Police arrest 20 Panchayat members who ordered 'revenge rape' in Multan

A search operation is underway to arrest the members of a panchayat (village council) who fled after ordering a man to rape a 16-year-old girl, police said on Wednesday.

According to SHO Malik Rashid, the search operation began after two cases were registered against the members of the council at a police station inside the Violence Against Women centre in Multan.

The council, comprising at least 40 men, was convened in Muzaffarabad's Rajpur area after a 12-year-old girl, F*, was raped by a man while cutting grass in a field on July 16, reads the First Information Report (FIR) filed at the police station.

On July 18, the panchayat ordered F's brother to rape 17-year-old N*, the sister of the accused. According to the police, N was dragged to the area where the panchayat was convened and was raped before the men and her parents.

After the incident, the parents of N filed an FIR on July 20, while a second FIR was filed on July 24 by F's family, who had initially wished to keep the matter quiet.

After the cases were registered, the police started investigations and arrested 20 of the council's members, including the head of the panchayat who gave the order. Search operations for the remaining men are underway.

What a horrible, horrible place for girls.  >:( The family of the guy who raped the girl also filed a case? Against whom though? How much legal authority does this panchayat have anyway? What if the brother refused to rape the girl of the man accused to rape his sister, would they have found another way to enact their "ruling"?

It's really terrible that in this day and age, barbaric deeds like this are being committed.

Well, the thing is that no one is going to stop it from happening, the village council, in this case, is a government but also a class of people that control the social hierarchy where they are. So it's impossible to go against them and we wouldn't see the nature of someone betraying them from their ruling.

Pretty horrible ruling though, I don't see how people can think the eye for an eye type thing works in practice, as this is just horrible to put someone's sister towards this.

But I guess we'll see if this is a part in stopping it, hopefully, it does.

This crime was committed in full view of everyone with extreme cruelty. To stop such crimes in the future, I propose to bring them to the same area where they raped the girl and shot in front of everyone. Then others will think what they are doing. These are not people and they cannot live among people.

I am hoping that these men are raped as well, The Hammurabi code should be used here in this ruling to bring justice to the victim, These men should be raped by a horse and it should be supervised by everyone. This crime does not deserve prison sentence but rather a tit for tat judgement.

This is really pathetic. Once again proves that Pakistan and Islam are a curse to the world. Why should a girl be raped for the crimes of her brother? These people simply have no shame. She was a kid. Not even an adult.

This is just despicable. As with the first case you mentioned, the rape victims's brother is still a suspect in the rape of another girl. I doubt these flea-infested old men have access to a forensics lab. Looks like it's still better living in a large city despite the pollution, seems the countryside there is ruled by these jerks.

But they were sent to prison still, meaning their powers still have limit. So even if they say that the penalty they want is to have someone raped, if it's a crime in the country, then they'd still have to pay for that.

Hopefully, as more and more of these case of abuse make it to the limelight, the more moderate segment of Pakistani society would show outrage. It could be their mother, sister, and daughters that would end up getting this treatment just because of an alleged crime.

Sigh. Looks like living in an urban setting don't automatically make people urbane.

I am not surprised. These sort of things usually happen in Pakistan and no one cares about them. Ever heard about the Mukhtaran Bibi rape incident? In that incident also, the accused were acquitted.

There is no moderate segment within the Pakistani society. It is a heavily male dominated society, where rape victims are considered as outcasts. The rapists are never punished. The Mukhtaran Bibi rape incident is a prime example. None of the accused in that case were punished.

This is a terrible place in which they can do this to girls. Such rapists need to publicly cut off their genitals and deprive them of freedom so that in the future no one would think of such a thing.

Who will do it for them if such crimes are commonplace. Sometimes I do think that everything that you can think the worst in people gathered in Muslims. Horrible thing to say, but I do not believe in people. For me they are beasts that must live only in the zoo.

this is more of traditional thing then religion.India and Pakistan has both this ill tradition .

What should i say i  >:( actually its the course of illiteracy if they were well educated and hopefully they could able to think the result what are they having now and it is not possible to change everyone mind unless we made them aware of those but i must say without having any education they were suppose to know this is not good for that reason they should be given strict punishment that no one will repeat it ...

In India also, such customs are prevalent (especially in the cow belt states such as Haryana and Uttar Pradesh). But such instances are very rare. At least in India, there is a chance that the perpetrators will be punished. But in this case, the possibility of any such thing happening is really remote.
