Let’s face it, today’s internet users are adept at ignoring ads of any kind on websites. Adblock and other ad blockers which can even block annoying YouTube video ads are gaining popularity. Naturally, because of this, ad revenues are lost, leaving web publishers without recourse.

This past weekend, Showtime websites were found to be running a similar script, as pointed out by users on Twitter. The sites included showtime.com and showtimeanytime.com

Is this a sign of things to come?

Although a lot of old hags would hate this idea, i think this would really work. Considering how big the porn industry is today, i really can't see why any project connected to adult contents fail. Maybe some can fail, but it would then be obviously the fault of the developers themselves.

Whichever site uses these browser miners are sure to have less traffic being directed to them and as a result will eventually lose out on the Alexa rank list. When users find out high CPU usage for just keeping a tab open, they will obviously not want their CPUs to overheat and will close the tab so these tactics are very lackluster. May it be torrent or porn sites, they will lose their main subscription revenue if they resort to use these mining plugins.

Weird. Porn sites require you to pump a large amount of videos. This loads the capacity of your computer. If at this point your PC will engage in mining then you will not be able to watch videos and will get very few coins. What's the point? I think it is easier to get coins when you don't use a PC and then calculated them for the entrance to the site.

wp mining is very burdening the performance of the cpu, you certainly would not be comfortable if watching an adult movie with your fan state sounded loud.

Moreover, as soon as browser mining goes mainstream, you'll get new browser extensions that block it. For example, that JS thing PirateBay used could be easily blocked by NoScript extension as well as any standard adblocker extension.

Honestly, it sounds surprising, I think it can really become commonplace in the future. Everyone wins! Users no annoying advertisements, chain the coins will be more stable and the sites will be able not worry about finding advertisers.

I feel it's a lot more consumer friendly and less obtrusive to have a website sustain its revenue on mining. If it becomes more profitable than advertising then there may be big changes, Though I only think this would be a symbiotic relationship for advertisers - If anything wouldn't a webmaster like to make money from Ads as well as Mining at the same time? The revenue from the mining alone would not be enough (it's around 10% of the revenue normally made with ads).

More intrusive to those that know what's going on. I see it taking hold along with ads for laymen who don't know what is going on and think that they can just go to any site and not have to deal with anything like this.

The revenue is much less than with ads, plus then they have the difficulties of picking which currency to mine and the market for that currency. That's why I think it's complementary to ads and is most likely going to affect sketchy websites that want to maximize revenue, so they'll keep the ads and just add this mining thing.

Very surprised to see Showtime sites running this script. Is there any way to get an "adblock" for mining scripts? I definitely don't want to contribute to this and give up my cpu power.

They would have to stick to CPU mining (can't clog up the GPU while streaming video), and they would have to throttle it to, say, 50-75% of CPU power so as to avoid rendering the browser unusable. Still, I'm sure someone will try this. It'll piss off customers, and is probably illegal if you don't get customer consent, but someone will try it.
