Here's the blog post from Coinbase's FAQ (https://support.coinbase.com/customer/portal/articles/1148716-payment-methods-for-us-customers) and support service site. Coinbase will accept payments from any bank account or credit card. that's right you can buy coin from coinbase using fiat and from there if you are aiming to go and trade with alts trading you can start from there andcreate accounts with bittrex and poloniex though I'm not sure if what you meant about trade if that's only for bitcoin or you also interested with other coins.
