Title: Bitcoin on XE
Post by: amincd on June 10, 2013, 08:01:20 PM
I think this deserves its own thread. Bitcoin is now on XE, the world's most popular currency conversion site:

http://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/convert/?Amount=1&From=XBT&To=USD

It was put on Oanda a few months ago, so now it's listed on the two largest currency conversion sites.

Thanks for posting this - having zero familiarity with XE, could someone explain or speculate on how (if?) this will help BTC?

They use xe for trip reimbursement when traveling abroad on business trips.

It's currently standing on the last page of the currency's . ( http://www.xe.com/currency/ ). So not a lot people are gonna see it there. Maybe if we click on the page for Bitcoin a lot, it will appear between the popular currency's and thus also on their homepage. Maybe the result will then be that more people will know Bitcoin. If it helps a little bit it's worth the effort in my opinion.

Yeah, but too bad both XE and Oanda only offer price quotes for it. They don't have it able for trading.
I think when/if they make it available on their forex trading platforms, it will help to bring more stability to the exchange rate.

This is bullish.

How is the rate calculated does anyone know?
why XBT? (and not BTC)
why not cBTC or 1 mBTC for that matter?

From XE.com, although it does not say which exchange(s) they are getting the buy/sell from:
Quote from: XE.com
The rates in our free information services are neither "buy" nor "sell" rates. Instead, they are mid-market rates derived from the mid-point between the "buy" and "sell" rates from global currency markets. Our free information services always list the mid-market rate because it indicates the value of a currency that is not weighted towards buying or selling.

It'll be easy to spot the early adopters, they be slow to change from BTC.

None the less the rate should have been cBTC = XBY (a lost opportunity.)

There is a link on there web site to email them with more info about bitcoin. Does anyone want to help them become more informed? Or maybe some suggestions that would be beneficial for bitcoin.

I also use XE.com frequently, have been pushing for XBT usage, and am very pleased with this update! Thank you XE for making our lives easier!

Now comes the interesting question: where does the price come from? (I read what they claimed, but I want to know the exact sources)

Really nice! I use XE every now and then but for quick currency calculations I use Google, for example: "1 usd to eur" ( http://lmgtfy.com/?q=1+usd+to+eur ).
Let's see when we can search for "1 xbt to eur" :)

I don't like the XBT thingy. I'll stick with BTC as does oanda.com

I wouldn't count on that for long.

Lol. He does have a point though, but it also applies to people who invested heavily in the "BTC" naming convention for domains and such. I've already started using XBT in branding for products, just as I have previously used the Ƀ (http://www.ecogex.com/bitcoin/) symbol for Bitcoin in everything I do.

I like that Ƀ symbol, but those railway station logo colors are just awful.

Just spotted this... GF was updating the apps on her iPad and XE was among them. There must have been something triggered at an instinct level as I immediately saw 'Now with bitcoins!' as the update note :)

Excellent news!

Yes, that "Now with bitcoins!" is like buy now before is too late. Touché!

Another option to buy Bitcoins is never really a bad thing, especially if you live in the UK!!  ::)

XE are still just using Gox rates and are currently telling the world that a bitcoin is $255.

Please join me in letting them know about some alternatives.

I'd probably be inclined to recommend this one at the moment:  http://www.coindesk.com/price/

But are there any other better alternatives?

Funny XE I thought more of them.
https://bitcoinaverage.com/ is another
I like coindesk's BPI

I did see another with a volume weighted index I thought was better than both the above ( I'll post it when I think of it.)

The best alternative is always the highest priced, right?  ::) Way to pump a coin..

So, it is possible to buy BTC at MtGox price on xe.com. Has anyone tried this?

Bitpays way to calculate the price seems to be most fair. https://bitpay.com/bitcoin-exchange-rates
