Title: Setting up OpenCL wit a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470
Post by: matt7902 on June 22, 2011, 06:57:42 PM
To start of, here is what I am working with:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470
Windows 7 64-bit build 7600 [No Service Pack]
Dell Studio 1558
GUIMiner (based off poclbm?)

Here is my problem: I know my graphics card supports OpenCL, but I can't seem to get it to work.

I've been trying to get this to work for several days and have done a lot of googling, uninstalling, and re-installing of things. From device manager, I have tried asking windows to find a new driver, but I have had problems with the latest version of my card's driver before and for some reason GUIMiner refuses to run when I have this latest driver installed. I've also tried downloading the latest Catalyst (which seems to be the most common solution people purpose on the internets, it comes with the APP SDK and whatnot), but it doesn't solve the problem. GPU Caps Viewer even says I have a bugged driver when I download the latest Catalyst. I just don't know where to go from here.

Thanks.

I just went through this with a Mobility 5850.

If you just download the latest version of Catalyst from the AMD site and the Stream SDK you can overclock the hell out of it (bad idea on a notebook) but opencl will have a driver incompatibility problem.

You need to download the latest Catalyst Mobility.  That should solve the problem for you.  Also the Mobility Catalyst doesn't have the Overdrive capability :(

Then do a clinfo command. If you are good you should not see the Aborted message near the top.

The linky http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx#1

If clinfo checks out you should be able to mine.

Thanks, I finally got it to work. The link you provided me was for the correct driver, and then after downloading it I just had to go into device manager and select the correct one. The problem seemed to be that windows thought the standard 11.6 driver (as opposed to the 11.6 mobility) was the newest one and it wouldn't switch the two automagically.

wow overclocking on a laptop doesn't it get awfully hot/loud?
do you leave it on 24/7 or only some hours a day?
@brutus how much do you get with your 5850M ?

cheers!

My 5470 gets 12-14 mhash/s (not OC'ed). Unfortunately, you can't really expect much from a low end laptop card.

Speaking over clocking, though, how is it best to go about overclocking a card like the 5470? I mean doing that on a laptop does sound a little sketchy, but I would be willing to try.

I only had it mining when I was using it; but use TriXX or Afterburner.

What do you set your core/memory clock frequencies to? At about 950/1000 I start to get some screen artifacts.

1050/300 with TriXX and it runs fine if im using -f 20 with poclbm.

Hi, I have the same 5470 gpu and would like to download the file for openCL but the link requires a username and password. Can anyone share a link without this restriction or even a link to sign up to support.amd.com? thanks

5470 gets 12-14 mhash/s - so slow.
My 5870 gets 400 mhash
