Title: British pubs accepting bitcoin.
Post by: ragmondo on June 08, 2013, 09:37:46 AM
In case you hadn't seen the related posts in reddit, there is a small group of pubs that now accept bitcoin. Details here : http://www.individualpubs.co.uk/ . Despite the website looking like something from the 80s (at least they have a website right?), the pubs are all actually really nice. No music, TV blaring at you etc etc. And real beer too !!

Looking at coinmap.org, it seems they are not yet listed there.  What about adding the appropriate payment:bitcoin=yes tag to OpenStreetMap?

One of those pubs - The Pembury Tavern - is the venue for our next London meet-up on June 23rd

So do you need a particular iphone/Andriod app for that?  Or is it a case of scanning a barcode and sending the relevant amount from a web wallet such as Coinbase?

Any Windows Phone equivalent app?

Not sure about windows phones, but i-phone does not support a mobile wallet. Android phones do though.

Using a web wallet is possible though it is a bit more of a fuss than using a mobile wallet.

Going to a pub that has good food and good beer is one of lifes great pleasures I think. Why would you not want to go?

Some people do not see it that. But I ask the same questions myself. People do not understand why I enjoy picking up girls as opposed to sitting at home/work. They think its weird n creepy. Oh well more hot girls for me to play with, more pubs, beer, food for me.

Im a greedy dog.

They display or print out a QR code for you to send funds to.  Doesn't really matter how you do it, as long as the transaction is broadcast immediately.  They say it worked well with the Android Bitcoin Wallet in their tests.

Apple has censored Bitcoin and I would not be surprised if Microsoft does the same given the direction they are heading with Windows 8 RT and "secure boot". The best choices are Android or a phone based on a GNU/Linux OS such as Ubuntu that cannot be censored by some multi-national corporation.

Despite the website looking like something from the 80s

Which is a good thing. I'm sick of all these morons who just finished some course on web design and wanna show off their "skills" and then fill their web sites with all kinds of applets, flash, Java, etc., and the sites end up not showing correctly on a lot of browsers. Unless needed because of their specific purposes, sites should stick to basic, 100% compliant HTML as much as possible. I write all my sites on PSPad, by the way. They may look simple but they work for everyone. If 10% of viewers have trouble viewing your web site, that means 10K less users out of 100K visitors. OK, I've vented it all out now, feeling much better. :D

Surely more people should get on this? Without iPhone support it will never reach the masses. A quick easy way to pay on mobile seems to be the future of bitcoin. Without Apple it's very limited.

It could easily be a complete waste of time. Why would anyone spend the time and effort to develop Bitcoin iPhone apps only to have Apple censor them? In any case iPhone is fast loosing market share to Android. Bitcoin will reach the masses in mobile payments in-spite of Apple's censorship; however Bitcoin may take down Apple in the process.

All that is needed to some limited support for jailbroken IOS devices. The market will take care of the rest.

I have read a few topics on iphone and wallet and i am wondering why this is a problem?

Blockchain.info has their iphone wallet app, and it will serve for this purpose. Or am i a missing something?
I can also not see the point of running a "full" wallet client that demands 30+GB blockchain data either :)

Apple is a minority of the smartphone market  ;) It will reach the masses even without this so-called "iphone"  :)

Even though these pubs are miles away from me. It's still nice to hear that they have opted for then Bitcoin payment. Yay!

One can still use blockchain.info's iOS app,
http://blockchain.info/wallet/iphone-app

This app is much easier to use than a browser based online wallet.
You need to open a free account with blockchain.info, I think.

I've got a blockchain.info app on my ipod (I dont use an iphone, ipod + wifi is good enough for my cheap ass) and I keep around 25$ worth of btc in my blockchain wallet when I want to go out and do real-world spending. ofc I haven't found any real place I want to spend money yet as I live in a remote place, but I have tried it out by sending tiny amounts from one wallet client to another by scanning qr codes. Very simple and easy to use.

PS. I will be in Paris all summer and would love to try it out for reals, esp. if I can buy booze. Why do Parisiennes resist adopting the btc so hard? cant find anything there :-(

They have wifi in the Devonshire pub (one of the bitcoin-accepting pubs) so you would be able to use your iPod touch there, not sure about the other one in Cambridge...

I used iPhone with blockchain.info app (as a hot wallet with only 1 BTC loaded on it)  8)
