To answer your post, heres my long term coins: BTC, ETH, XEM, NEO, WINGS, WAVES, UBQ, NXT? Why because they have a solid business model to support their crypto.

For shortterm or day trade: BCH, STEEM. I choose them because they are pump and dump coins. Nothing else.

One with an actual real use, and thats already signing LARGE real world contracts is this

https://www.dentcoin.com/dentcoin

But its not listed anywhere, i find it extremely frustrating not being able to buy any.

I believe they are on some chinese exchange but yeah I dont know how to buy from there.

This coin is still a risk but the people behind it seem pretty experienced, serious and unlike many altcoins that dont have a real use, this one could become huge in some areas (africa, asia).

Their business model is basically investing in unsed mobile data contracts, to resell it. One issue against this might be more and more service providers offering flatrates. I would suggest looking into the mobile markets of africa and asia , how popular/realistic flatrates are, before investing larger amounts.

I would say that if you want to invest in crypto currencies and diversify your investment, everything points to the coins with the highest market capitalizations.
Let's say the top five, maybe the top ten.
It's the same in the stock market. If you buy the stocks from a major index with the highest capitralizations, the past shows that you are doing nothing wrong with that.
Of course none of that coins will give you hundreds of percentages of profit over night. They are all too well examined for that.
But they will not go belly up as well. And even if one or two of them do, the rest will absorb that loss easily.

ETH, WAVES, LSK, RIPPLE, NEO

All of them is just like a mandatory, there is a reason for that caused by those are the main coin that built the more development in various level or innovation.
I think that will have a lot of value in the future. Double digit speculation is a must.

Those are the top coins right now, bitcoin, eth, xem, waves. These coins are good for long term investments and supposed to be in higher price in the future. They have professional devs working in their respective development and their roadmaps are clear.

BTC and ETH..
both of which I highly recommend, because these two coins always have more value than the other coin
it means that the price increase is very attractive to have ;D

Waves are making waves right now, and I think is a good long term investment in additiin to the regulars, eth, bitcoin. You can add some coins in the top of coinmarketcap. They are in the top for a reason maybe except for bch. It is too young.

Bitcoin and Etherium. Bitcoin because, it is the no.1 cryptocurrency and is the most potent to be continuously grow in the future because of its high demand and large community. Etherium because it is the competitor of Bitcoin and probably the no.1 altcoin as of this moment. Also, Etherium is commonly used in ICOs. Every coin is potent to be a must have, it is just that all crypto are volatile so fluctuations cannot be avoided.

OMG, TenX -- I find most altcoins to be a gamble. I'm gambling on these.

i think rain is a very good coin to have for long term, offers a very good pos reward, and the dev plans to have masternodes, so after the hard cap you can keep getting your coin, now this coin is only pos pow ended

Of course, the BTC and ETH are the top 2 coins that we should hold, and as you can see, they also have the top two market cap. Also ,you can hold some coins with much potential in my opinion, such as XAS, a Chinese coin, just like another NEO.

BTC
LTC

Bitbay - decentralised market places will become important especially DDE

Blocknet - decentralised exchanges = big part of the puzzle which is still missing - you want a trustless end to end environment this is essential

eth - or similar platform

A good anon coin

zcash, pivx, zcoin, xmr, bbr cloak  - who can say which

Byteball - very interesting project

New ico projects can keep their super inflated shit... these insta icos 100% instamines to insider whales are dangerous. Your investment is in solely in their hands. Most of the road maps look like a bunch of dreams and fantasies that will never come to fruition before they burn through the dev funds and start a new ico fanatasy under a different name.

Old trusted projects with proven devs working streadily for years through their roadmaps with wide distribution and loyal communities and use cases that are not saturated.

My top 4 are BTC, LTC, Dash and Etherium ... Not because I expect them to be homeruns, but because I expect them to be the most stable and steady long term holdings.

Ill put money into smaller and newer coins, hoping for bigger returns, but those are my primary holdings.

Everyone here's going to have a vested interest answering that. It'll be influenced by their own holding. Personally, I'd be most comfortable for rest of this year with the big top of the chart coins. I'd be least comfortable with ERC20 ICO type coins - they face regulatory risk from SEC hammer on their heads.

I recently bought some altcoins but I just don't know for how long am I going to hold them for. I am just hoping that these coins will benefit me in a long run. The only reason why I bought them was because their value went down, I didn't even do any background check about any of these projects. I bought neo, monaco, reddcoin, nxt, omg, safex. I don't know if they are the top coins or not, but I just bought them.

I personally love Ark and its uses/goals/delegate system, but I literally cannot afford to buy into it enough for me to feel I wouldnt be wasting my time.

If I could afford a couple hundred ARK I would buy it and hold it for an eternity while buying little bits more and more over time. But the delegate payout system heavily benefits those on the top while people with small amounts get next to nothing. Its built like a huge pyramid, and even though I believe in its future, I feel I missed the boat, and Im likely better off putting my small amount of disposable income into stuff like 0x, XBY, and even DNT, Waves, NEO and ETH even though many of them have higher costs per coin.

The feeling of 'being on the bottom' (despite that being the absolute reality of the situation) really sucks for me with ARK even though I love the project.

Everyone will tell you to invest on a coin which they hold lots of them, but I'll tell you to study their charts of at least past 6 months before making any move

Mate, you should consider these coins for your study and research: Lsk-Eth-Iconomi-Siacoin-Storj-Golem- and many more, I can't just give you all the coins

I see as good coins, but I provided you with a few coins with potential it's up to you if you ever show any interest in them. and if Enjin coin team could pull

This off perfectly then Enjin coin will have a great future as well.

Most of the top 10 are must haves. They are like the Blue Chip stocks of the crypto world. I would also have a small investment in all of the crypto platforms like Ark, stratis, neo, omg, nem, waves because I feel those will all go up very nicely once more coins begin to be branched off them!

I am looking at the far future for these coins. The are still a lot out there though. Many coins are actually doing great in their road maps, to be fair. It is good for the entire crypto market.

LakeBanker's ICO is a spinoff of long-standing crypto exchange LakeBTC.com (http://LakeBTC.com). We've been around for years and we are currently top 20 in the world for Bitcoin trading volume. We have an impeccable reputation for security and reliability.

The LakeBanker "Crowd-Banking" platform has been operating in Beta within LakeBTC for 1.5 years. The concept has been proven. Now it's ready for the world. We have a long term business plan and our token BAC is well integrated into our business model.

Phase 1 of our Token Sale. is active now. We're offering a small number of Tokens at a significant discount to generate interest and feedback from early participants.

If you're interested, check out our ANN thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2028648.0) and our formal white paper (https://lakebanker.com/whitepaper.pdf)

Although as with most ICOs some will get involved for the chance of a short term flip, we hope some investors will recognise the long term strength of our Token.

Our own team tokens are subject to a 5 years vesting schedule, which is the longest we know of for any ICO project.

Well, i have a couple that I actually like or as we can say, my favorites.
Here they are : BTC, BCH, NEO, ETH, WAVES, RIPPLE, and BAT.
I have chosen this coins because they all have great potentials and great platforms. Which what an investor would really want to see into a coin that he wants to invest in. But i am also considering to invest on some other coins like: EOS, XMR, GNT, WAVES, NEM, and XVG. But only if they are still looking good by the time i get enough investment funds.

as for other coins, a very nice and I made a good profit from it : Sigt - a very young and promising project, I hope all problems will be sorted out
than it come XVG - a very good margin I made recently

XRP, ETH, BTC... the top 3 in cap, but in reverse order. Top 3 because I refuse to recognise BCH as a real coin ;)

XRP is really a special case, but I won't enter into arguments about it here. This is really a long-termer, not so good for short-term.
ETH is doing very well with the EEA, and is (currently) the best smart contract coin.
BTC might not increase in % terms as much as other coins, but is a safer bet and you always need a BTC balance for trading.

I think BTC, ETH, LTC, DOGE, MONERO, Waves and a lot more are good to keep. I only have a few coins because it's really hard to think what coins to invest in. There's a lot of potential coins, but only few are worth keeping for a long time. This might be a good time to buy altcoins because bitcoin price is rising.

have invested in a few different ICO's / Presales since the price of Ethereum has dropped.

One that caught my eye was Crowdholding, since they are in their pre-sale it's a great chance to get more for your money. Also their token will be used in a co-creation system. It all looks very promising and worth keeping hold of rather than just trading when it gets onto exchanges.

They match all the criteria i look for in a ICO / Pre sale (good strong team on all fronts, solid ideology, finite coins and a good whitepaper)

I think BTC is little too obvious, other than that I would strongly recommend ETH it has great potential and a good amount of popularity. BCH and LTC are the next priority, BCH being the official fork of BTC it's good having it around for a litter longer and LTC has been around as much as BTC so that's a good excuse to hold it together with BTC.

BTC - ETH - LISK - WAVES - LTC

Great coins for me , and 2019 is the best place for them.

All the roadmap, the entourage, the situation, and the perpetual decline of society/bank ... that situation could be very nicely !

At the #AltcoinUnicorn Games where we are looking for '1 long term sustainable Altcoin unicorn investment' - the final is setup between Ripple and IOTA

I think ethereum, monero, litecoin and dash are must have coins . CIVIC, waves and straits are also very good projects which have alot of potential to grow.
