depends on what you are looking at it for. certain coins are good for trading but some have some practical sense or purpose. so it really depends on what you are looking for as to whether their is a suitable altcoin for you to fancy.

You are missing byteball and IOTA
It has to be innovative and has to have a good team which is developing it

Does anyone really believe in Byteball or is everyone just waiting until the Airdrops are complete and then dumping it all?

A good altcoin needs:
Real world features that meet real world needs, that don't exist on any other network, or are implemented in a better way.

These features should be
Network features - what can you do with the system, and how do you do it
Community features - how to connect users of the system
Governance features - how to manage the growth of the system
Gateway features - how to connect this system with other systems

Blockchains are a certain type of Database, your wallet is just a way of interfacing and altering the database. So the question is, what types of efficiencies can be drawn out of this new type of database/network? There is already a growing array of uses. Currency (bitcoin, litecoin, dash) blockchains are over saturated. very rarely does a new interesting one come out. To grow an interesting currency chain, it really needs to focus on usability and user features. Smartcontract chains are also pretty over saturated (ETHEREUM, NEM, NEO) but are much less developed, as they are a much more complicated system (which is why there is a lot of FUD around ethereum). There are APP coins like SIA which is about decentralized distributed cloud storage.

There are many very interesting altcoins, at this point all advantages with bitcoin have to do with the network effect (biggest userbase, most well known, most applications built around it) otherwise it is the most outdated blockchain of any value. It is a very slow network, both in operation, and in how it upgrades (upgrading slowly is part of it's security however).

I further recommend ETH because prices tend to be stable from others, I myself in addition to BTC also investing in ETH, but it can also be in XMR. It's in my opinion :)

A good altcoin would be one with increasing price and growth in the project development. It need not to be competing the bitcoin really but it needs to be stable in the market and must hold the position in terms of value above optimum price. Altcoin can be pumped and dumped but the good coin should be the one who won't come in the list of such behaviour.

It needs an active development team, an active project that backs it up and above all an active and supporting community. Great technical background and effort is also a very good sign. i like Steem, Nxt, GNT, ETC, Block, Siacoin.

I think a really good altcoin is like no issue of negative existance and the price is increasing in the point that its in the same level of bitcoin.
For me the best altcoins for now is waves and eth.

Currently best altcoins right now are Ethereum, Waves and Litecoin. Eth and Waves still have long term gain potentials. Litecoin is just safe one.

I think you have missed the time transactions take to proceed (they should be instant) and safety of the code (no problems of the kind which we see ethereum has).
And yet I think that even a coin having everything quite perfect may stay being unnoticed and worth nothing. And it may stay this way forever. A coin has to be advertised somehow, so that someone decides to build, say, a casino operating only with it. Then people might realize it is indeed better than anything they've seen and maybe the coin will have a chance to be noticed. I think the winning coins are not the best ones.

This thread is useless, everyone says his own portfolio, I wouldn't even read comments in this thread. There are few coins that can give you huge profit in the long term and lots of coins that can give you a huge loss.

It depends on you if you're going for a long term investment and have a large money for investment you should buy ethereum.  :-X
But if you don't have large amount to invest you can choose altcoint that ranges from 10000 satoshis and below you such as xrp etc.  :-X

If you want to check trading status e.t.c i think you can use this https://coincap.io/ to help you. :-X

i think every people have different good altcoin in their perception because i think they will selected coins from reading in many sources. but i think i have my list like litecoin, ethereum, rep, xrp, dgb, nxt and i think i have another coin. i think the good altcoin will help us to make much of bitcoin if we can sell in high price beside that the good altcoin have a good project too and have a solid teams that giving support for the coins.

I think dogecoin is good one. It has quite great community support. Stratis looks good as well.
My personal risky choice is siacoin. Its' development process is very active.

Having made a nice profit holding my Alts for the past year here is what I would suggest:

Neo/Antshares - China's Ethereum and bound to be a triple digit coin in the future
Golem - Great project, great team and established
OmiseGo - take a look at this all-star team and tell me it wont succeed. This will be at $10 before the end of the year.

A few others:

SNT, Cloak, ARK, Startis, Siacoin

If you were to diversify your portfolio with a few of these you should be in good shape. Remember, these are all long term coins so Id suggest buyin now and holding for a few months. You wont be sorry!

All type of altcoin should need development and growth in order for it to progress but it much need the support and funds first before it happens in reality. Because if you will set a new ICO on the market you should need partial funds for you to set a really good project that have a future in the marjet and worth investing for, it is for the investor to have reason on investing on a specific program. And the best way to have a good altcoin personally you should need to support it and used in in the platform of trading so that development and and growth will take place through it.

Waves - 100%, Siacoin, Steem, Stratis!

And it might be worth to take a look at a few low marketcap coins with good potential - Lunyr (wikipedia on blockchain),
Myst (decentralized VPN service), LBRY (decentralized content distribution platform), Elastic/XEL (Golem competitor)

A good altcoin must be based on the criteria of the management team, the technology, the product and the roadmap as well as the promotion strategy.
There is now a best altcoin on the market that is precisely the ETH with the smart contract technology used by ICO projects to develop the technology for their products.

After Ethereum is Waves, this is altcoin I very interesting about the target and roadmap of it. Decentralization Exchange, best issue for most trader interested, special the accident of BTC-e in last months make the project Waves popular than with more trader.

Good alt coins still exist. Unlike those shitty pump-dump scam coins there are coins which are a consistent community with active developers. I personally prefer Ethereum, Litecoin, Monero and Waves.

Enumerated above were consistent on performing their tasks well and proves their uae even before, they are mostly used in having ICOs and there are effective too hold. Having ETH and Waves now is a must if we wants to gain more in investing in ICO.

It depends on how long will you hold it before you trade it,
There are coins that are just for a short trade and there are also coins that are good for a long term.
