and told them I was 90% sure I was going to burn my house down mining Bitcoin and I wanted to make sure EVERYTHING was covered.  As long as I was willing to pay the costs, they were willing to insure whatever I wanted.  I didn't go into insuring Bitcoin though, just insuring precious metals/miners.

Fire proof safe is a bit of a necessity, but I have a bunch of random 1oz coins in airtites stacked up in my safes.  I think something like this might be what I was looking for:
http://www.air-tites.com/storage-tube-coin-holders.htm#.WZyOtq2ZPMU

Given the value of physical crypto coins, I no longer recommend people store them at a safe in their home.  Ironically, the value has gotten to the point where people might be wise to....trust banks to keep their coins safe in safety deposit boxes.  :'(  I feel dirty even typing it.

I opened a small safe deposit box at a nearby bank branch for my physical coins. Pretty handy too as someone rifled through my stuff last year and didn't make it off with anything of value.

I put my ANACS slabs into Lighthouse wooden display cases

With my poor-man's peeled 5B and 25B..

and the coins in 2" square Lighthouse quadrum holders put inside their wooden display cases.

Then that stuff is put in a vault.

One good thing about these coins i guess.  People would rather steal a $50 gold chain then a loaded casascius coin.  ;D

Those lighthouse wooden display cases are a thing of beauty.  If only they didn't have such a large footprint.

A safe. A fire proof safe.

I've read that storing coins in a fireproof safe is not always a good idea.

This guy says he had his collection stored in a SentrySafe fireproof safe, and some time later found severe damage:

A safe isn't a replacement for airtites.  Always keep your coins in airtites if you want to keep them clean looking.  I even wrap my bars in saran wrap or place them in ziploc bags when storing them.

Scary stuff.  I had no idea that those safes would cause damage like that.
