Title: is it worth installing a 6850 into my mining rig?
Post by: hotwired007 on May 13, 2013, 04:49:09 PM
Hi guys, im still running a 5850 and 5870 mining rig - 0.04 PPS (so far mined 12 BTC off the whole system)

i ahve a 6850 sitting doing nothing atm, is it worth the hassle of buy 3 PCIe risers and customising my case to suspend the GFX cards for the extra 200-220 Mhashes?

i was running the card in a separate PC for mining LTC but now my office gets way to hot running two mining rigs, im guessing that a third card wouldnt really help with the heat anyway - its not hot in my case - both cards are around 65-75 degrees all day.

I would say yes. Any extra hashing power you can throw at it is worth it.  You already own the card so its not like you are adding the investment of buying the card, shipping, etc.  If you are just BTC mining with it, you wont even need powered risers (but will if you decide to do LTC), and non-powered risers are dirt cheap.  So really the only investment you will have is your time as you find a way to suspend your card(s) in your case, keep them cool, and do all the tweaks to get optimal performance and stability.

Simple:

Calculate the Cost
Calculate the Hashrate
Calculate the Money You would Make
Calculate the Difficulty Increase
Calculate Electricity Cost

See if you would make money.

couldn't agree more ... but I think he has "free electricity" as he runs that in "office" :)

Exactly.  And since that would be the biggest cost factor, besides hardware (which he already has, and what he needs to get it cheap), then I would say yes, it would be worth it.  Or at least, it wouldnt hurt.

I wish it was 'free' electricity - its my home office ;)

I do plan on switching to LTC once i have an ASIC or FPGA miner - currently i'm mining at a 40-50% profit margin per bitcoin - although i need to pay for the hardware that i bought originally to mine. (PSU and extra GPU)

At the moment my PC is built like a high end gaming rig with lots of airflow (220mm fan over GPUs) - my motherboard has 4 PCIe 16x headers but they are next to each other. so basically 2 are hiding under one of my GPUs.

Powered risers from hong kong are about 5.99 and the standard ones are are 2.99.

What's the rating of your PSU? You will need something approaching 800W. I alway use a 1250W PSU for 3 card GPU rigs. Power problems cause all sorts of crap which will waste your time!

i have a corsair 850w PSU and with both cards at max it draws 385w

Long term you'd be better with a 7950 if you have the cash to invest. It uses less power so cheaper electricity bills.

Sorry I was talking about GPUs not PSU! AMD 7950 is probably the best mining card on the market.

I wish i had a spare £250 available!

The whole reason i started mining was that i saw an opportunity to make some money - literally ;)

I have a 6870 and it mines 240MHs BTC  on Bitminter, a 6850 will give you a bit less   ;D

I would say Yes it's worth the trouble if you have place for the risers.

You will make a profit mining LiteCoin this setup. Electricity costs will be about £1 per day.

I believe you would make about $70 over the economic life of the card (about 5 months).
