Title: brain wallet: BTC thiefed?
Post by: s1mon on August 14, 2017, 09:18:31 PM
Hey guys,

about 4 years ago I bought a bitcoin on btc-e and decided to leave it as it is after the first "crash".
Since I didn't trust btc-e (good decision) I transfered it to a old-fashioned brain wallet (not a good decision) and didn't look after it since this year in April.

To my horror I noticed, that it has been transfered to another account in January, and there it is still lying.

My question now: What would you recommend to do? Is there a real chance to get it back somehow?

The brain wallet address: https://blockchain.info/address/12Xhw3p6G2d8UmBXvYiY8SpM1kugrpFUAQ

Thanks for any help!

I'm sorry for your lost, but there is nothing you can do to recover your coins.

This is why you shouldn't use a Brain wallet. I have seen several threads asking about them, and every time I answered that people are bad at creating randomness, which will always lead them to choose a list of words that are easily brute-forced.

thanks for your reply.

I was hoping there was a little chance a good guy was "securing" the coin, but I didn't find a message on blockchain.info :-(
But isn't it weird the coin is still lying on the new address?

It's possible that the attacker sent your coins directly to a third party like a mixer or an exchange, in which case a variety of things could have happened to it.  It's also possible that the attacker is HODLing or that they're afraid to move the coins and be subject to blockchain analysis.

It seems unlikely.  Shitloads of brain wallets have had the funds stolen from them.  Besides, BTC is an ideal asset to steal so if you're a criminal with a computer, brainwallets might be the first place you go.

As for getting it back, you'll only get it back if someone finds out who the thief is.  It seems unlikely that that'll happen, since police forces are too busy arresting people for buying a few drugs on the darknet.

Really sorry for your loss but I do not think you can do anything about your coins.

You can start all over again with some prominent alts. Never give up, my friend.

I suggest DMD Diamond, one of my favorite PoS coins. Let me know if you need any help.

since this key is already burnt and the thieve already has the key, would you mind sharing the password for the brain wallet you used, it may help people see where the problem was coming from.

sorry for your loss by the way.

There is nothing weird with that, might be hacker just want to keep whatever bitcoin he can collect to sell at high price and he have already doubled his fiat by just holding your bitcoin since January.

Sorry to know that you have lost your bitcoin which is valued over $3800 at today's price.
