Title: Mining rig fan airflow
Post by: joboy84 on September 18, 2017, 03:23:11 PM
Hello,

I bought this second hand rig frame, but the seller didn't used the fans.

I saw both configurations on the web; but I wonder which is the best :

1) The fans should put airflow in (green arrow)
2) The fans should put airflow out (red arrow) ?

Thank you for your help

Reference cards, as the cards in the photo, blow the air in the direction of the green arrow, so you should use the additional fans to blow in the same directions

Thank you for this explication :)

This looks nice I will try it on my next test rig.

I am now using nvOC, but at this moment I am mining mostly Ethash and this XMOS looks very light weight.

Are there any plans to make an AMD supported version with overclock and undervolt options?

Where can I buy fan couplers like the ones on your rig? It would be better than the external fan I'm currently using. Thanks.

I don't know. They were delivered with the rig frame.

Maybe you have to check with the seller to see if he's selling them separately

I would go with the default airflow which on these stock type cards is out the exhaust or shown as with the green arrow.      But actually I would test both and see what happens over 6 hours average, the reason being the setup in your room has an influence.

It could be more important where you place the rig relevant to the nearest window or cold air source I think.  I guess would exhaust towards the window but I saw one video where he setup like a circular cyclone effect from air coming in one window around the room and then back out the other window.   I've no idea if it actually worked as fluid dynamics and chaos theory comes into play when considering complex free airflow so who knows but it sounds a good idea in theory.

I've tried to pipe cold air towards my own rig but Im fairly sure the pipe way too small.   Originally for cold water, also I have a great big tube that would swallow my entire arm to go from a window to the rig but it would be slightly awkward to snake through the entire room.   I need a bigger clear room is the main point there, re OP we cant easily tell you without seeing the wider context and you are just better off testing all scenarios yourself if at all possible :)

Have the fans do cooler air the green route.  Then it helps to exhaust the hot air that moves past the cards away from the cards and out of the environment.  The air should be always flowing.

I know it's probably too late for this, but if I'm not mistaken, the green arrow indicates cool air coming into the cards and the red arrow indicates the hot air exiting the rig.

i find that using reference card it is best to flip that rig so that the bottom part of gpu faces upward and you put the fan at the bottom part of the gpu blowing upward as well. there's only one way heat escape from a reference blower card so this arrangement is most ideal.
