Title: How I lost 95 Bitcoin
Post by: 56KbKid2 on October 09, 2017, 11:11:38 PM
I bought my first few Bitcoins in 2012; eventually I got around 100 and managed to hold most of them until this point. Yesterday they were stolen from me. Shortly after I made a transaction, I left my PC with Electrum open, I believe there was a key logger waiting for me to type my password as when I returned an hour later, I saw my account had been emptied.

This happened shortly after receiving my hardware wallet (ledger), which I never got round to filling up. Obviously storing £350k(that hurts to type) on my daily computer was a moronic thing to do.

See the transaction here: https://blockchain.info/tx/220caec53bac39cc1a2d2692eecd385bca796fc1a839254ddd622b911344ae97 (https://blockchain.info/tx/220caec53bac39cc1a2d2692eecd385bca796fc1a839254ddd622b911344ae97)

The Bitcoins were then split and are currently residing at these two addresses:
https://blockchain.info/address/18JCmLzKQoZydXspc6CPwovWVwYtUT7DCx
 (https://blockchain.info/address/18JCmLzKQoZydXspc6CPwovWVwYtUT7DCx)

I know I wont get these Bitcoins back but if anyone knows of a blockchain or malware analysis service or just want to give me advice, I would appreciate it.

Sorry for your losses, that sucks to hear.
Do you have any idea where the keylogger came from? Have you confirmed it was indeed a keylogger?

Oh fuck! That hurts. I can't imagine how you are feeling now, adrer loosing so many bitcoins.
Your sad story shows us again, that desktop wallets isn't safe if you catch malware.
I don't have idea, what I would if I loose so many bitcoins and sadly I can't give any advice to you. I just feel sorry about this disaster and wish you keep strong despite that...

I believe it's belong to Bitcoin discussion https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=1.0 or https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=6.0
If you want to hire some experienced people to trace your bitcoins, post a thread to share at least BTC5-BTC10 as the reward for everyone who can do it for you https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=52.0
It's strange as Ledger wallet should be safe, where did you bought it?
Second; I left my PC with Electrum open, are you sure no one using your PC right after you left it? I often do the same thing, but my bitcoin remain safe in electrum wallet.

:( Sorry for your loss mate. If I were you... I would try a full forensics on the computer to learn where the malware came from ..

there are several tools that maybe can help on that..

Also try to keep tracking your bitcoins .. I find this article that useful

Yes, that is a very sad situation, but could you tell if you had enough security on your computer to prevent hackers? Did you download anything suspect or accessed any strange site that could contain a malicious file, threat? This kind of event makes many people to fear Bitcoin investment, specially in big amounts.  :(

I am sorry for your loss, If I had this amount of bitcoin I will never connect my pc to internet, You can sign a transaction offline, then find some other way to broadcast that. I know it's not convenient method but better than losing ur bitcoin.

I am sorry to hear you story, it is quite a huge amount and I agree that you should hire people to trace and know who own these addresses.  Many people will gladly do the job for you at around 10% of the lost BTC.  I wonder how could that ledger be infected and I have been using electrum for a year now and no such instance happened to me.  I know it is quite hard to recover the BTC but thank you for sharing this story to us since we will be more vigilant in downloading any apps online.

I'm so sorry for you but this will teach you something. Security is the most important thing when managing coins (FIAT or crypto doesn't mind).

You should now prevent that those thing will happen again.

Title: Re: How I lost 95 Bitcoin

Blockchain analysis can easily be done yourself, but the problem is that even if you find the address in which your bitcoin are stored, you won't be able to get them. I doubt, even if a mixer comes forward to prove ownership of the addresses, it's unlikely they would give such a large sum of money to you.

I know what I say won't be able to fix your situation in the slightest, but security is always #1 when it comes to user-held assets like bitcoin. Your ledger should have been loaded as soon as it arrived. You probably should have bought a Trezor when it first came out, too.

Wow. That's huge amount mate. You should have use hardware wallet because the amount is so huge. This is a serious money mate. You should not keep them that way. You should have use anti-keyloggers and effective anti-virus. So your computer cannot easily infected with virus. Even an expert don't recommend computers to store huge amounts device which can easily access by hackers. Electrum is a good wallet though. It's just your computer is the problem. Better format your computer to avoid another loss. Sorry about your loss. But i don't think you will recover them. Hackers already received them.

It hurts just reading about it, I feel for you. Do you have any idea on how did you get the malware? I see that a lot of people also have this question. That's like a nightmare that could happen to anyone. Also, I'm guessing you didn't had 2FA authentication enabled on your wallet? I'm just trying to further understand how these situations could be avoided.

Again, I'm really sorry for your loss. It sucks.

Could the OP, or someone knowledgeable on this type of situation, speculate on the ACTUAL mechanism of this attack? What did the OP actually do, that gave away his private key? Was it stolen from the computer's clip board (copy/paste?)

Knowing HOW this kind of stuff happens will make it easier for other people to be more secure.
Thanks

I don't know if there is a way for you to get back your coins but don't give up. It is quite a significant amount and I hope someone can help you getting it back if possible.

Really sorry to learn of your loss.  I hope you are able to determine the attack vector.  If it has the characteristics of a vulnerability that could be wider-spread, please consider sharing details with the community so that all can take precautions.

Just goes to show that you always need to keep your guard up, especially with that amount of Bitcoin.  Horrible way to be reminded of this.

I hope you are somehow able to recover them.  Very difficult, but there are some outstanding experts among us on this forum -- some of the very best in the world, they may be able to assist.

The stolen 95 bitcoins represent a huge amount. Of course, it is unreasonable to leave the computer unattended in a working state and with open access for outsiders. Maybe. someone took advantage of this. Sad story.

what? 95 bitcoins is a big big value of money now.. im sorry for your lost. Where is the place of your last login before the keylogging happen? Im hoping that someone help you with this, even though it will be hard to get it back at least you will have to know who made this keylogger or who put this keylogger. We have to be cautious at all times.

Title: Re: How I lost 95 Bitcoin

That must have been very hard. Since you say it was stored in electrum and you suspect a keylogger to have stolen the electrum password, still whoever stole your btc must have had physical contact your computer. If its your personal computer then it shouldn't be too hard to find out who all had access to your PC(assuming there was no break-in or any 3rd-party accessing it).

It is impossible to know since the OP does not give too much information, the most likely thing that happened is that he had installed the electrum wallet in an insecure OS like windows and then he download some pirated software or something that infected his computer with a key logger and then when something interested was typed the key logger called back home to alert the hacker and he stole all the money.

May this will make a lesson for everybody that read this story out. It suck to lose all hardwork money just for nothing. Make sure to always on your antivirus to the max. That surely is a very big amount of BTC you lost. You must be really sorry for your loss. That's the reason why I don't keep my coins on a desktop.
Desktops are vulnerable and a bit easier to hack than smartphones. I keep my wallet secure on android as it is tough to inject keyloggers on linux based OS. The only thing you can do now is learn from your mistakes. I wish you good luck and a bright future ahead.

This would be a lesson to all of us that every time we log our account in other computer make sure that before we left it was already log off for our safety.
Hoping that you will recover it or you will get much more than of that amount, i think GOD will challenge you how you handle that situation.

It's strange as Ledger wallet should be safe, where did you bought it?

The OP never got his Bitcoin into the Ledger. He had just bought a Ledger but hadn't funded it yet.

95 bitcoin equivalent $45,000.  this is huge with me, hope you will soon get back your money

Try that math again. 95 Bitcoin is equivalent to $450,000.

Could the OP, or someone knowledgeable on this type of situation, speculate on the ACTUAL mechanism of this attack? What did the OP actually do, that gave away his private key? Was it stolen from the computer's clip board (copy/paste?)
It is impossible to know since the OP does not give too much information.
The OP has to have an idea where his behavior went reckless, as far as the security and safety of his bitcoin is concerned.

What questionable link did you click on? What "BITCOIN LIVES HERE" sign were you waving from your PC?

How did you become the target?

I think the best place of evidence you could find is the actual network blockchain transaction for your 95 Bitcoins. If you could somehow track that then you may be able to trace the movement of your BTC.

It definitely sucks to have lost your Bitcoins, but that is part of the security within Bitcoin. It would be tough to secure Bitcoins if they were easy to store and access. That is part of the magic of Bitcoin and the blockchain, and also the vulnerability of it.

My only suggestion would be to store your Bitcoins in a more secure wallet such as either a cold wallet or a super secure cloud/cold wallet combination like one that Regal Assets (http://www.regalwallets.com) offers. Wish you the best of luck in your Bitcoin journey bro.

Is there any reason that you may have been targeted specifically? Did you tell anyone about the balance you were holding?

Well, simply having 95 bitcoins makes you a target. Many hackers identify specific targets and monitor them for weeks. < trying to find a weakness or a way they could exploit the owner of those coins> The opportunity presented it self, when OP left his wallet open. The hacker did not even have to have his login credentials, because he was signed in and he left his computer unattended.

The hacker used some remote software to transfer the bitcoins to his address and it was gone.

I never keep such large amounts of coins in a wallet for this same reason. I have loads of paper wallets with small amounts. When I need coins, I just sweep a paper wallet. Advice to OP --->< remember to keep it, because you might have some Bitcoin Cash >

What the hell? Is there any particular reason you think you got keylogged? How would a keylogger infiltrate your system in the first place? Where exactly did you leave your computer running? I feel for you man. I don't know your financial status, but losing that much money would hurt no matter what. Hi I am sorry  for your loss, I can understand your fellings now but first don't panic...
You have left your laptop open ... in a public place? anyone physical could access to your electrum wallet?
Did you run any antivirus scan in your system to check in you have actually a keylogger installed in your pc? Have you tried to setup a 2FA with your phone? the only critic or flawless point is not use a cold wallet.
When I have stored a private key with a secure system I have also add a password just to secure anymore the priv. key.

I agree with you. Sometimes people tend to neglect to take preventive measures which make them an easy target by the hackers. I hope that other people will not experience this circumstance before taking time to secure their coins. It's painful that we have to be a victim first before taking precautions that will totally cause devastation to us. No matter how little or huge the amount of our coins the first thing we should keep in mind is security so that in the end we will not regret anything. We worked hard to earn those coins so we shoukd also work hard to keep them safe.

I bought my first few Bitcoins in 2012; eventually I got around 100 and managed to hold most of them until this point. Yesterday they were stolen from me. Shortly after I made a transaction, I left my PC with Electrum open, I believe there was a key logger waiting for me to type my password as when I returned an hour later, I saw my account had been emptied.

This happened shortly after receiving my hardware wallet (ledger), which I never got round to filling up. Obviously storing £350k(that hurts to type) on my daily computer was a moronic thing to do.

See the transaction here: https://blockchain.info/tx/220caec53bac39cc1a2d2692eecd385bca796fc1a839254ddd622b911344ae97 (https://blockchain.info/tx/220caec53bac39cc1a2d2692eecd385bca796fc1a839254ddd622b911344ae97)

The Bitcoins were then split and are currently residing at these two addresses:
https://blockchain.info/address/18JCmLzKQoZydXspc6CPwovWVwYtUT7DCx
 (https://blockchain.info/address/18JCmLzKQoZydXspc6CPwovWVwYtUT7DCx)https://blockchain.info/address/18ZnbD5JQwdEJRwKrb34nXPu7J6pHN1CMR
 (https://blockchain.info/address/18ZnbD5JQwdEJRwKrb34nXPu7J6pHN1CMR)
I know I wont get these Bitcoins back but if anyone knows of a blockchain or malware analysis service or just want to give me advice, I would appreciate it.

You did well to manage the bitcoins up to this point but that is where your error consists. I would not blame you if your bitcoins were lost in 2012 or 2013 as at that time not a lot of possibilities to safeguard them properly but soon after that when  Trezor and Ledger wallet you should have definitely upgraded to such wallet. I am sorry for your loss but nothing you can do except go on and start even stronger with the best security measures from now on.

REQUEST

Could the OP, or someone knowledgeable on this type of situation, speculate on the ACTUAL mechanism of this attack? What did the OP actually do, that gave away his private key? Was it stolen from the computer's clip board (copy/paste?)

Knowing HOW this kind of stuff happens will make it easier for other people to be more secure.
Thanks

I'm still investigating, I'll update when I find the exact mechanism.

I've also just realised that the attacker took 120 Litecoin from me on the 22nd of September, so my computer had been compromised for at least 18 days.

too many question in my head when i read the story.

1. did he scan his computer he realize that his bitcoin is empty in the wallet?
2. if he have 95 bitcoin in the wallet, why he don't move the bitcoin into hardware wallet?
3. he know that bitcoin is connected with internet, did he turn off the internet connection when he opened his wallet and only turn on the connection when he want to send to another wallet?
4. i think there are any logs in the wallet or at least any note about what he is doing in that day or in a weeks.

geez, its really sad story. with 95 bitcoin, i am sure that he is the richest person in his city and he can buy every thing he wants. make this as lesson to us so we can be careful when we have big amount bitcoin in our wallet.

Ouch man, that's shocking, 100 BTC hurts in anyone's book. You seriously need to speak to a lawyer and go to the authorities, at least for the formality of making a report. PS: These things are usually not random.. Unfortunately, most likely its someone you know.

The lesson for everyone else is: Any more than a couple thousand bucks in coins MUST be kept on a Ledger/Trezor.
And DONT use the same computer for Bitcoin wallets as you do for downloading torrents etc.. Too many people have been burnt this way.
Also do malware scans everyday. I use iObit Advanced System Care and iObit Malware Fighter and these have kept my computers clean for years, highly recommended!

I hope you get to the bottom of this  :'(

If the story is true, you should contact law enforcement. They could do forensics and issue supoenas to ISP's etc. A lawyer would be a good idea too.

Absolutely!

This is far too large a sum of money to not fight to the death over. Somebody needs to follow the trail & see if possible, where these bitcoin are sold.

OP do you download many files or programmes on your PC? I’m trying to wonder where you would have picked up this virus/malware.

That's such a huge amount to loose but I was wondering how'd it happened when Ledger or any type of hardware wallet should supposedly be safe to use from. I wish you could get to the bottom of what really happened though, hopefully you'll earn back the money you lost too.

Wow! That hurts to even read!!

I would suggest you make a police complaint so that, if incase in future, the keylogger is traced back to an entity, you will proof with a police complaint that the hacker owns 95BTC of yours.

Other than that, you can only try to find the source of the keylogger, where you got it from to begin with. That give you clues about who or where the hackers are from.

I feel for you. I've only ever lost Bitcoin through bad investments so far, but have had a few people try and send various different malicious code to me through the years. But, this is why I've always sworn by paper wallets. Keeping a offline copy which was created on a offline computer and stored in a safe location is the best way for me to make sure everything is secure.

Obviously, I know for some people who need constant access it's much easier to store their wallet on their personal computer. But, if you are going to do that then it's best to keep very small amounts in different wallets and different computers if possible.

That is the worst case scenario for a bitcoin user who is holding bitcoin for long term and it is clear that we need more and more security for our computers so we can make sure that the viruses or any malwares will not get into our system or computer. It is better also to have a hardware wallet for keeping bitcoin because that is the simplest and safest way to keep bitcoin for me.

I don't use hardware store. It seems to me that my bitcoins safer if they are stored in the electronic wallet. But I have never had 100 bitcoins. I know a few people who have a huge amount of bitcoins. They keep their codes on paper in a safe. PC very unreliable place to store such a lot of money. It's not even just that there can easily be infiltrated by hackers. What to do if your PC will be infected with such virus as Petya?

This must clearly be an inside job, Someone knew you had the bitcoins and the person schemed to steal it. If you let other people use your personal computer then you should look into them. No one will install a keylogger on a PC jut like that unless he knew there was something he wanted to steal.

This is a terribly big loss of BTC(if it is true) and warning to all users that we can at any time stay without our coins if we do not take the maximum possible safety measures. There are people who only try to find ways how to steal something and get easy money.Steal BTC or any other cryptocurrency is it becomes increasingly popular because of the ways in which traces can be hidden.I bet that these thieves are everywhere, even on this forum, and they use all available methods to find potential victims.I hope people will start to worry more about security and how to keep coins safe.

You cannot do anything now. They are gone and it is over. Even if you find how your bitcoin were stolen and by who you cannot prove that. Also you cant go to the police since bitcoin is anonymous and there is no way to prove that you owned that 95 bitcoins.
You have to think about every possible person who knew that you have 95 bitcoins in your wallet. Did you posted somewhere on the internet? Did you told your friends? Did you posted anything on the internet that can lead a hacker to you? If you are absolutely sure none of this happened ,it could be an inside job but there is a very small chance for that

For you to have been involved in Bitcoin this long, you should be quite adept at protecting yourself online. Now that's just a bummer dude! I could just imagine how you felt..I mean that's just a load of money lost! A lot! If that had happened to me I just don't know what I would have done! Yes there is very little chance of you retrieving your bitcoin, but no harm in trying to find ways right? Do try. Even just a glimpse of chance still means hope.  :)

Say goodbye to your bitcoins. Its easier to prevent something to happen, I say that cause one newbie is coming here to complain after losing coins, where were you until now?
I don't believe that he had this bitcoins in his possession in the first place, in all this time here I saw many similar threads and what we need to do know, to solve his problem?
One more imaginary thread on this forum, moderators need to make one more section for this kind of topics, same as when newbies complain on casinos and how some casino took money from them.

I hope you can recover them in a way but as much as I read it is impossible...
I wouldn't say that it's impossible, just very difficult.

It can't hurt to file a police report and if you're lucky, the creators of the malware might get arrested in the next few months or years and he might be able to get his coins back.

Why wouldn't he be able to prove it? He has access to the private keys of the address that held the coins before they were stolen.
Looking at the rest of your post, you haven't read that they got stolen because he had installed a keylogger.

That's rather unfortunate to hear that, the amount of such BTC could be enough for the rest of your living.

Is there anyway to prevent or knowing that your session have been compromised? some sort of malware detector?

As I've said before, hopefully this will serve as a lesson for readers to be mindful of computer security and take preventive measures. This post will definitely help steer people to be more cautious. There is a tendency to underestimate the capabilities of hackers.
I have being hearing these sort of losses for a very long time and it is still happening ,i am really sorry for the loss and nothing can be done to recover your coins unless you file a complaint and send the copy to each and every exchange out there so that if the hackers try to move the coins you could catch them and get your coins returned and that is the only hope you can have right now.

it's another scam. Dont fall for this BS

remove '1NndjYLXPgHmSFYEk5exCabGbcynzqpii4  ' from the signature and it's valid.. I just tried on that website.

When I login with my original account (56kbkid), I get the message:
'Your account is locked because it sat inactive for years after the password hashes were leaked in 2015, and was therefore at high risk of being hacked. Email react-vdnp8@theymos.e4ward.com to get it unlocked.'

Why would I remove "your" wallet address? That is the whole purpose of signing messages! That you prove that you own that address. But obviously you dont own it, so you didn't loose any coins. You are just trying to scam! Unbelieveable how many in here is falling for your claims

It's possible the criminal won't hide their IP address and/or moves the balance to a wallet service that can be identified. Only takes one mistake for scammers to be revealed forever.

That's crazy thing to know about man. I'm sure there is someone related to you is involved in this because first question that struck to my mind is that's your personal pc and how can an outsider get so closer to that unless and until they get hands on it before. Or there could be chances you have downloaded the malicious software from somewhere and it's been always tracking your pc. But anyway now the bitcoins are long gone mate, you can track them but you can't tell anyone that they are yours as you yourself sent it and can't reclaim them. There is no other way but to hack the opposite party but it seems highly impossible. Sorry for your loss! Hope someone pops in here with some hope.

Realk talk though, if you treated your btc like real funds. If it was important to you, you should've honestly taken the nessasry steps to protect your btc. You did not take the nessasry steps to protect your btc as if it was valuable to you, resulting in this situation you are in now.

For everyone else, always use a hardware wallet, btc is not just a token or coin from a game on your phone or pc.

That's such a huge amount and I feel devastated for your loss. Even to just lose 1 BTC would be terrifying for me, I would probably go ballistic if I lost 95 BTC. Not having any experience in holding that huge an amount of bitcoin, I'm not sure how to advise on the manner of dividing and use of offline or paper wallets but it was probably wise for you to put it in separate wallets.

I hope that the proper authorities can help you recover the coins that you've lost and put them to justice. Whether the suspect is someone close to you or not, they should be prosecuted for such acts.

I bought my first few Bitcoins in 2012; eventually I got around 100 and managed to hold most of them until this point. Yesterday they were stolen from me. Shortly after I made a transaction, I left my PC with Electrum open, I believe there was a key logger waiting for me to type my password as when I returned an hour later, I saw my account had been emptied.

This happened shortly after receiving my hardware wallet (ledger), which I never got round to filling up. Obviously storing £350k(that hurts to type) on my daily computer was a moronic thing to do.

See the transaction here: https://blockchain.info/tx/220caec53bac39cc1a2d2692eecd385bca796fc1a839254ddd622b911344ae97 (https://blockchain.info/tx/220caec53bac39cc1a2d2692eecd385bca796fc1a839254ddd622b911344ae97)

The Bitcoins were then split and are currently residing at these two addresses:
https://blockchain.info/address/18JCmLzKQoZydXspc6CPwovWVwYtUT7DCx

I know I wont get these Bitcoins back but if anyone knows of a blockchain or malware analysis service or just want to give me advice, I would appreciate it.

This sucks man. It is not your fault at the end of the day. There are always going to be scammers who try to steal - and do figure out ways to steal from people. It does not mean that it is your fault.

HOWEVER, it is your responsibility to keep them safe. There is a big difference. Knowing the environment of Bitcoin currently, you should be more careful with how you store them. Paper wallets are the best because there is no way for a 3rd party to infiltrate you, or no easy way anyways.

Sorry for your losses. I hope you will re-earn them in future. My suggestions to prevent this in future would be:

1. Always have 2 factor authentication enabled on your exchange accounts. I am not sure if that works with online wallets, but if not then don't store high value in online wallets

2. Use password manager. With that you don't type passwords so they can't be captured with keystrokes. I cannot say for sure if they can be stolen from
clipboard or something. I have been using lastpass but there are others well

3. Don't share your online wallet/exchange balance with anyone. There will be high likely hood of social engineering attack. Read this https://medium.com/@CodyBrown/how-to-lose-8k-worth-of-bitcoin-in-15-minutes-with-verizon-and-coinbase-com-ba75fb8d0bac

@OP hopefully that was not all of your bitcoins and only 1 of your wallets. Its wise to split your coins not put more than 10btc into any wallet whether online or offline.
1. check who had/has access to your computer and sus them out. This is the most basic possibility and probably the most unlikely. Did you tell anyone how many coins you have IRL or online?
2. if its a hack, find and isolate the logger or malware, check its install date and determine the moment you were intruded upon. You may be able to help others if you can determine exactly where/when this occurred.

I'll keep an eye on the wallet with the 94btc lets see what comes of it.

3. send a msg to the most known mixers with a list of addresses (as they develop) to keep an eye on your coins. You never know, they just might give a fuck. Besides if they knowingly mix stolen funds, they then may have to answer that action if you want to pursue it.

4. yes, you almost certainly wont get your coins back, BUT there is a few things you can do and lets be honest, 95btc is worth pursuing and not giving up totally.

Don't lose your heart. I just hope that the thief will be caught and prosecuted. Since he had used a key-logger to get your password, a physical presence is needed. What you need to do is to file a police complaint first. And don't get depressed. Since the physical presence is needed, there is a chance that the thief can get identified from the cctv footage.

Sorry for the lost but This is a example of users who did not do some safety measures before doing transactions that amount is huge so maybe you can do a split account if you got that much bitcoin distribute to three or more different account to prevent this kind of lost. Lesson learned hope you can recover for that lost.

Oh man, that is a painful situation and I am sorry to hear you went thru that tremendous loss! Let this serve as a reminder to all of us to be vigilant on our security.

I think keyloggers are the most serious of threats when it comes to cryptocurrency. Anything a keylogger can portal thru (such as teamviewer, filesharing, emails, in the form of Trojans and worms) puts your computer and coins at serious risk.

Here is a handy article I found with recommendations for anti-keylogger and rootkit removal:

https://www.geckoandfly.com/17960/anti-keylogger-rootkit-detection-and-removal-for-undetectable-spyware-computer-surveillance-malware/

Unfortunately, in the world of crypto, we are most vulnerable as there is no way to recover funds in anonymous transactions.

I suggest to go for a weekend retreat or mini-vacation and remove yourself from the situation for a while. You will go thru the grieving process and it is important to practice self-care so you can make it thru this difficult time.

I bought my first few Bitcoins in 2012; eventually I got around 100 and managed to hold most of them until this point. Yesterday they were stolen from me. Shortly after I made a transaction, I left my PC with Electrum open, I believe there was a key logger waiting for me to type my password as when I returned an hour later, I saw my account had been emptied.

This happened shortly after receiving my hardware wallet (ledger), which I never got round to filling up. Obviously storing £350k(that hurts to type) on my daily computer was a moronic thing to do.

See the transaction here: https://blockchain.info/tx/220caec53bac39cc1a2d2692eecd385bca796fc1a839254ddd622b911344ae97 (https://blockchain.info/tx/220caec53bac39cc1a2d2692eecd385bca796fc1a839254ddd622b911344ae97)

The Bitcoins were then split and are currently residing at these two addresses:
https://blockchain.info/address/18JCmLzKQoZydXspc6CPwovWVwYtUT7DCx

I know I wont get these Bitcoins back but if anyone knows of a blockchain or malware analysis service or just want to give me advice, I would appreciate it.

ninety five bitcoin is such a huge money, i'm sorry for your lost computer is not advisable to store a huge amount of money unless you have a security on that, do you join on any suspicious website that cause of your lost? is someone know your password or someone use your computer theres a lot of hackers now specially if they know that you have a huge of money store on your wallet better have a security bro to avoid loss of money once again.

please please please, do not listen to people who claim to be "expert hackers" because they have no idea what an hacker is.. you can show your task manager and we can check if there's any fishy background process but usually are encapsulated into a "legit" .exe so is not that easy.
Feel free to send me a PM and i can give you some links about some solid tools to check if and how your pc is infected (and i can help you for free, not doing it for your bounty).

Once you lose your bitcoin then it is already a loss and you cannot track it because it is impossible to track down a bitcoin address or even the bitcoin itself. The lesson here is to have a great foundation of security of your wallet and bitcoin so you can have more security and you will feel a comfortable life within your bitcoin world. Build security at the same time with your wealth to balance things.

Almost 5 years of holding it and this happens, losing 95 BTC and 120+ LTC is so devastating in your part and with that I can't do anything but let me ask some question that only you can answer to help those other electrum users also just like myself, and other Bitcoin holders that holds theirs with their private keys.

- How many times are you opening your Electrum wallet and LTC wallet in a week or day before it was hacked?
- Beside you who other people got an access into your personal computer?
- Did you open your Electrum wallet to some other computers within those 5 years?
- Did you save your private key online(email, facebook)
- After all those years in cryptocurrency and storing a huge amount of it in a long term why is it the hacker only attacks now?

Maybe you just so confident that you will never be hack but please share some of your possible wrong doings that made before it was done.

I feel sorry for you loss.

My simple advise what you can do by yourself first.

- Perform full malware scan with some solid antivirus software (AV Tests can be helpful here to find solid one)
- Check what incoming/outcoming network connections are established on your system (Firewall software can be helpful here)

Perhaps your computer is infected with some malware and you may able to detect the root.

Wish you good luck!

Blockchain.info is receiving negative propaganda because is an online wallet but the security measures are strong and IMO is the best option if you are not an expert or you don't want to spend money on a hardware wallet.

We are sorry about your loss but you should have bought a hardware wallet earlier. Why didn't you buy Ledger earlier? Did you forgot about how many bitcoins do you have? We can't do much about keyloggers. There would be no problem if you used a hardware wallet or some anti-malware software which would block such threat.

Sorry for your loss that's a lot, I thought this thread is way back years ago but no it's new. So your bitcoins has been passed through different address and find the 50 bitcoins is on this address https://blockchain.info/address/18ZnbD5JQwdEJRwKrb34nXPu7J6pHN1CMR and the other amount is on this wallet https://blockchain.info/address/16YiXuw4eaFVvpyhX7mYufwsj77LHrydUx it has 44 bitcoin so there are some additions. And that means that your coins are stored and not yet being sold. Why question is that why you had left your electrum wallet open? for sure someone is trying to monitor your PC, better to store your wallet in an offline desktop wallet.

It is stuff like this that people with a vested interest in seeing BTC fail will jump on. It doesn't happen often but it happens often enough that it is a perceived problem which will be exploited. Finding ways to make the ecosystem more secure in these situations should be important.

That not sweet man, that's surely a lot of bitcoins I never got 90 bitcoins in total but if that will happen to me even just for 1-2 bitcoins that will put me in a nightmare. I'm sorry for your loss man but even how big the reward you'll be doing we know that bitcoin transactions can't be recovered that way unless that hacker will return it to you. You can just simply recover it again if you'll try to earn it somewhere like in trading or any source that's legit which will give you good profit. But still if it will be recovered, I hope it will.

Id like to know how such occurrences can be prevented considering i'm a newbie; How does one know there's a keylogger malware in his system and what are the possible ways to counter it.
I'm really sorry for your loss.

You can sign your transactions offline. I have an offline laptop dedicated to this and I sleep well at night knowing that no piece of advanced malware will be able to sweep my private keys, since they never even touch my online computer.

i always do a secure erase before putting and moving my cold storage on my desktop, so you are sure that your pc is clean, maybe could be a bit overkill but with bitcoin you never know
If you want to have a cold storage for your bitcoin then it is not about the storage in pc because it is still risky because your pc is connected in the internet and the best thing to do is to have an offline wallet like paper wallets and hardware wallets that will secure your bitcoin well because they are not connected to internet so the hackers cannot access it but you only.

This is not the first tragic story I have heard since when the bitcoins became popular. It is so sad to think that whenever there is money, there are also thieves. To prevent this from happening again, I advise to everyone to use offline wallets. Your personal computers are prone to mischief like keylogger. You should also be aware of the things you download and the programs that are installed in your computer.

Sorry to hear your lost.  It is such nerve racking considering that you lost that very huge amount of bitcoin.  1btc is really high in value and you lost 95 of it.  You must be really rich by that.  It would be hard to trace where it goes.  Let just karma hunt that culprit.

That 95 Bitcoin that was very big the hacker that stole your Bitcoin are now Enjoying their life with your money. I don't know how'd you get the keylogger but always make sure that if you have lots of Bitcoin 1 Bitcoin or above make sure that your PC/Mobile Phone or any devices you are using for your coins are CLEAN, FRESHLY FORMAT and NO SOFTWARE DOWNLOADED besides the Bitcoin wallet that you have. That's what i've been doing i have an DELL Laptop i don't have downloaded programs on that only the Bitcoin Wallet.
Personally I think that if a person holds one or more bitcoin that person needs to have a trezor or a paper wallet, maybe we do not think of one bitcoin as a lot of money but one bitcoin is enough to live for the whole year in some poor countries so it is obvious cyber criminals will want to steal it.

That was a large ammount of bitcoin you have and it made you as a target of some hackers.Have you already checked if there's really a keylogger?Try using some antivirus as it really tracks if you have one.You also should've seperated your bitcoins into different wallets so that if you loss one you will stil have some.

You should now prevent that those thing will happen again.
I'm sorry it happened and we do not want to lose like that, be careful and always close our account is the best thing besides using a password that is difficult to secure our account

What a horror story! Never underestimate security of online accounts speciallay if they are related to cryptocurrencies. I never hold big amounts in exchanges or online wallets. Always do your research and transfer your earnings to paper or harware wallets and dont forget to activate 2fa on your exchange accounts.

Putting some big amounts of bitcoin in your exchange accounts is the worst decision that you can make because it will not help you to secure your money or bitcoin because you are already risking it and you are like baiting the hackers to be more interested in exchange because exchanges are very attractive to hackers because they can hack through it and stole the bitcoins and other coins there and if you are greedy and not conservative about your bitcoin then you might regret it because even the people who have 2fa's in their account can still be hacked if the hackers will bypass the security.

There is a God in this world. God sees them all. I'm not a religious person, but I can tell you that if you worked for the 95 bitcoins that you lost, someone will return you these bitcoins one day. All the money that you lost, some day someone will give them to you. This is how this world works, there is no loose without a compensation.  Some day in the coming days, you will get all your lost bitcoins returned.

Hmm I do not thing this is a hacker or a keylogger , Because simply if it was then why they did not hack you before ! You have been keeping this since 2012 and if this transaction you made was your first , Then how can anyone know you had coins in first place , Unless someone really close to you !! My advice look close and search who can reach to your pc when you left it open and you might find your coins

Feeling very sad for what happened to you.You held them from 2012.That is great. It is better suggested that keep your bitcoins in a separate hardware. If you want to keep on a desktop wallet, it is better to have an anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-logger softwares.
I think it is impossible to revert crypto transactions.

Im shocked why people keep using just one computer to store and acess their funds and use it for the daily things, we know that internet has becamed a hard way to keep protected, the last hackers attack did exposed the issues at some old software, soo my advice is use different computers to acess your portfolio and to make your things.
Its 100 bitcoin its a huge ammount to let your computer be used by anyone eles besides you, as well you took the risks using those computer for all, with such ammount you should had bought a computer just to acess your coins nothing eles.

I don't know. Even that can have problems, maybe it's stolen, maybe it breaks, maybe someone somehow find an exploit
That's a problem for mass adoption of bitcoin
Maybe diversify after a point, have wallets on pc, hardware wallets, paper wallets, each one with part of your money

I understand the OP should have been more careful with that sum of money but it does not sound like his security was decent and wasn’t doing anything outrages on his PC. This just shows the importance off keeping your coins offline. Unfortunately any thing included ledgers and exchanges are potential targets. If you are not planning on using your funds simply make a paper wallet on a device not connected to the internet and your coins should be secure

Sorry for your losses, that sucks to hear.
Do you have any idea where the keylogger came from? Have you confirmed it was indeed a keylogger?

Thats too painful too read, it ripped my dream to have that certain amount of money, I feel threatened that in a blink of an eyw I might lose all the hardwork that I have been working for, and I think no one deserves that, but we should consider the fact that this is a digital system where in hacker are tend to roam around for some meat to eat, and it sucks, you dont do such thing but someone might do that? Thats pretty awful how unfair life is. You can do it! Keep working.

Oh God! More than half a million USD worth of Bitcoin lost. Are you sure that it was a keylogger? I am confused. How did they managed to install the keylogger in your desktop? Or are you using a computer in a public place such as library or college? It was much better to purchase a hardware wallet such as Trezor and Ledger and keep the coins in them. It is gone forever since those bitcoins are being splitted for how many time which would really make for it to be traced so hard it does really suck knowing 100 bitcoin is really a big money and just vanished on an instant by just leaving your electrum and i do suspect it was really a keylogger which they did able to know your password or even remote your pc to transfer those bitcoins.

An antivirus is not enough you need to take a lot more precautions like that especially since we are talking about so much money, you need to only install stuff you trust, not torrents and pirated stuff, in fact I will avoid windows completely with that huge amount of money.

Shortly after I made a transaction, I left my PC with Electrum open, I believe there was a key logger waiting for me to type my password as when I returned an hour later, I saw my account had been emptied......

There are other possibilities.

A) you had downloaded, unwittingly an infected copy of Electrum
B) someone walked by your computer, saw the open program and took what they saw

not sure if any keylogger can capture copy & paste text, probably some open shared drive give way for the attacker to download the private key

Anyway... don't lose heart.

Probably downloaded something suspicious to visited a website with javascript enabled. It's so easily done but so easily avoided at the same time.

Even I have java script enabled in my browser. Is it that much of an issue? Without Java, we can't play most of the videos and animations. Even the YouTube videos will not play properly without Java. Is there any solution for this? And BTW, if I have Kasper in my system won't it block such spyware and trojans?

Sorry for the bitcoins you have lost. It's sad to hear that when someone is working hard to earn bitcoin, the other one will just take it that easily. Hopefully, this won't happen to others.

This happened shortly after receiving my hardware wallet (ledger), which I never got round to filling up. Obviously storing £350k(that hurts to type) on my daily computer was a moronic thing to do.

The Bitcoins were then split and are currently residing at these two addresses:

Yeah, If I lose that kind of money, I will be flipping, I do not know if I will go insane but something very close to it, I never had that amount of money in my bank account and that money is a lot in my country so if I lost that, it will be one of the most difficult experiences in my life.

Should have keep it on 3-4 wallet and have it multisig, at least that would make it more difficult for the thief to simply just steal the password/private key and get the BTC out of your wallet, have my BTC stolen by bitcoin gold scam, though the amount is below $20 still I felt bad about losing coin, feels like you lost trust to everyone associate with bitcoin gold

Would obtaining a hardware wallet eliminate this kind of losses? I don't like this electrum feature which can expose your seed after you typing a password. They should at least use 2fa or similar. I would definitely get one if my wallet reach 2 btc (I promised myself)

I feel sorry for your loss. I hope we all can learn our lesson from that story.

Losing 95 Bitcoin is no joke (though I don't believe it) lol, because that is insane to lose just for gambling, I think it is not that worth to spend bitcoin that many just because you wanted to win back what you have lost, because sometimes, the result is just like what happened to yours, because you wanted to win a certain amount, you lose the whole thing that you have, and that is more painful than to lose a certain amount.

Sorry for your losses, that sucks to hear.
Do you have any idea where the keylogger came from? Have you confirmed it was indeed a keylogger?
Make sure to always check the task manager when using a pc. It is to ensure hacks and I am also sorry for the huge amount lost.

Absolutely. That's the whole point of them.

Control over your private keys is never exposed directly to the internet. The important functions are on the device which is air gapped.

That's why I've never really understood why people recommend Electrum unless it's on a permanently offline computer. There are so many ways to access coins on a PC and you can never be sure it's secure.

Same goes for blockchain.info. Your security depends on how solid your own machine is. I can't be sure so I don't mess with it.

I am very sorry for your loss and I hope that one day you can make it back again. I have barley anything to lose, just a few coins here and there nothing of great value, but even so thank you for the kind advice and we should all learn from this lesson. Sometimes we also got hacked and lost coins in exchanges but not such large amounts. We lost mainly by not selling certain coins at ath or selling too early before they mooned. My wife got her btc stolen by 2 devs that was a total of around 50 btc so it was painful enough. All her life savings plus some.

You would've not lose them, if you used MyWish service, that lets you transfer your crypto to another wallet in case you lose an access. MyWish is based on smart contracts and works with Etherium, however in Q1 2018 there will be bitcoin support. Keep that and mind and try it :)

While reading topic title I thought it is a fake one, but when seen in Blockchain it proved that you lost huge money. I am not getting why these wallets doesn't have support, whereas PayPal, Skrill and other payment systems had support in recovering money back.

Who is going to store money in such type of wallets when there is no support or security from hackers.

That was a large ammount of bitcoin you have and it made you as a target of some hackers.Have you already checked if there's really a keylogger?Try using some antivirus as it really tracks if you have one.You also should've seperated your bitcoins into different wallets so that if you loss one you will stil have some.
