If you want to hold your altcoins in long-term, never trust exchanges. If your coin is an Ethereum based token, you can store it in myetherwallet. Otherwise, visit the official website and see what deveplopers suggest and download desktop wallet if needed.

Paper wallet with multiple copies is the best way to store coin if going for long term investment.

I store it on my desktop wallet then I save the private keys  and print and store it in a safe place. Some coins that I bought from exchanges, I leave it in there since I am trading frequently. Its good to have a paper wallet or store in pen drive too.

If you have Ethereum based tokens you should use Mist or Myetherwallet. If you have other tokens it's always hard to install all wallets but considering your investment amount you have to need that.
Never save all your balance in exchanges. We know a lot of them got hacked or went awol before.

This is the dilemma of altcoins. If you want to invest in low market cap coins (for huge potential gains), you need to download a bunch of suspicious wallets. Otherwise, you need to keep your coins on shady exchanges that could disappear tomorrow, or get hacked.

Either get a dedicated machine and/or use virtual machines to segregate these altcoin wallets from your host machine (and your main BTC/ETH/LTC wallets, i.e. real money)... or risk holding coins on exchanges.

The other alternative is to stick to large market cap altcoins only. Then you can use things like Jaxx. MEW is also a decent option for ERC20 tokens.

and if you want to trading i think bittrex safe better than polo

If it is just a small amount or used for trading, then I keep it in the exchanges I bought them. But if it is a large amount or for hodling, I install its wallet in a desktop and use the wallet for safe keeping. Keeping coins is risky so I keep long term investment in desktop wallet.

I store some of them in wallets and other on the exchanges.

But, I don't suggest you to leave it on Poloniex because today I got banned for no reason and I still didn't get unban... This is the last time that I am using it, that's for sure.

Uh, that sounds worrisome. I know there are a lot of complaints about them right now. Could you elaborate a bit? Did they provide a reason for freezing the account?

This is why you should avoid exchanges. Bittrex is locking lots of accounts and enforcing verification, and Poloniex has been plagued by these kinds of complaints for months already. Stay safe out there, and keep minimal amounts on the exchanges. I only trade long term because of this, and I tend to enter/exit positions over several days to avoid having much funds locked on the exchange at any one time.

Exactly what answer are you looking for over here ? There are two ways to keep your coins. On an exchange or in the actual wallet.  Obviously we going to tell you to use the original altcoin wallet why would you use any other. You know an exchange is a bad place to put your coins so why are you even asking here as if we going to give you some magical answer ? Like what exactly are you expecting here ?

As the above user say stay away from polo and bittrex. Bittrex are idiots. They locked my account and said I must verify since it was worth over $1000 which it wasn't. When I told them they I locked it right away. If they want my details I want theirs.

I think it's such a hassle getting them and saving the coins etc.

I used mostly the main wallet for altcoins (ex. myetherwallet) because i'm planning on investing it on a long term. Don't ever trust those exchanges, just put your wallet to the official wallet of the altcoin. People here told you to stay away to poloniex and bittrex, that's why don't trust any exchanges for your altcoins if you want to invest it for a long term.

Perhaps myetherwallet could be your choice because its performance is good equipped with adequate security like a private key, the json file and also more, myetherwallet has a fee which is not too big and not too little adjusting of nominal transactions. myetherwallet having problems login in the insecurity of phishing scams so should take care to use it.

I don't use other wallets for my altcoins other than myetherwallet.com for Etherium-based altcoins and ETC and waveswallet.io for my waves-based coins. But not for long because I don't store them for a very long time. I always trade them.

You should see the altcoin website they have other options.
If Altcoins are just tokens go with myetherwallet. :) :)

Exchanges are not good options due to security risks

If a certain altcoin do have its own respective wallet then its the best choice to select that one rather than on deciding up on putting your coins or leaving on exchanges.Knowing that storing them there would really have the risk on losing them compared on storing them on your own wallet with they keys saved. If its an ETH-platform based coins then most likely people do make us of myetherwallet and if its waves based then waveswallet.io would be good.

I think if you keep altcoin too long in swallow exchanger it is very risky, preferably for long term and in large quantity you should use offline wallets from the coin by confiding private key and password, I think it is safer but if only used for temporary and Will be withdraw to the local bank you can use the wallet exchanger  :)

Paper wallet with multiple copies is the best way to store coin if going for long term investment.

Far simpler: Old laptop, dedicated use. Mostly stuffed away "airgapped". Occasional full harddisk backups against hardware failures. Two copies are sufficient. If it has cd burner, stuff wallets on cds.

That paper bussiness is a hassle, to high chance of transscription errors and major headaches.

Electrum is a good wallet for bitcoin only...

if you want one for your alts, check out Myetherwallet (MEW), it can store all erc20 tokens...

if none of these satisfy your needs, u'd probably need to get individual wallets for each altcoi

Indeed: keeping your coins on an online exchange for a longer period of time is basically a big no-no when you're concerned about security, theft, stuff like that. Exchanges that exists seeminly unfazed for years can disappear overnight. Example: BTC-e.com.

I'm in the process of removing my coins from an online exchange as I speak. However, this doesn't go without problems as it seems ...

This risk is unavoidable and now the next issue is rapidly flowing into the poloniex market, they are considered the next btc-e if not submitting the financial statement files billed by the SEC, I also believe in storing altcoin in myetherwallet and waves. There is an article that mentions that blockchain will receive altcoin on their platforms, I consider this news to be very good news.

For maintaining it, i have created account and help of the privte key i can easily entry my account. So it will your choice that what kind of altcoin you have.

You can store your altcoins in myetherwallet. I think you should use myetherwallet cause that is the most used wallet in transaction nowadays, if you are using altcoins myetherwallet is the best wallet for you cause they've got a lot known tokens that might using. Just go to myetherwallet.com and create your own wallet for your altcoins.

Get a Trezor, consider paper wallets too.

Not an option for most altcoins. I'm also worried about their long term integrity, just like I worry about storing wallet backups on thumb drives over the course of years. Paper wallets are always a reasonable option, agreed.

But the fact remains: you need to choose between third party risk (exchanges getting hacked or exit scamming or getting shut down) and the inconvenience of downloading lots of altcoin wallets (plus the risk of malware). There's no great answer. The safest way is to store coins in wallets on separate VMs, with no access to real money like BTC or ETH.

God no... I dont understand why people store their altcoins in Exchangers, dont you people know that a lot of exchangers are having too many scam acussations? A lot of them are just dissapearing.
I had like 0.50 in Poloniex and they did not let me withdraw that eth, i sent them a ticket and they replied me e2 months after.
I dont suggest anyone to store their altcoins in such sites like this ones, all you are gonna get is a scam in a long term.

Yeah, if you think you are gonna store your altcoin for couple of years or months then don't reserve it any exchange site. Because it's too risky to trust any third party exchange site. Collect those coin your own wallet. You can use ethert/waves wallet (witch alcoin based on it) and you can use coin own wallet (witch coin have there own wallet) for more safety. Using wallet is the more secure than exchange site... :)

Yes Exodus as well as the Jaxx wallets offers ease of use and multiple cryptos. They are a good starting point for anyone, as they learn more about hardware solutions and paper wallets they may wish to get into that.

Try using myether wallet wallet to save it. Since the first time I also used it and there is never a constraint that can harm at the time of coin exchange until now.
