Title: 2GB vs. 1GB GPUs?
Post by: cvicisso on June 26, 2011, 09:25:37 PM
Does anyone know of a site/reference that shows differences between 1GB and 2GB cards?  This one: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison) only lists the card (not how much memory).

I'm specifically interested in the hashing rate for a 1GB 5850 or 5870 (since they're pretty cheap).

Thanks.

Video memory has no impact in mining. In fact, most every underclocks their memory as low as possible in order to reduce volts/heat.

Memory size of graphics cards shouldn't matter when mining, since no textures are being cached while mining. If the factory clock speeds are the same, then it should have nearly same hashing speeds.

2gb will greatly help your resale value though

If there isn't much difference in price, get a 2 GB one, because if you ever find yourself willing to get rid of your rigs (because mining might stop being profitable) you'll be able to sell it for a higher price (a lot of people think that more VRAM = better GPU performance)

Yeah - that's what I did with my first three (and only) 6950s - but I did it for the wrong reason (I assumed the memory made a difference in hashing).
