What does the "Volume" number really mean? (Sorry, I'm new to trading.)

On mtgox it was a rolling 24hr volume and I think that has become standard with bitcoin volume info.

If you follow bitcoincharts.com then the daily volume (and open/close) resets at precisely 01:00 GMT +0.
All coins traded between then and the next 24 hours are the daily 'volume'.
