What are the best bitcoin desktop wallets? And also other wallets that include a number of altcoins goo?

best solution is a wallet for each coin. So one for bitcon, one for ethereum etc etc...
Personally I didn't trust multi coin wallet, but there are few official option.
about btc the best desktop light wallet is electrum.

I like Exodus for a number of altcoins, it's very easy to handle. But I wouldn't use it for BTC since the transaction fees are apparantly very high. For BTC I also recommend Electrum.

Electrum is the wallet mostly recommended for BTC on a desktop. For multi coin wallets, Exodus has a nice GUI, but as mentioned, the fees to send BTC can be high. I personally like Jaxx.io for a multi wallet since they give three options for sending speed when it comes to BTC. Ultimately, the choice is yours.

I have been a happy user of electrum for a while. Quite straightforward and it just feels secure, also thanks to many reviews of others.

So Electrum it is. I'll also check out Exodus for the supported altcoins, but I think I can manage to have different wallets for each coin.

Thank you.

Here are some of the most reputable desktop wallets we currently have, all of which you have access to your private keys(very important):

  • Electrum: https://electrum.org/ | Bitcoin only, but has clones for Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash
  • Exodus: https://www.exodus.io/ | Bitcoin, Aragon, Augur, Dash, Decred, EOS, Ethereum, Golem, Litecoin
  • Armory: https://www.bitcoinarmory.com/ | Bitcoin only
  • Copay: https://copay.io/ | Bitcoin only

Take note though, Windows is very vulnerable to malware and viruses compared to other operating systems. Meaning your private keys are more vulnerable when on Windows. Depending on what operating system you're currently using, I would prefer installing a wallet on a Linux operating system or even better in my opinion if you would keep your bitcoins/cryptocurrencies on an android device or apple device instead.

If you were to keep it on an andriod or apple device, how would you deal with backing up the private key & wallet.dat file? The problem with phones is if it's lost or stolen.

What do you think about these strategies:

1. Encrypting the private key & the Wallet.dat file with GPG4Win. Secure wipe the original private key & the Wallet.dat file so there's no traces left on your computer. When you want to use your wallet program you just decrypt the Wallet.dat file. Open your wallet, do what you need to do, close it. Use GPG4Win and encrypt the new Wallet.dat file. Secure wipe the new unencrypted Wallet.dat file. Also secure wipe the old original encrypted Wallet.dat file as you now have a new encrypted Wallet.dat file.

2. What about if you were to keep your private key and your Wallet.dat file saved onto an encrypted partition/volume using Veracrypt. When you need to use your wallet you copy the Wallet.dat file off the encrypted volume once mounted to your C:/coinfolder/. Open your wallet, do what you need to do, close it. Copy the new Wallet.dat file to the encrypted volume then dismount that volume so it's fully encrypted again. Secure wipe the new unencrypted Wallet.dat file sitting in your C:/coinfolder/

For bitcoin you can afford to install electrum as it takes very less space and is also easy to use.
But for altcoins I advise you to stick with official wallets as others are quiet risky to install as they may contain hidden viruses or maybe keyloggers.

For Bitcoin, the wallet that I would recommend for the desktop is Electrum. Its light, simple to use and secure. Other alternatives include Jaxx and Exodus, which also support a variety of altcoins, whether it be Ethereum, Litecoin and others. However, wallets such as Exodus are known to have high fees for Bitcoin (as explained above) so I would recommend using Electrum for Bitcoin.

As far as I can see from this thread, four wallets has been singled out as a good choice. I personally use Jaxx because I liked that there is also a mobile version that can be synchronized with the desktop version. I also like that there is an option which allows you to convert between the coins.

the most user friendly wallet I recommend is EXODUS! These guys are really briging simplicity to life and their wallet is so intuitive that you'll get used to it in a matter of minutes. They keep on adding support for various crypto's so you'll will easily be able to convert internally anycoin (via shapeshift) to any other coin

Core is the best Desktop wallet however for many the syncing could be an issue because of storage requirements, internet bandwidth, etc.

Electrum is a slo a good choice otherwise Exodus and Jaxx are also easy to use and don't require any syncing.

In desktop wallet you are the owner of your coins and you have access to private key. But in online wallet the most of the time the wallet provider doesn't give private key. This means the wallet provider is the owner of the coins and they can shut down or whatever..

If you have a good hdd or ssd with big capacity like 2TB minimum do not hesitate to install Bitcoin Core wallet. It is the most stable of all desktop wallets and it is also very secure to use. If you don't have space you can try to install Electrum or MultibitHD wallets. Do not install web online wallets as their security can be compromised easily and they are not good wallets differently from what newbies are saying here.

Yes, generally running core on a separate hard drive is more secure as it can be taken offline. However one risk is that the hard drive may fail. You can also use a paper wallet for cold storage and a normal wallet for your hot funds.

I use Electrum as Desktop and Mobile Wallet. Jaxx Wallet https://jaxx.io/ seems to be great for altcoins? It also has a feature to import paper wallets.
I was looking for this feature because I like to gift friends some BTC on a paper wallet and they will need to extract these BTC to their own wallet at some point.

Exodus has a very nice GUI but I didnt find it very functional during my search for a way to import paper wallets.

Exodus, Jaxx, Armory, bitcoin core -  All multicoin wallets has advantages and dissatvangaes.

Jaxx - average mostly, used by many. Not requesting for pin code to enter, just when send money way, then must enter pin code. If I understand correctly you can use same jaxx on two different pc`s...

Exodus - can be used only on one pc (IP adress), but may be in most new version they already solved this? to enter your wallet you need a pin code, but no need pin code when you send your money away (opposite to Jaxx);  What is good about Exodus, that is quite comfortable for Euro zone people as you can change setting to see your coins in a value of euros (in JAXX only in USD). also in Exodus there is an exchange integraded, which can be quite comfortable and quickly sometimes if you want to exhange your altcoins from one to another and so on. As well Exodus has a lot of different altcoin wallets integrated (decred, ether, bcc, btc of course and many others).

Armory - what is good about armory, that it really difficult hacked (so they say so), because you use two armories (as one). one is on your online computer, another is offline. So all signatures (to send money) you sign in offline computer...  but I never tried Armory myself honostly...not sure it is all works correctly;

bitcoin core - a classic. personally I don`t use this atm.

So from 10 points I think I would give 8 points to Exodus, 6 points to Jaxx, 7 to Armory and 7 to bitcoin core. I would choose Exodus / Jaxx, mostly Exodus because of more possibilities of different alts.

P.s but of course, If you have reasonable amount of coins I would reccommend to buy a hardware wallet - this is currently a safest way to keep your coins.

Exodus is good for a number of altcoins. This wallet is easy to use, but transaction costs are very high fot BTC. I reccomend  Electrum for bitcoin.

I also use and would highly recommend the Exodus. I have never been disappointed with it, it works very well and I think it is really worthy and probably the only worth recommending.
