I think this must be the highest Alexa ranking site yet to cite bitcoin.

BTW you have a pm.

It was published right before the forum went down for a few hours haha.

Was it ?   It's certainly correlated, then.  The amount of new visitors blew up the bitcoin website.

Thanks for pointing it out.

This article is surprisingly balanced and accurate for a mainstream publication.

PC World is a big deal. I am psycheless. Time to restore the Wikipedia article.

It would have been nice to get this attention in any other context.  WikiLeaks has kicked the hornet's nest, and the swarm is headed towards us.

I tried to stop people from thinking that idea, but apparently words got to journalist faster than I can inform twittering users.

All that is left is to organize and mobilize some kind of defense.

MY LETTER TO THE AUTHOR OF THE ARTICLE:   ( <keir@keirthomas.com>  author of   goo.gl/n0UQt (http://goo.gl/n0UQt) )

I appreciate PC World finally doing an article about the most revolutionary and amazing new technology of the 21st Century so far --- Bitcoin.

However, this really is lazy journalism.

The article implies that Bitcoin was invented as a RESULT of Wikileaks troubles...  as sort of an altrernate SOLUTION to Wikileaks donation funding troubles.

That is NOT TRUE.

The truth is:  Most "Bitcoin.org Forum" members want no association with Wikileaks whatsoever.

The Creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi, has even made a public plea to Wikileaks NOT to accept donations via Bitcoin.

The truth is quite the opposite from the impression that this story leaves.

Most in the Bitcoin Community do NOT want Bitcoin to be associated with Wikileaks in any way.

Why are we scared of association with wikileaks? I hate wikileaks and its founder, but the currency is designed to persist in the face of institutional attempts to get rid of it. And wikileaks is in the news. So I hope they DO use it. They are a perfect candidate of an organization that should use bitcoin. If your business is legal, you're using paypal and accepting credit cards. We need to throw away this dream of bitcoin taking over paypal for the white market. I hope we get a good share of the white market, but the main usage of bitcoins will be in gray and black markets.

And whether the reader agrees with that prediction or not, there is no such thing as bad publicity in any case. This is definitely a good thing for bitcoin.

Let the public get mad about bitcoin.

Regarding the article, I do not think it misrepresents the goals of bitcoin. Its goal really is to be decentralized and unable to be taken down. It does not imply that wikileaks was the catalyst for its creation, but that it fits the bill.

Well, my effort to do so partly work. I got it enough so that people tell other people that wikileak accepting bitcoin is a bad idea at this stage in development.

The title is the only thing giving me that impression. "Could the Wikileaks Scandal Lead to New Virtual Currency?" implies Bitcoin was precipitated by the scandal, which is obviously not true even from the article since bitcoin has been around for more than a week or whatever.

It's all in the title of the article.

Many people only read the title of the article.

The article clearly linked Wikileaks to Bitcoin.

 And how are they linked?

In reality, they are not linked in any way.

@Shadow Thanks.  I host a talk show.  In fact, we'll be ramping it up to be broadcast on the internet soon.  I'll post to let you all know as soon as it's online.

I think the title was fine.  It any case, it wasn't "lazy journalism".

The journalist asked if the "wikileaks scandal could lead to a new currency".  This is a legitimate question, for the seizure of wikileaks's accounts revealed the NEED of a decentralised currency.  To put it simply, this affair is not linked to the creation of bitcoin, but to its upcoming notoriety.

And Bitcoin hits slashdot again (through this article):

Yes, and this time "Bitcoin" is sitting next to "Ron Paul" and "Wikileaks" in the article header.
So it is probably going to get hot soon.

True.  I'd say we may already see this as we can see an other surge for the keyword "bitcoin" in google trends :

If you change the graph to show only DEC 2010 it looks like we exceed a search index volume of 10. The previous slashdotting didn't get it quite that high.

The first slashdotting is higher than of the second slashdotting attempt.

Did you change the timline to DEC 2010? I think in the big graph it is getting averaged down and we won't see it on that one for another week or something.

I confirm. It is at least the same high, or higher.

Satoshi's second to last post, so this article scared him off? http://www.pcworld.com/article/213230/could_wikileaks_scandal_lead_to_new_virtual_currency.html

Bruce Wagner standing up for Bitcoin in the thread brings a tear to the eye, whatever happened to him? Only 1 post in a couple of years to pick up some free ripples - priceless  ;D

Sorry for bumping this old thread. I find this post of satoshi very intriguing. It is one of the few posts of him that is not about coding. If i interpreter this right we could say that we could throw away all the theories about bitcoin being secretly launched by some government. What are your thoughts?

edit: And indeed that he got scared because of this and backed off.

Doesn't follow logically as the only possible explanation.

I had seen this post before and had the following thought.

To maintain his anonymity he would want to bail out before the popularity would increase those trying to hack his anonymity methods.

I think your interpretation is spot on. In retrospect, Satoshi seems to have predicted something (even collectors) to start the increase of value. And he was obviously politically privacy-inclined.  But my guess is the speed with which WikiLeaks seems to have discovered Bitcoin startled him.

The problem with Wikileaks is that it draws the attention from the NSA and other organisations very keen to follow the trail of funding.

Privacy and anonymity is not 100% guaranteed and the increased surveillance is what made him disappear. I don't think he was in it for the $.

https://words.democracy.earth/follow-the-bitcoin-wikileaks-f2218dece347

It had the unfortunate effect of politicizing bitcoin. It may have led to more public exposure but also carried risks.

In July 2015, Wikileaks wallet was the target of what in Bitcoin lingo is called a “flood attack” or “dust attack”. The amount of dust for this huge attack was worth 30 BTC (or U$D 8,000 at the time).

It demonstrates the extend of what some people are prepared to do.

The thing is you cannot give any reply anymore because you might be scared of what happened with your creation.
We are not far to free our-self from values in fiat but this sounds a bit scary because everything resume to fiat currency.

All values goes in the balance of fiat ???
