Good, also make sure you don't have any trust to third parties until your BTC with Bitstamp is withdrawn to avoid the recent scam.

Don't listen to this con man....he's the one that is pissed because he can't find as many people to buy from him even though he buys for more.  He's still the middleman troll:

Successfully completed a trade for 1 BTC with mah87.

I had no issues, and we each received what we requested of the other.

Good trade.

Don't be pissed because I'm giving people a chance to do things by their own. Then they can choose to make the effort or not. But at least we are not abusing their ignorance.

People interested in learning and trading XRP already have guides to do so (dating back to February).  Its not like its a secret.  People typically use the "middleman" because they don't feel like spending an hour or two learning the ripple interface when they don't even think it will succeed.

Your post adds no value....which is why you need to bump it all day long....

Mah87, I registered a Bitstamp account to do what you're describing but I am confused.

Do I trade XRP for BTC within Ripple, and then transfer the BTC from Ripple -> Bitstamp?

If that's the case, why can't I just trade Ripple for BTC within Ripple then send to my own wallet address?

Can the Ripple account hold BTC and XRP at the same time?

Can the Bitstamp account hold XRP and / or BTC?

There are no plain old BTC within ripple, so you cannot send directly to your bitcoin address. When people put btc "into ripple" there is always somebody holding the bitcoins, for example Bitstamp.

Ripple accounts can hold XRP, BTC-IOUs, USD-IOUs, whatever other IOU currency you want to use. The only "real" currency in the ripple account is the XRP, all the rest are just IOUs from another user.

Thanks for the tip. Is there a way to tell where the IOU Bitcoins are being held (Bitstamp, or a fake gateway..)?

If you only trust the Bitstamp gateway then any BTC IOUs you receive will have actual BTC held at Bitstamp.

The ripple network is very transparent, check out https://ripple.com/graph/ (https://ripple.com/graph/), if you put in a ripple address you can see who they trust and what they hold. For your own account, you can go to the "trust" page, and for each line of trust you have there is a bar with the balance for that trust pair.

Can someone just clear up one thing... So when you make a trade are there any fees involved either through ripple or bitstamp?

And say I had been trading for a while then I want some bitcoins to go direct to my personal wallet, I guess I send from ripple to bitstamp and then from bitstamp to my wallet... Are there any fees incured in that process?

Thanks a lot and it was a good guide cos it got me started, not made a trade yet. Gonna wait a little while till I understand it some more. Cheers

No fees, but are more prone to being glitched, and its hard to withdraw as there not REAL bitcoins you get in return. you get fake btc

Actually using bitstamp as a gateway is the same than using it as an online wallet. If you don't trust bitstamp then don't use it. If you think they are could be trust then there is no reason to say those bitcoin are not real :p

you know it iron. Stop trying to be the middleman ahah

Well I know nothing about bitstamp, I will look into them a bit though and see what's up... I am a little confused though by this bit... "there is no reason to say those bitcoin are not real"...

Sounds like there is a question there as to whether they are real or not... That is a little concerning. lol... Or is it the same as when you have them on any other exchange? As in you are not really trading "real" bitcoin but rather just numbers and then they release "real" bitcoins when you withdraw?

On a side note this guy has been trying to buy my xrp's for a discount! lol...

Either way I will do some more research and then see what I decide to do.

So far I am inclined to believe you as you don't stand to gain anything... lol

The BTC on Ripple are just as real as the BTC on MtGox or any other exchange. You are trading your entries in a ledger for some other entries in a ledger, when you request a withdrawal then you get real bitcoins sent to your wallet, just like you don't get real dollars until you request a withdrawal.

I placed an Order but it didn't appear in the Order Book even after hours (although showed in My Orders) - also for the Last Trade it always says n/a after all other fields have values (this has occurred every time that I have tried to use this Trade tab).

Does the trading engine actually work at all?

Try to place the order again. It happens some bugs sometimes (still beta version). Try again, it should be written "orderaccepted" or "order refused" (because of no fund for example).

Let me know if you still have some problem i'll do my best to help you;

Tried twice - both times it said "Order Accepted" but both times did not show up in the Order Book (even after hours).

Will try again tomorrow maybe but this is looking like about the most buggy trading engine I've ever seen (should not be called "beta" but "alpha" I think when very simple trade orders do not show up). :(

It showed up in "My Order" as stated - but not in the Order Book - are you telling me that your own orders don't show up in the Order Book?

In any case at the time I placed the order it should have been (at least partially) processed (as the XRP price was actually lower than the current Bid at the time) - but instead after hours My Order was still there but no trade and nothing showing up in the Order Book.

I cancelled both orders (so they won't be there now) and I'd rather not give out exact amounts publicly (if you are working for OpenCoin then I'm sure you can work that out anyway).

I will try again and see how it goes - just to clarify one important point though should *my order* appear in the Order Book or not?

your order appears in order book yes.

I'm asking the amount for a reason. For example you may want to buy some XRP

Actually the best XRP offer (on bitstamp gateway) is 88 for an amount of 457$. If you pass an order asking 90 it won't be exchange and you'd have to wait that someone is willing to sell his xrp for that price.

A reason your order is not appearing clearly on the order book is that you put the same price than someone else, so your order is added to a previous order.

I don't know if it helps.

Selling XRP for BTC - the XRP per BTC price was 7900 and no order at that value showed up in the Order Book at all.

Now of course that price wouldn't be likely to be filled which is why I will probably just wait a while before deciding whether or not to place another such order - I can understand orders at a price being combined but that is not what I saw at all.

(am pretty sure it is no fault with your instructions btw)

Selling XRP for BTC - the XRP per BTC price was 7900 and no order at that value showed up in the Order Book at all.

Now of course that price wouldn't be likely to be filled which is why I will probably just wait a while before deciding whether or not to place another such order - I can understand orders at a price being combined but that is not what I saw at all.

it may appears on "7,899.99999999" order. Or maybe it's a display problem. But I'm pretty sure this would be working.

I will check carefully next time I place an order (but I can assure you that there was no order even as close as to 10 XRP within 7900 to the ones I had placed which I did twice a few hours between).

Indeed - it had changed to 7899.99999999 and now a reasonable portion of the order has been filled (seems my second "cancel" didn't actually occur so the order was still there today but that could be due to a poor internet connection so am not claiming any bug in regards to that).

Next step will be to get the BTC out from Bitstamp!

glad to hear you came through those step.

And BTC came through a few hours back - all in all pretty smooth apart from the trading software in Ripple itself (they need to do a *lot* of work on that).

Thanks for your the helpful instructions!
