Title: Solve these puzzles for BTC private keys! (Current prize: 0.005 BTC)
Post by: zeroth on September 03, 2017, 06:03:35 AM
=== PUZZLE 2 ===

I'm currently funding Puzzle 2 myself due to no donations!

Puzzle 2 will be released once the prize at the address below exceeds 0.005 BTC.

Make donations to the Puzzle 2 prize here: https://blockchain.info/address/13JMHMRSJHCmfsV6EArfYxG9CVHLAi79yC

The winner of Puzzle 1 is currently unknown. Please comment here if you won so people know that I didn't steal it! Without this Puzzle 2 will probably never happen...

=== GUIDELINES ===

  • WINNERS: If you solve a puzzle and sweep the address then please let everyone know here so that the system becomes trustworthy (people will know that I'm not stealing the prizes for myself!) Also it might be nice for winners to make a donation to the next puzzle.
  • FUTURE PUZZLES: If you would like me to create future puzzles then please donate to the next puzzle's address above. I'll create the next puzzle once the funds at its address exceed the final amount swept for the current puzzle. The next puzzle will be posted at a random time unless a fixed time is decided through further discussion.
  • THE PRIZE: If you would like to up the stakes on the current puzzle then feel free to donate to the current puzzle's address, but donations to the next puzzle are preferable. I have started with 0.005 BTC as this is quite a lot of money for me to give away. At the moment this is more about fun than money but that may change if people donate a lot to future puzzles!
  • DIFFICULTY: I have no idea how long it will take for people to solve this puzzle and sweep the address. I will adjust the difficulty of future puzzles accordingly, with the aim that puzzles take a number of days for people to solve, perhaps with people collaborating and sharing the prize.
  • IDEAS FOR CLUES: If you have an interesting idea for a clue in a future puzzle then PM me. Your reward will be a slight advantage if I decide incorporate your idea in the future.
  • IMPROVEMENT: Let me know if you think I've missed anything important here.

DISCLAIMER: Whoever sweeps the address first gets the funds! Any strategies are allowed (except for hacking my computer please). My clues may be ambiguous, debatable or I may have made errors. If you think I've made an error then let me know but if someone else guesses correctly whilst we're discussing a potential error then they have won fairly, and it's not my fault that you missed out!

If I understand good I have to solve a puzzle, to find the private key of that transaction and claim the prize. You give some clues to find the private key but where is the puzzle to be solved, to find the private key, please? The clues are easy to dechipher, but I am asking, what puzzle do I have to answer and solve to find the private key of that transaction? There are 155 bits in the clues that you have given, a private key has 256 bits.

Hi valentin68, thanks for your interest. The only additional information I'll give you for now is that there are exactly 51 clues and my use of Ƀ's and X's is important!

Nice puzzle. Great work. For me to difficult, but I am sure, there will be experienced who solve the puzzle.

Thanks adalov. Perhaps I'll make some simpler ones in the future. What kind of topics/clues might be more accessible for you? I realise these are fairly mathematical/programming based.

That's one of the harder bits :D Are those the only two you have left? One hint: "lost" is an appropriate verb to use for that clue :)

Yes. I am on some track I think, because I see connection to some other clues, but I still don't know. Seems like something hard to do if you are not there.

They are hard but shouldn't be impossible. I tested them out earlier and they should all be possible with some knowledge of mathematics/computing and an internet connection :)

I am missing some knowledge then. I spent more time on this one then all the others combined. Granted the others might be wrong, but at least I know I could solve them in 10 seconds. There is just no way for this one for me. I got so close, but that 20$ was just not meant to be mine I guess :D

Very nice concept. I hope you get some sweet donations coming your way to add to the price pool. I don't think puzzle is for me to solve yet. Maybe in the future. Good luck to everyone who is trying to solve it!

I have no idea what 45&46 even mean!
Besides if you are just stick on 2 answers you can simply brute force it. There only 3,364 possibilities after all... ;)

37)   XXXXXXXXXɃXXXXX = (11000000+110000+1100+11)*(11+1100+110000+11000000)
1111 1110 0000 0001
XXXX XXXX XɃXX XXX(?)

missing an x??

Hi gesden. Figuring out how to read the clues is part of the puzzle... There are 51 clues and only one "Ƀ" in each clue! :)

Can anyone post solution after reward is claimed? I can't solve few points. I'm really curious about the solution.
Great job zeroth for creating such an interesting game! Will you make the next puzzle harder to solve?

Thanks xSkyer. It would be nice to post the solution in a way that doesn't give it a way for people who want to solve the puzzle for fun later though. Perhaps a separate solutions thread? Or is there some kind of "hide text unless clicked/hovered over" function on here...? I'll probably make the next puzzle harder, but it depends on how long people take to solve this one and how much prize money people donate for the next one.

I expect knowledge of the solution for one puzzle will probably help to figure out subsequent ones, so it's worth having it posted somewhere for that reason. I'll think I'll just add new puzzles to the OP and solutions or attempts are allowed to be posted in the subsequent comments.

13 and 16 I think you made an obvious mistake.  11 seems wrong to me too.  For 4 I picked uppercase, but the clue isn't clear.  Not sure about 8,9, 22,23, 30,31,32, 45,46, 49,50,51

If I don't clarify case then I mean what I feel to be the most commonly used case for that situation.

Ignoring the first character (as we know what that is and ignoring it makes percentages nice) you are 68% correct.

I have modified Clues 3 & 4 in the OP as some research has shown me that this is too ambiguous.

Without giving any specific clues I would say that there are at least two cases where you have only used part of the information given. I think it's fair to say that all the information in every clue is important and if you have ignored anything then take another look and see if that lets get a more specific answer.

There is also at least one "silly" mistake related to case or something more obvious like that.

I'm going to sleep in an hour or so but I'm happy to give further comments on a revised version.

I'm wondering whether people should be able to PM me their attempts or whether the "penalty" for getting help is giving away information to others publicly? If you did PM me an attempt then any hints I gave would definitely be posted here publicly for fairness. What are people's thoughts on that?

I think the fact that people are at around 70% correct after a day of puzzling means that the difficulty level is pretty good. Just don't give up, the last 30% isn't as hard as it may seem. Or course the fact that you don't know which 30% is incorrect makes things more tricky... But I'll up the hints later if necessary.

If anyone is working away on this quietly in the background and think they might get it without any hints then maybe say so and I can try to be less helpful to everyone else ;)

That is why I have not yet shared my answers. I guess I will wait at least a day or two before sharing where I am. Maybe some people prefer a fresh start before the "sharing" begins.

I'll probably only sign a message if I ever find the answer ::)

Okay, well I think for now I will not give any hints on specific characters, although I may amend anything I think is genuinely ambiguous. If people do post their attempts I may give general hints about something that is causing multiple problems.

I'll probably only sign a message if I ever find the answer ::)

What do you mean by this last sentence sorry?

In order to prove ownership of a key in bitcoin, you can sign a message with the private key and everyone can easily verify that you own the private key to a public key (bitcoin address).
Like what people are doing here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.0

Ah, I see what you mean. I guess that stops someone from quietly solving the puzzle and taking the funds while someone else claims to have been the winner on this forum? I had assumed they'd just sweep the address and then post the privkey on here but your way means that they don't have to give away the privkey straight away. I think it makes sense for the privkey to be available once the funds have been moved because otherwise the winner is at an advantage for the next puzzle by being the only person to know how every clue worked.

I certainly need the winner to state/prove they have won on here to convince people that I'm not the one taking the funds so that people will be more likely to donate to new puzzles. I assume it's in the winner's best interests as that way the puzzling can continue and they may well win again.

I'll be gone for approximately 24 hours for sleep/work. If nobody's solved it by the time I'm back I may post some more hints based on any attempts or queries that people have posted.

Have fun puzzling  :)

Hi everyone,

The puzzle has been solved and the funds withdrawn!

I assume it was solved by aleksej996 but whoever it was could they let everyone know here and possibly make a contribution to the next puzzle's address to get the ball rolling.

For everyone else, once the winner has been confirmed, could you please consider making a donation to the next puzzle so that we can continue with these? I'll try to make each puzzle fairly different from the previous one. I'll get started on it later today but won't release it until the address holds at least 0.005 BTC, preferably a little more.

Once again thanks to everyone who got involved ☺

Zeroth

PS When I get back from work I think I'll release the solution so that everyone else can figure out where they were going wrong.

If you make another puzzle, are you going to post the clues in this thread or create a new one?  Do you perhaps have a website that you could post these on?

@zeroth

Great initiative!
Unfortunately I only see this topic now... But it didn't matter, I do not have enough skills to solve it.

But I'm curious to see the solution.
Is it possible to post the solution and a brief explanations on the harder ones?

Unfortunately I wasn't the one who solved it. I kind of gave up yesterday, after I was stuck on few questions for so long.

I can explain any specific clues/characters if you like.

Hmmm... This is what I was hoping wouldn't happen. Whoever solved it needs to comment here so that everyone else can trust that I didn't take the money for myself. Without this trust nobody will donate to the next puzzle and the winner won't have a chance to win any more BTC... So it makes sense for the winner to announce it!

What was "Conical Frustum @ 200 10281"?  I don't see where "aP" comes from.

Google "200 10281" then investigate more closely on Google Maps :) Satellite version is clearer.

Yeah, I had real trouble with that one. I got some highway in Montana when I searched it and though it has something to do with it, since Montana was mentioned in other clues, like the one with a radio station, where btw I made the only mistake and wasn't able to solve the puzzle, since there were two radio stations listed on Wikipedia from Montana on the same frequency.

Hahaha. I don't think anyone would give you hints for free bro. ;)

You seem very smart, I think you can figure out the answer on your own and claim the reward for yourself. :)
