Title: How to get involved to understand crypto world
Post by: BittyBatty on August 31, 2017, 04:54:10 PM
Hi,

I am a IT developer with quite a bit of experience but never paid attention to development aspects of crypto/smart contracts. I have been playing with BTC and ETH for sometime so i do understand from the currency aspect of it.

Now i want to get involved with the development aspect of it to get to the details of the technology and to unlock the opportunity it has for a tech developers like me.

Can you share your thoughts how one could travel the path and where to start and what to follow. I am sure there are many like me and a healthy discussion would be very helpful for many.

If there is was a discussing in this line and provide answers to my questions please point me in that directions.

TIA

Hi,

the crazy world of crypto would bring you immedeatly to bitcoin.org, to understand the eco system. There is a developer section: https://bitcoin.org/en/developer-documentation
Then you could read probably the online book (or buy it) from Andreas: "Mastering Bitcoin", here: http://chimera.labs.oreilly.com/books/1234000001802/ It is available in many languages.
Also there is the very good post from Ken: http://www.righto.com/2014/02/bitcoins-hard-way-using-raw-bitcoin.html
On youtube you find Bitcoin 101, which explains alot.
And of course this forum has many links/references, similiar here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2131710

Given the current state of affairs, whats the right place to be as a tech person in crypto world?  Ether or something else?

what do you mean? Where to get the most value by entering into the domain?
Crypto currencies all have different flavours, from blockchain timing, over blockchain design up to smart contracts.
I'd recommend starting with Bitcoin. Thats like a foundation to the many crypto currencies, and go step by step. Once you grasped it, and can't get enough :D, continue with "smart contracts" (yes, Ether is a possibility, also AEON, written in ERLANG), and then maybe have a look at DAGs.
There is plenty of room in this space  ;D

If you're interested in expanding your knowledge on the fundamental principles behind cryptocurrencies, this article gives a great introduction to the theoretical and historical background of Bitcoin, including references for further reading. It also briefly touches on the subject of smart contracts, Ethereum and private blockchains.

Got any recommendations on reading up on DAGs in the context of cryptocurrencies? I've been reading the Byteball whitepaper lately and I'm not quite sure what to make of it.

Thanks for the links!

It's really fascinating how Bitcoin gave birth to a whole new domain, but it's not all that easy to discern the weird but good ideas from the plain old stupid ones. So far I didn't find a cryptocurrency that "clicked" with me the way Bitcoin did (which I also at first dismissed as a plain old stupid idea).

Hi BittyBatty,
First of all, it's always nice to greet new people to the blockchain developer community.
I started like you a year ago, knowing very little about the developing aspect of blockchain oriented projects and the limited resources to educate yourself. Right now, the community is growing at a fast rate and you're able to find resources to speed up your learning process everywhere. I would recommend you to get familiar or refresh the basics of HTML, CSS & JS for frontend development and NodeJs for backend prior to jumping into blockchain (freecodecamp.com is an excellent website to get the basics of frontend and Udemy has some nice courses on backend). This is because blockchain is only supposed to act as a layer in between the two. Once you decide to start on solidity, jump into the docs headfirst. Study the language in depth and try to use it to look up things that you don't understand within the provided examples. If you need any help you can always PM me!

Appreciate your insight and thanks for your helping hand. I will sure reach out to you at right time.

First, start with Bitcoin. It's king of cryptocurrencies. Go first with bitcoin.org. It has many useful information for you. Then check out your national Bitcoin information website. Then go with coindesk.com and other bitcoin information news. When you understand Bitcoin go to higher level: altcoins. Read about Ethereum, it has a bright future. Don't forget that Ethereum is platform not currency.

There are more than enough coders out there and not really a need for more. You can start by doing simply stuff and playing with the system. Create, build and push you own TX's, create a new coin and play with it. Try to write your own rewards system based on a new approach.

Hello,
I would recommend you to read the articles on CoinTelegraph, and Coindesk to have an overview of the current trend.
You can also dig deeper by reviewing the post on this forum, a lot of useful information :)
Good luck!

At the beginning of this year, I did not look further then Bitcoin. Today I have seen Bitcoin, Ethereum, and NEO code. Each of them uses different programming languages. I recommend looking into ICO projects to get an idea how smart contracts work on Ethereum since those projects are everywhere right now. Most have an open source GitHub page showing all the contracts. You can easily go on the Ethereum test net to understand how everything works behind it. Of course, the blockchain from Bitcoin is open source as well. To replicate takes a lot more time. Currently, the quickest way to learn the basics is to start with Ethereum after that you can look into what coin you want to start making something with. Each coin got a different goal.

Do not put new coins out there, we have way too many being introduced daily and they do nothing more than just clog the system and create chaos.
There has been a lot of coins and their replicas in the market , already a lot has been developed and still its takes a lot to understand all the cryto technologies.

I would also like to highlight the book from Andreas Antonopoulos "Mastering Bitcoin".
He is currently working on "Mastering Ethereum". If it is as good as Mastering Bitcoin, I would also highly recommend it. Release date should be somewhere in February 2018.

If you are thinking explicitly of bitcoin scripting (smart contract programming), there is a good video from Andreas where he explaines how transactions work in bitcoin).

Here is the video:

What is block and why the rate of Bitcoin keep changing all the time. Why it is untraceable and secure the privacy. Many thanks sir.

Bitcoin is not untraceable. The opposite is true. It is highly traceable. But you will find out by yourself when studying Bitcoin.
If you want more details regarding this, you could start searching for "Bitcoin Pseudonymous".
There are ways to secure your privacy but you have to take care about it by yourself. You don't have it out of the box.

You need to read alot of books as a start, and if you have some programming knowledge (c/c++ especially), you can download the bitcoin source code and try to analyse and understand it, many programmers say that it's not that hard to understand.
here are some articles you can start with:

Depends on what your interest is, whether you're interested in the trading side or technical side or general economics.
I'd suggest picking up a good book and reading it. I really enjoyed "Mastering Bitcoin" although its more of a technical book than a trading or economics book. It's still worth reading if you're reasonably technical so you develop a good grounding in what Bitcoin actually is in terms of technology.

Beyond that there are some good Podcasts and website that cover the trading side.

The best way for me to learn something is always making small project at first.
So if you want to develop some smart contracts - try to build some kind of a crypto chat, where there will be no DB, but that chat will be all stored on all user sides.
it will be a good challenge for you)

Limited emission guarantees the growth of bitcoin cost with increasing demand. Many have dubbed bitcoin digital gold, because like gold, it is a limited resource. Although at present the volume of annual global gold mining is approximately the same as bitcoin, which appears in a smaller quantity, strictly according to the laid-down algorithm. If you look at the impressive growth rate of bitcoin for the whole time, you can notice a tremendous increase in demand, especially in the last year.

It 's not simple. Each cryptocurrency token embodies a tradable good. This can be for example coins, points, certificates, in-game items etc. This means that crypto tokens can be used to represent a share in a company or can be used as central committee voting rights.
They are often used to raise funds in a crowdsale. That is why many people refer to them as cryptocurrency assets or crypto assets and crypto equity.

It is very easy to get involved in something in this age of internet. You can observe, watch and listen to crypto news and updates. You just get the feel of it. Experience will also be helpful when it comes to trading.
