Read. EVERYTHING. Especially the whitepaper. Also, check if the coin and or the whitepaper is not just a direct ripoff of another cryptocurrency; oh yeah, and the team too. Check if they're actually real people and not just random names and random photos of other people.

What are the major sites? The official website of that certain cryptocurrency. Usually the subreddit, the Slack group, the GitHub repository, the official forum, etc of that certain cryptocurrency is linked in the official website.

I usually join the ICO’s slack and telegram to interact with the team, ask questions and read comments.

And I find the ANN threads in the alternate cryptocurrencies section to be resourceful. I am able to read about other members’ comments and views

Best way to research any coin is to get an abundance if information. Only after you have every aspect of information can you make an appropriate decision as whether you want to invest or not. There is no one major site

to help you gather all information, but a really good place to start is in the announcements sections here on bitcointalk. Do not hop into a coin on first glance, make sure you research, research, research first!
