Title: Easy list to buy the correct Riser and Gpu power adapter molex, sata,pciexpress
Post by: ocesco on October 06, 2017, 12:41:31 PM
Good morning,

I would like to create a easy list for anyone wants to buy the correct riser and correct power adapter
I studied a bit and this list need to be corrected, probably also a good part

Watt:
Riser = pciexpress on motherboard = max need 75 Watt (12v x 6,25A)
Molex max 132 Watt (12v x 11 A)
Sata power max 54 Watt (3 cables x (12V x 1,5A)) many doubts?????
Pciexpress connector power 6 pin 75 watt (12v x 6,25A)
Pciexpress connector power 8 pin 150 watt (12v x 12,5A)

Riser:
riser with molex connector is ok for all gpu
riser with pci express connector is ok for all gpu
riser with sata connector is ok only for low power gpu as 1050ti

Gpu Power adapter:

molex->pciexpress 6 pin ok
molex->pciexpress 8 pin (ok only for max of 132Watt)
2xmolex->pciexpress 6 pin ok
2xmolex->pciexpress 8 pin ok

sata->pciexpress 6 pin (ok only for max of 54Watt)
sata->pciexpress 8 pin (ok only for max of 54Watt)
2xsata->pciexpress 6 pin ok
2xsata->pciexpress 8 pin (ok only for max of 108Watt)

Pciexpress 6pin->Pciexpress 8pin (ok only for max of 75Watt)
2xPciexpress 6pin->Pciexpress 8pin ok
Pciexpress 6pin->2xPciexpress 6pin (only 37.5 watt fo cable  ????)

Pciexpress 8pin->2xPciexpress 6pin ok
Pciexpress 8pin->2xPciexpress 8pin (only 75 watt for cable ????)

The list need confirmation and correction of experts,

Have nice mining!!

what exactly do you mean with this:

riser with sata connector is ok only for low power gpu as 1050ti

I have RX VEGA 64 on ver 0007 sata risers, and I see no problem with this.

I wait opinion of people with more experience, but I have seen that sata power can do max 54 Watt, "pciexpress slot" need max 75 watt, there are 21 watt of difference

I have used the 2x Molex to 8/6 pin PCI-E and they work fine. I also use the 2x Sata to 6-pin PCI-E adapters to power risers. The problem with the Molex adapters is the quality is at best mediocre when new and they fall apart quickly after multiple uses. It's also important to never use more than two connectors per PSU strand MAX to avoid overloading the cable.

My advice would be to avoid using adapters in the first place by using a PSU with enough PCI-E connectors, or using a multiple PSU setup so that you have all the connections you need. I use 6-pin risers only, so if you have enough PCI-E connectors from your PSU, there is no need to use adapters. I do use and recommend PCI-E 8-pin to dual 6+2 pin splitter cables to power two risers from a single PCI-E cable, so you have enough connectors to power the top of the GPU's. I have also used the same spliiter cables to power the card and riser on some of my lower powered GPU's and to power cards that have an 8-pin and 6-pin VGA power input.

I use old equipment to the installation was cheaper. Motherboard supports only 4 GPU. My 8 GPU for additional power use server power supply. All other equipment uses a regular power supply 300 watt. I have no problems with powered risers SATA + Molex. More than 1.5 years, nothing out of order.

I'm not 100% sure, but i read somewhere in this forum that the riser does not consume more that 22 watts. So thats ok for sata powered raisers.
And recently i saw that there are new risers ver008c that consume lower energy than that - 5 watts.  And i actually ordered 10 of these to try them.

Most of the power your card need comes from the mine PCI Express cable that goes into your video card.

I have molex risers and also 6 pin raisers that i use with 6 pin to sata adapter. Never had any problems with them.

I think for majority, buy adapter because not have availability of pciexpress connector,
if the riser need 22 watts the sata connector is enough power;

instead what do you think about 2molex->pcie6pingpu and 2sata->pcie6pingpu ?

That is wrong. Powered risers use between 40W - 50 W each. This is easy to verify in a dual PSU setup like I have where all the risers are connected to the same PSU as the motherboard and the secondary PSU only powers the tops of the cards.

how much watt capable sata connector? Some model of riser have sata connector on board

Ouch, that's a big wattage. So one raiser has a power draws like 1/3 of a 1070.
I'm wondering if the draw is so huge why manufacturers make them with sata connectors? I'm sure they know what is the power limit of the sata connector.
Or maybe older ones with molex adapter draw that kind of power? What raisers do you use?

It's not the risers using the power, it's the GPU drawing 12V through the PCI-E slot. The PCI-E 3.0 specification allows up to 75 W at 12V through the x16 slot. The amount of +12 V and total power they may consume depends on the type of card, some cards pull more from the slot than others. The type of riser makes no difference in how much power the card draws from the riser. I like to use 6-pin risers which have three thicker wires that are designed to spread a higher 12V load compared to 2 for molex and sata connectors. They also use four capacitors instead of three and come with a voltage regulator to prevent spikes.
