Title: safe temperatures for a 1080ti rig
Post by: droghtak on August 04, 2017, 03:22:18 PM
Hi,
I have a rig with 6 1080ti (4 aorus and 2 aourus xtreme).

I have the fans configured at 100% and temperature limit at 70C
I have been reading around and I think I could push the temps at least to 75C or even 80C being safe, some users say that they have been mining for years with higher temps.

what do you think? is this safe for mining 24/7? I have an extended warranty from Gigabyte but I dont want to burn GPUs, RMA can be a lot of time...

The thermal max for the card is 94c, you should be fine up to 80c but I would shoot for no higher than 75c for longevity.

Hi,

i have a Rig with 3x ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1080TI AMP and 3x GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1080TI Gaming OC since 4 months and i have my temp limits @ 80C and i can see some throttling since summer.
I don't like overhead my cards to make sure the reselling are able in 12-18 month's.
On other threats i see somebody heat the cards up to 90C without issues but i think the cards will die in some months.

I've got all mine at a comfortable 74~ degrees and 75% fan

The thermal max is not for 0-24h use. In fact these cards start to throttle at 84°C which is still not what you want 0-24.

You also can't set a thermal limit on them thanks to GPU Boost 3... At least I couldn't with whatever I tried. Try setting it to 60°C and see if it throttles down to around it. Hint: it won't.

I have the same cards but I only run them at 60% TDP (180 watts) and I do have like 12 cm of space in between them. But they're never go beyond 70°C even if the air tempreture is over 40°C. They're mostly in the 60's.

Up to 75 C is an acceptable temperature to keep the cards at, but you are going to wear out the fans very quickly keeping them at 100%. Better to buy a $20 box fan and place it on top of the cards. It creates air flow around the cards and lowers the temp, so you don't need to run the card fans very high.

are you sure that setting the fans at 100% will wear out quickly? I have read that it should not affect to fans lifespan

I have to adequate my cooling, right now I have an open window and established a natural air flow between another open window. But I think I will try using a fan to push the air through the window

Yes, a box fan is a must have in summer.
attached a quick shot of my 1080ti rig to figure out.

I have set the max temp to 80C and we have outdoor 38C.
The cards itself are oc with 100 core and 300 mem by stable 720 sols

These cards finnally have double ball bearing fans. They should last a very long time, unlike previous Gigabyte cards.

I had several 970 and 1070 G1 Gaming cards and they all had crappy sleeve bearing fans that mostly died in about 6 months on the 1070s and about a year and a half on the 970s. Yeah, the 1070s had the worse fans.

Really your fine if you want to run them up to 80C safely, but would not be recommended. recommend leaving the cards at 60-75% fan speed and buying a small fan to circulate the air. No need for a huge box fan like posted before, it will be a waste in the end. This is the fan i use, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001R1Q2C6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 , 1 per 8 GPU System. With fan speeds between 60-75% the temperature does not pass 65C. The fan is quiet and works great.

Really! As friends say on this thread that 80oC is perfectly normal for this graphics card.
And I think 80oC will not quickly damage the graphics card 1080ti.

80 ° from 1 to 4 hours(gaming) of use per day is tolerable, now 80 ° 24 hours a day ...

thanks guys for all the input, really appreciated.

Regulater: where do you put the fan? I guess you put it just above the rig

BTW I've been thinking about enclosing the rig in a case (40x40x60 cm), so it would be 0.096m3, then use a 150mm extractor (like this https://www.amazon.es/Extractor-l%C3%ADnea-Helicoidal-Vents-150mm/dp/B005GK3WVI/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1501873543&sr=1-1), the case would have two holes, one on one side and the other in the opposite side connected to a tube which would end in the extractor, on a window. So if dont fail at the maths, this fan could renew the air inside the box like 1 time per second, throwing the heat through the window. Is this correct? I really dont know this stuff ...

just fyi - when building your rig, hang your gpus vertically, it makes huge diffence vs when cards are vertically.

No one really knows   the safe max since no one has run one for say 9 months.

Most cards don't like running at 80c nonstop for months.

But some have done this for me.

I even ran a card at 90c for 5 months then gave it to a friend he had it for a year then sold it on eBay.

I would never run cards over 80c and with 100% fans.

I shoot for  75c or less using 75% fans

And Aorus 1080ti Extreme have 4 years of extended warranty, I'm guessing regular Aorus as well, so i wouldn't worry so much. Worst case scenario you have few weeks downtime. They do drop in speed when 84C+

Hello, I'm looking for input regarding 1080Ti temps. I have 7 cards running ZEC via SMOS. Seems that some cards can run 15c cooler than others. The highest is 63c and the lowest at times 47c. I don't have an onboard OS just using SMOS on a usb. I haven't updated the cards and SMOS and my bios both have updates. I'm guessing that cards can come off the line with different averages but 15c seems a little much. Funny thing, they are right next to each other in the rig. One hot, one cool. The problem for me is when I push the settings I'm limited by the hottest one. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.
