Yes, lets hope that we never ever have to contemplate a world where that could happen. I truly hope we have learned something from the futility of the wars of the last century.

I too think this situation may not ever arise.

I think that China can win because it has a lot of population and they are constantly developing, in fact it can already be considered a superpower.

Nobody would win in a war like this. If the situation got that extreme to escalate to physical conflicts then you are talking about nuclear war. When those warheads get loose then China and America would wipe each other out, leaving the earth to cook in the aftermath.

No one knows, china has an advantage when it comes to number of military personnel and soldiers but we all know that U.S. has an advance military technology. I hope the time will not come that these 2 super military countries fight each other, human race might get extinct because of number of nuclear weapon they have.

I think a war between USA and China would be much more complex than that. In war it's very important who attacks first, the distance between the enemies, weapons production, food supplies, access roads (for example, China vs USA would most likely fight on the water and air). A land invasion would be unlikely since it would require so many men, transporters and supplies. And even if let's say one country would invade the other one it would be very costly to keep suppling those men.

Interesting topic. I would say the US. Not only because I am American but because there is multitude of factors that I would say the United States would win. A lot of people here cited China's population, however, strategically that is still not enough to win a war. Keep in mind that the US has alliances. If the United States decides to go to war, then Germany, France, Poland and the United Kingdom would follow. The United States is very capable of not only winning one war but two major wars. Just like everyone here is stating though, I do not hope nor wish for that to happen. War is a business but we as people have a lot to lose if we go into World War III.

Even though China has the highest population on the planet, and therefore has a higher military than the US, there is no chance that they can stand/win a war against the US. If the US has been known for being good at someting, it's pretty much war. They have the highest spending and most funds put into research and development (R&D) for combative technolgy, it's really nuts if you think about it. The US is by far the most advanced war machine on the planet, which is why the have the title of a "super power", if you noticed, there aren't many who want beef with the US because they can't afford it. That doesn't mean that China isn't doing something themselves, you might have heard of the disputes going on in the south china sea, China is basically defending that territory and it has displayed several time the navy and power they have over the region, but when America marches in then it's all good after.

Both have such powerful military ordinary at their disposal and the debate whether who's force is much powerful is still unsettled. For me personally I think US military technological warfare is very advanced combined with their nuclear arsenal they could annihilate a whole city at a push of a button. As for China, I do believe their military force greatest strength perhaps is their number, if we compare the sheer number of China's army, I think China could easily overpower US manpower arsenal; plus I think most of China's secret weaponry are still hidden from the public.

I thinked probably there's a chance China can defeat US, due to as you known now China has greatly expanded their military power.  For the example,  this year china has created their own battleship. And also China's rocket force now has 9 missiles including ballistic missiles.

Especially given that they now have these so-called hypersonic missile that can reach United States in less than 45 minutes.  Secondly, US Military is a little tired and perhaps stretched out a little too thin.  We also owe China a lot of money, and in case of the war, we might have the capital necessary to finance a prolong non-nuclear war.  Additionally, Chinese have their citizens everywhere, several millions in the US that will be sympathetic &  may support their motherland, but how many do we have in China?

Chinese within the US can't really do any significant damage even if they wanted to. And the US has been a superpower for a very long time now and had nuclear bombs way before China. It would be quite strange to assume that China would've overtaken their military. The US has been in decline for a while now thanks for ridiculous partisan and identity politics as well as victim culture. But their military is largely independent of that anyways and has a massive budget.

During history, China had been invaded many times, last one was by Japanese during mid thirties till end of WW2. But today and in regard to both country traditional arsenal, economic resources and social stability I would say both countries has similar chances of winning defensive wars on their home land, in short the offender will lose.

As a former 20 year veteran of the US armed forces I can say one thing with clarity. Yes we would. Our combined military could withstand a war at the same time with every other nation on earth, including Canada and Mexico. Let’s talk conventional war.

Number of troops: China has a 1 million man military, the US has about 300,000. Most of those national guard and reserve. So China could call up more troops faster than the US can. Although the US keeps an air borne division on call at all times and ready to be in a plane in 2 hours is something at least.

Sea technology: China has some good ships, good missles, but no real navy. China is using mostly Russian surplus that is outdated, although they update some of their military gear. The one working air craft carrier is a diesel powered design that the us rejected in the 1940’s. The US has several nuclear powered ships that can Level a small country. China has mostly diesel powered subs, the USonly uses nuclear power. While some Chinese subs are nasty, the US has some nasty hunter/killer subs that are ultra quiet.

Air defense (planes). China uses the MIG fighter jet. Fast, maneuverable, inexpensive and can carry some nasty hardware and can hold their own. The us primarily uses the F-15. Slower than the MIG, they carry high tech weapons that can even a fight out. Now with the introduction of the F-22 raptor stealth fighter the game changed. Light and fast, but not real maneuverable the raptor carries air to air, air to ground and smart bombs. They have a lower range than the MIG but can fire a middle at a ground target outside of the MIGsfuel range. The us also has armed drones that are controlled remotely. They scare the crap out of isis.

Air defense (ground) while China has a wide radar net over their country, it is outdated for the most part. With the US stealth technology they do not have the ability to really see them enough to get a radar lock. The UShas advanced radar technology as well as computerized missles. The US radar can reach farther out than the Chinese counterpart.

Troops technology: numbers aren’t everything in warfare, technology and training have a part in it. The basic loadout for a US troop is a weapon. 310 rounds of ammo (800 or more for heavy machine gunners) Kevlar/ceramic body armor that can stop an AK-47 round at point blank range and a Kevlar helmet. Over 1 million dollars in gear. The Chinese us only the AK-47 as personal weapons. The AK is the best assault rifle on the market. Cheap, easy to use and will work under any condition. They are wildly inaccurate while on full auto where the US M-4 uses a 3 round burst and can be tricky to get to fire in certain conditions like sand. The 7.62mm round of the AK-47 can hit harder and faster than their UScounterpart 5.56mm. Although the 5.56mm has more range and accuracy. While modifications are available for the AK, the M-4 has about 200 accessories you can use with it, from thermal vision to shotguns.

Troop training: the Chinese have a tough training program, YouTube it, than the US. To train a US soldier it takes usually 6-13 weeks and about $500,000 per person, it is basically on par with China. In China soldiers are trained to obey officers, the US the same but allow for independent thought if needed. Also US military officers start from the bottom up. China has given people the general rank as political favores, even if that person never served in the military before.

Armor and ground vehicles. Armored vehicles of both the US and China are on par with each other. The US armor just has a little more technology like the ability to control all the weapons from inside and in some cases remotely. The vehicles and light armor of the US and China are on par for the most part. Except for tanks. China uses Russian surplus tanks based off out M-50 production last used in the 1960’s, the US has the M1A1 Abrams. Able to hit a moving tank at 1 mile, at night, going 70 MPH over rough turain.

Nuclear technology.
China is the worlds 3rd largest nuclear power. They have the ability to strike the US, but not with accuracy Russia has. The US also has nuclear missles on subs always put in the ocean. Also the US always has one B-52 stealth bomber in the air with a full nuclear payload at any given time. 24/7. China could nuke some major cities, but the US could turn China into a radio active parking lot in a few hours.

Ability for a prolonged war: any other country I would say the US hands down, but not China. Our economies are so intertwined that it would be hard for the US to maintain a prolonged war, but not impossible. Where China would have Russia as an ally and suppling them, the US would have most of the rest of the world.

Ability for ground troops on each other’s soil. The US could get more troops onto Chinese soil faster, but would face obstacles like faced before. A lot of China is inaccessible in any easy manner allowing Chinese troops to hide in these mountain regions out of our reach. We learned that in Afghanistan. While the Chinese would have major roads to the vast majority of our country, they would be facing a population where the majority of Americans own firearms.

In conclusion. The war, without nukes, would be long but ultimately the US would win due to overwhelming technology. In a nuclear war the US might survive, but China would not.

Yes China can produce a ton of electronics and needed items, there is one problem with that. The Chinese government don’t own those factories, US companies do. So in a time of war those factories would be shut down and moved.

The fact that the government isn't spending as much on the military doesn't necessarily mean they are that much weaker. This means that they are creating a mass amount of weapons for other countries. In the case of a war, the government could probably just seize many more weapons that are being produced there.

China in the last decade has indeed grown really strong. But we must understand that warfare is more than just guns and bombs. The US is highly experienced in evasive warfare. They have a stealth way of manipulating allies and making things go their way. And this is where they cannot be underestimated. Even in the case of an all-out war, there are still great chances that US would win. I mean they still have the greatest military expenditure in the world. Even so by a wide margin.

If I would check their military capabilities based on "quantity over quality", neglecting their huge resources, I would say that China will win the war with the United States since it has large population to conscript their soldiers. As the history proves that the finest tactics in infantry is through mass human charge. If the basis is "quality over quantity", neglecting their huge resources, I would say that the United States will win the war since they have the modern and complex military programs, equipments, and troops. I think the days when you win a war on foot at long gone. I imagine one nuclear bomb could take out millions of soldiers. The Chinese can have 200 millions soldiers. That still won't help them that much if they don't have the equipment. Rifles aren't going to be able to take on bomber planes or rocket launchers. You have to be able to move them all around very quickly and it would be good if they all had some heavy equipment to work with. In terms of technology, I agree, it seems that the US is ahead.
