Title: Amazon accepting Bitcoin - What can go wrong?

I see a lot of people pushing for companies like Amazon to accept Bitcoin as a payment option. Have we considered the

implications of these decisions? Let's say we cannot scale to "service" the need for millions of new people who would use

We need to wait for the perfect scaling solution to address this problem, before Amazon or any other big retailer starts to

Let's hear your thoughts on this?  ??? ???

I follow what is happening with Amazon, and today's news are throwing new light on this situation. https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/amazon-subsidiary-registers-ethereum-cryptocurrency-domains/?utm_content=bufferc7af1&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer
I don't understand fully what is happening here, I will copy one sentence from article "large organizations regularly register domain names to protect their brand, and that as such the move, by itself, isnít enough to jump to any conclusions". What will happen and why they opened this domains is not clear, do they have any plans or they are just protect their brand we will see.

There is many options available in online to use the bitcoin to recharge mobiles, air tickets and purse provides the payment options. Last month announcement from the Amazon team that making bitcoin to use in their site. Will take more opportunities to the re-sellers who doing selling for amazon.

I think a high percentage of amazon customers opt for the free shipping option which can take 2+ weeks. Waiting for bitcoin to confirm, on top of a 2 week shipping time may not be that much of an inconvenience.

The "scaling problem" could be a good problem to have. One way of viewing it is: "bitcoin can't be used to buy a cup of coffee and isn't ready for a prime time, mainstream, role". The flipside of that might say that if bitcoin's network lacks the transactional volume to cover all transactions, retailers might expand their platform to include support for other crypto to fill the vacuum. One perspective is likely over-optimistic while the other is the opposite. The likely outcome could be somewhere inbetween the two.

Bitpay green lights transactions on the 1st confirmation which isn't too bad.

Amazon accepting bitcoin would be similar to an official endorsement. If the public sees amazon endorsing bitcoin while banker CEO's condemn bitcoin it will create a divide, a conflict of mainstream opinion as opposed to the typical unified front the media is often able to maintain. That could encourage the public to research and learn about crypto more rather than believe the mainstream media angle of it being a bubble, which could be a good thing even if transactions aren't instantaneous.

Let's say we skip wait-times altogether. Say nobody gives a shit (a lot of people do, though). What about the fees? The astronomical fees from say, 200k utxo in mempool? I think it could hurt bitcoin more than it would help which gets me ranting about Core's incompetence.

I wont see any problems regarding on this matter if they would add up bitcoin on their payment options. We do know that once bitcoin has being transferred it cant be reverted which this thing would really matter if Amazon management would consider this thing.Once payment is already reflected then normal transactions would be done after that.If they cant comprehend those kind of situations then for sure they wont really accept it and would rather stay on the traditional ways since they are already here for how many years using that payment options.

Using Bitcoin in online transactions can make it more efficient and safe. A person can make transactions anywhere and he/she is sure that the payment will be received. So for me, Bitcoin in Amazon is a great thing to push through. It can make things easier for both the Amazon and their customers. As you can see, everything is going digital nowadays and we should accept change especially if it is for a better cause.

Bitcoin being accepted by major online retailers like amazon, ebay and more others is making sense of happiness among shoppers.
People would not need to wait for hours, mostly the retailers that accept bitcoin do confirm payment as soon as first confirmation of transaction takes place.
Retailers will not go through bitcoin payment system until they have a perfect scaling solution for their clients payments.

If all that can happen then Bitcoin will be better than now. Great e-commerce will make bitcoin better known and its use will be wider. Systematically this can make an increase in Bitcoin prices. I saved some Bitcoin at the moment and I started to exchange local currency to Bitcoin for use in purchasing goods online. I am now regularly buying cellular credit and paying electricity bills using Bitcoin. and if amazon and ebay can accept Bitcoin then it could be 50% financial system many people will be controlled by Bitcoin.

The more I look at it and more news coming out about it, only good things I can react on this matter. Amazon is a big company that can only boost more bitcoin popularity to its client. This is something Iím looking forward to experienced. This year is the best of all, when it comes to cryptocurrency history.

What can we expect more about bitcoin + amazon now? when the price is at 7400$ is it a big jump if indeed will happen this year or maybe an early next year. I donít see but thinks on this news.

I don't think it will do any bad for bitcoin at all. We all know that there are obviously millions of people using Amazon right now, and yes, many of them, or maybe most of them does not even know about bitcoin and it would be their first time to see it or use it if they want, but i don't think they will consider it a bad choice if they understand the whole concept of it rather than just looking at the time a transaction takes or the high fees right now. They would surely use bitcoin instead of any other payment option because i don't think if a person needs something urgently they would use online shopping for it, and if it is nothing about being early, why bother about the confirmation of your payment? Let it take its time and wait for your product to get shipped to you.

Not sure how this will directly affect BTC but Iím curious as to how amazon would go about this scenario.
Say someone buys an item when BTC is $5000/BTC. They then decide to return the item a few days later by which point the price changes significantly (up or down). How would amazon go about it? If they refund you in BTC they could potentially lose a lot of money on the refund if the price of BTC goes up, assuming that they exchange the BTC for FIAT given the fact that they need to forward payments to sellers and the like...

I think bitcoin is not effective for payment methods, more likely to be effective for investments like gold, because the price is very expensive,
or there is a store like amazon for payment method with minimum price to buy valuable goods, and no method of payment on goods that are cheap

I'm not sure whether my thinking is right or wrong, but from my view such an acceptance from Amazon will truly take bitcoin reach next levels of growth in terms of acceptance, usage from people as well market circulation. Same time there are possibilities of dropping the same service, because several companies have initiated plans of accepting bitcoin and stopped it once they felt its not used much by the people as expected.

That can easily be 'solved' with off-chain implementations like Lightning Network, which would allow an insane number of transactions to be pumped through per second, and that potentially at ultra low cost. It will allow people to conduct micro transactions (which will significantly spark adoption in third world countries), and thus also purchase things that are priced at sub $1 levels without any problems. In that regard, it would suit you to adjust your stance on Bitcoin as currency. Currently I do admit that the fees as per their fiat value look high, but that's because the price has gone up significantly, and partly because Segwit (still) isn't being put into practice as much as I would like it to be.

Fees are a controversial topic. One school of thought says: core developers are to blame. The opposing school of thought says: miners are creating a crisis to justify getting rid of core devs, to centralize the development and mining paradigms of btc under their own domain.

Awhile ago, I posted an article containing evidence to support the latter argument, in this thread:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2277787.0

The case for bigger blocks is open for debate. Its very possible there are hidden political agendas behind the call for increases in block size. Rather than legitimate technical or engineering based need for it.

If you follow software engineers on twitter or social media. Its always interesting to see them weigh in and comment on the debate. They don't necessarily support segwit2x or bigger blocks like some might expect them to.

This are all rumors still no official announcement about it in amazon i think the transaction time is just fine where you have to wait 10-20 minutes for the transaction to get confirmed also some big company namely CME group have accepted bitcoin so this might convince anazon to also invest in it. Amazon is advertising bitcoin and have been jumping to conclusions we should just wait on what move they're goin to make.

If anyone has BTC but has no idea about the confirmations when using it, that would be like buying a mobile phone without any knowledge of how to use it. Also when a person buys BTC that person must have created a BTC wallet in order to receive the bought BTC. And after purchasing BTC that same person will see that it needs confirmation etc before it becomes available for spending, the wallet will show that. But if a person decides to let all of this done by another person due to laziness, then that person deserves the anguish when trying to spend it as a reward for their own stupidity.

Thinking this way it makes sense. We are not talking about perishable food items that must be bought and consumed fast, we are talking about other products that don't have expiration date, so there isn't any problem in waiting some days or even weeks as you said to have the product sent. It's enough time to have the transaction finished paying a lower fee and if the transaction cancels because a very low fee reason, just cancel the package as well, it works fine.

And a big business like this can really make more people start thinking about Bitcoin and its advantages. There are many people who use Amazon services, but don't know or don't have interest in BTCs yet, but after an adoption like that it's possible that these people change their minds and spread the word about Crypto-Currency. It's good especially to make more sellers adopt BTC.

I mean, if you order from Amazon you're putting in your address, name, phone number, etc. So I don't really see an issue. Not only would that boost Bitcoins price but it would also give people that have large quantities of BTC an option to buy shit.

Still merchants won't process your order/s until after a decent number of confirmations on your transaction has been received so if you put a low fee and it took a few days before it reached the minimum confirmations, your order could be delayed and might no longer fit to the stated free shipping time frame.

So In conclusion to that I think its still a problem although I'm sure there are users who are still willing to pay high fees for fast confirmation.

I think this should be a consequence that must be agreed between Amazon and the other party that to transact using bitcoin there is of course a process that must be understood and for me it does not become a complicated problem as long as there is acceptable agreement for that matter. and I think this will be understandable for bitcoin users because it's definitely happening. to overcome this kind of thing for a faster transaction is certainly not an easy thing I think it takes a long time for an improvement to the way the transaction can be done quickly this is indeed a homework that must be addressed so that many business people who want to accept the system payment using bitcoin if it happens of course will greatly facilitate bitcoin users by way of transaction using bitcoin.

It won't be a problem at all for Amazon to accept Bitcoin. It's just them not seeing any benefit in doing so at this point, where we also have to take Bitcoin's current technical limitations into consideration.

We have been dealing with full blocks for quite some time now, and this hasn't changed with the activation of SegWit. From there we should just wait for second layer applications on top of Bitcoin to push things forward.

I perfectly understand why Amazon isn't yet willing to allow people to pay with Bitcoin. And if you're so desperately looking for an alternative way, then head over to purse.io ~ it allows you to buy things with Bitcoin from Amazon.

Currently, bitcoin is not popular so if it is a main form of payment, it will not be effective. On average, each transaction has to wait at least 5 hours to confirm, if in e-commerce, it would be very inconvenient for the customer even though transaction with BTC is very safe. Improving confirmed time with each transaction will make BTC more and more popular in the future.  ;D

The risk of getting people to know bitcoin as a currency that "takes a lot of time to transfer" or " transfers are too expensive" is not a big deal compared to the massive adoption that bitcoin could be getting from such a move.

I believe that most of the people that are going to buy bitcoins because Amazon started accepting it, will do so because they saw the payment option on the site, searched for it and found out that the tech is cool, or they saw an article about amazon accepting bitcoin and that was the first time that they heard about crypto currencies.

Also, the current network fees are not so bad compared to other payment methods.

Bitcoin is ready for the mass adoption, the network is strong, and even if blocks are usually full, the network is still stable enough to maintain more transactions.

This seems a major issue but not a critical one because already many online shops are using bitcoin as payment so they must have a valid procedure to confirm the transaction quickly and if not it can be solved with the passage of time as the technology is evolving.
The biggest advantage is that more people will get to know about bitcoin and its use and they will start using it too through amazon, so the confirmation time can get better with the time and we should not wait more to get it better first.

The volatility isn't a problem at all for any store to start accepting Bitcoin. If we look at how the far majority of the stores accept Bitcoin, then it's through third party payment processors who convert all Bitcoin sales directly into fiat. Stores don't have to deal with the volatility since it's the 'problem' of the payment processor that they use at that point. I am certain that Amazon is well aware of how things go in this market, but they, whatever their reason may be, have no interest in accepting Bitcoin as payment option. So no, no store accepting Bitcoin through these third party services will end up in the red because of the volatility....

I am certain that Amazon is well aware of how things go in this market, but they, whatever their reason may be, have no interest in accepting Bitcoin as payment option. So no, no store accepting Bitcoin through these third party services will end up in the red because of the volatility....

I'm not exactly sure what you mean when you say "Stores don't have to deal with the volatility since it's the 'problem' of the payment processor."

That doesn't really make sense to me. Are you saying that if Amazon is selling some 100$ item and decide to take bitcoin for it, and the next day that dollar amount is worth 20$, that it's the payment processor's issue? I don't see how that really relates. It would seem like Amazon is the one taking the 80$ hit in that situation because they used fiat to purchase/obtain the item, and then are selling it to someone for bitcoin.

Amazon does not need Bitcoin, so there is no such improvement, one of the things I want the most is that Bitcoin is used as a payment method. If Amazon accepts Bitcoin as the payment method, we only know this from the price increase.

We don't even know if people will use that option in the first place. I'm sure most compulsive HODLers would much rather use their credit card or something. One of the reasons Amazon might not be accepting bitcoin is because it would not see much use, and there's very little pressure for them to pull the trigger.

They don't need bitcoin but they need the demand of their customers. They are aware that many of their customers are into bitcoin and as a company that are giving such service to the people they will consider something new and if that is having a lot of support from majority of their customers. And we as riders of bitcoin, have been waiting for this day that amazon starts to accept bitcoin and who knows if they announce their support to bitcoin ebay is next.  ???

Yeaaa that's why they have a plan to have a different place for crypto user by bought three different domain names relating to digital currencies.
Pretty reasonable move for them to not accept crypto directly and have such a smart plan.
Actually don't know what will happened then , that's just my point of view.

You don't get it. If amazon sells something worth $100 in Bitcoin through a payment processor, Amazon receives the $100 in fiat (minus the fee which is 1%). In easy terms, Amazon gets paid out $99. The payment processor takes responsibility for the conversion of Bitcoin to fiat, which means that the volatility is only the concern of the payment processor. That goes up for every store accepting Bitcoin through these payment processors. They optionally can choose to go for a certain percentage that they receive in Bitcoin, and the rest in fiat, but that optional feature doesn't see much actual usage due to stores not being interested in holding something that's so volatile.

That Amazon doesn't want accept bitcoin directly is very interesting info because I already assume that they have deep ties to banks and governments and that would explain why they didn't offer it yet.
If i am not wrong there is a lot of discussion about the pros and cons how if amazon adopt bitcoin as a payment gateaway.
Mostly says it is scared , bitcoin is a dangerous thing , a non sense thing created on the internet etc.
The point is there a lot of feedback on how they don't want to support the project , but it was long time ago. Today might they have different plan to deal with bitcoin , i hope so.

However, I'm still positive that maybe in the future, then can sorted things out and one day accept bitcoin as payment. I don't see any incentive to take the risk of accepting bitcoin as a way of payment by any of the established big players. Innovation pioneers are generally small entrepreneurs cause it is their only choice to innovate. However big players can just adopt the method after they see it is working already. Hereby they have chance to test the market by basically doing anything.

There's an incentive for them if they just understand by getting into the market of bitcoin chances of pushing other skeptic investors will be encouraged to get into bitcoin. Amazon is one of the most popular ecommerce / online shop that has millions of customers. The incentive isn't just for them but for all of us but they have to understand first what bitcoin really is and what it can give to their business.

If amazon accepts bitcoin, then it would make bitcoin more popular and familiar among new people.By this way, amazon too could get new customers who opt to pay only in bitcoins. It would be a hassle free payment system and could be done from anywhere. If amazon accepts bitcoin payments, then more companies would keep trust over bitcoins and would start accepting bitcoins which would bring bitcoin in to the mainstream.

Probably the time it will take to complete any transaction. Bitcoin takes time to confirm and in situations where there is flash sales, it could cause one to loose deals easily.

Of course with the help of the Internet, such as the Amazon platform or others, That is, some nuances that allow the buyer to realize their plans well thanks to Bitcoin, but How do we put Bitcoin to live?

There is no question that bitcoin has a lot of advantages as well as disadvantages. But we have yet to really see how big companies will accept it. For one, volatility is the one reason why amazon is not yet accepting bitcoins. Maybe they will get like a third party to handle bitcoins payments. We can only hope that they will make the right decision to accept bitcoins or even just like to experiment accepting it to see if it is profitable on their end.

Nope. Amazon itself doesn't accept Bitcoin as payment form, that should be perfectly clear to anyone. It's just that certain third party services allow you to purchase stuff from Amazon with Bitcoin, and that's really it.

Amazon will likely only come to a point to accept Bitcoin, when lightning network is up and running. Bitcoin in its current form and the sheer number of spam attacks isn't function well enough as currency tool.

Without second layer applications, nothing will change, and that's a fact. That's why people are eagerly waiting for lightning network, and that for a good reason. It will bring some much needed functionalities.

I see a lot of people pushing for companies like Amazon to accept Bitcoin as a payment option. Have we considered the implications of these decisions? Let's say we cannot scale to "service" the need for millions of new people who would use this technology for the first time. What a big embarrassment would it be, if people waited 13 hours for their transactions to be confirmed. Doing this now will hurt Bitcoin more than any other "bad" thing that has happened to it before.

We need to wait for the perfect scaling solution to address this problem, before Amazon or any other big retailer starts to accept Bitcoin as a payment option. The Lightning Network might get us close, but it is not a proven technology yet.

Let's hear your thoughts on this?  ??? ???
You really do have a point mate! Doing this now would probably make matters worse but we really would not know until we try or the devs might be too relaxed to look for a solution until we start seeing some little bit of these issues here and there.

The proposal of BCH and B2X is all as a result of this which does not really sound like a good solution for now, but it is getting pretty close and we cannot just avoid that. Something should be done fast, cause with or without amazon; we really need a scaling solution right now.

I don't think this would be the real problem. Normal people won't be using bitcoin to buy stuff on amazon, only people who already own BTC and know about its transaction times would be using this option.
I actually think that amazon accepting BTC would have a really positive effect on Bitcoin and its price.

But then you may need to adjust your transaction fees to make the transaction fast as if you apply in Lighting sale you get 10 minutes  to complete the transaction, also if Amazon starts accepting Bitcoin it will not easy to integrate the process in the system as buying and selling of goods comes under economic services of the nation. If there is too much enrollment of Bitcoin it may lead to regulations which can end the real meaning of Bitcoin transactions.

A company like Amazon using Bitcoin would be huge because not only it is the biggest e-commerce/retailer in many countries it has many other service such as AWS ect so it will push the adoption of Bitcoin by the average joe several folds, But there are several issues such as the votality of the currency and regulation and nowadays fees and confirmation issues. (although amazon them selves could speedups the confirmations)

In France there is no Bitcoin option heck they just started accepting 4x payment a couple of days ago so we are far from having bitcoin as a method of payement here

Anywa for me big companies accepting bitcoin would render Bitcoin as popular as paypal in my opinion.

I think this is the real problem why mass adoption is still not happening. There are a lot of alternatives that possess lightning speed transactions like Ethereum and Dash so I see nothing bad if they experiment first with these altcoins instead of bitcoin.

If we wait for the perfect solution it will take too much time. For now the solutions are palliative, but work for sometime anyway. People who deal with Bitcoins know its currently limitations, people are aware about it and if they still want to use the digital currency, go on...

With the way of purse.io still amazon purchases is possible with the bitcoin. There is many options available in online to use the bitcoin to recharge mobiles, air tickets and purse provides the payment options. Last month announcement from the Amazon team that making bitcoin to use in their site. Will take more opportunities to the re-sellers who doing selling for amazon.
True. Purse has integrated this into their system for a while now and it has been effective. However, we have to understand that we cannot compare purse users to amazon users. We are talking about the big market here that would create even much more awareness for the use of digital currency.

I totally understand the OP's plight here but I feel if some of these things don't happen now, at one point they will still happen and maybe that should start propelling the devs to really do more.

Llo, the fees would really be the major issue at the end and people will end up just sticking to their normal traditional system than having to make use of the digital currency. Something really needs to be done and done fast and there is no way we can run from it because at one point or the other, we will still have to experience this.

This would really hurt just like you have said and will make people to start pulling to some other alts that would give them a better chance of the real life usage.

Amazon is a very big market place and they have a whole good team of engineers and experts to handle their work. I think they will surely find the solution to the time span to conform the transaction and there one more problem that the high transaction fees bitcoin has this will affect their sales but they will overcome this all things as nothing is impossible.

Bitcoin will one-day reach n all the corners of internet and world too and everyone will start accepting it someone has to take a big step to make a revolution and amazon is doing it by accepting bitcoin as a payment method.

According to " newsbtc.com "
A lot of people are excited about the news involving Amazon and Bitcoin payments. Some sources claim the company will enable cryptocurrency payments soon While that is an interesting opinion, it is also highly unlikely that will happen. In fact, Amazon shows no interest in any additional payment methods right now. It would be an interesting development if true, though.

This is not the first time we see rumors regarding Amazon and cryptocurrency payments. It would be a welcome change to see this happen. After all, the worldís largest online retailer accepting the only global payment method would yield some intriguing results. Unfortunately,  this is nothing more than wishful thinking right now. This will not change anytime soon, though, despite what some sources may claim. ;D ;D ;D

You can use up your bitcoin on buying but by the use of purse.io as far as i remember because this thing is the way i do purchase something on amazon. You would need to use the service of purse.io.
Complications of accepting bitcoin as a mode of payment would really be there specially on confirmation times. Scaling solution would really be suggested. how many hours waiting time would really be not a good thing for consumer or users view.

We cannot expect things to remain the way they have always been. Definitely, one can understand that the scaling issue has been dragging for a while but that does not mean it won't be solved. If Amazon decides to accept bitcoin, obviously, it is not like everyone is going to start making use of it immediately.

Purse has somehow integrated Purchase of Amazon items with Bitcoin for a while now and it has been going smoothly even though directly on Amazon will mean on a large scale but if we do not start something, we may just end up being in our comfort zone.

Yes, we can but not in all countries anyway. There are still some countries where Amazon does not really ship to so we may just have to look at the concentration to be in some particular regions until then. However, it is still going to be massive anyway considering Amazon being an e-commerce giant with a lot of transactions being done every day. It would definitely pave way for a huge adoption for bitcoin.

Anywa for me big companies accepting bitcoin would render Bitcoin as popular as paypal in my opinion.
It really will push the adoption off the hook and knowing the amount of trading that is being done on the Amazon platform daily and looking at how the trading on Purse.io alone has been going for a while now, then one can really say the market is going to be huge. Bitcoin is surely not ready yet for that massive usage yet, but anything can change with the scaling issue being solved within a split of a second.

It's not that my country is against Bitcoins as there are places where is see Bitcoin is accept but I just don't feel that Amazon has started accepting Bitcoin in my country.

No one said that Amazon accepts Bitcoin. Not that long ago there was an article hinting at Amazon to be very close to accepting Bitcoin payments, but before that article got debunked by anyone with a functional brain, it was stated to be a hoax afterwards. Noobs were constantly spamming this entire forum on how 'fantastic' and 'amazing' it was that Amazon would accept Bitcoin. People here jump on something and take it for granted without doing any research themselves, and using common sense. Amazon doesn't need to accept Bitcoin, and in current state never will. I only see them even consider accepting Bitcoin, when lightning network is fully operational.

I think this is the real problem why mass adoption is still not happening. There are a lot of alternatives that possess lightning speed transactions like Ethereum and Dash so I see nothing bad if they experiment first with these altcoins instead of bitcoin.
Well, trust may be the case and the support. Most times it is better to make use of something that is already being used on a large scale by a lot of people knowing the problem that is to be solved, than a coin that has not even been tested on a large scale yet and can show a lot of problem at any time. Just in simple terms, the devil you know is far better than the angel you do not know.

Amazon doesn't need to accept Bitcoin, and in current state never will. I only see them even consider accepting Bitcoin, when lightning network is fully operational.
In current state, I guess any company may love start accepting bitcoin payments as it will be double benefit to them (it is a way of collecting bitcoins and it is a way to attract new community of customers), in my opinion Amazon cannot be an exception.

Yeah it is possible because as you said the bitcoin is now available for everything and the bitcoin is now getting famous day by day I know the bitcoin is now very popular and the price of the bitcoin will be high if the people will invest in the bitcoin and they will see the bitcoin will be the highest currency in the future as well. I see a lot of people pushing for companies like Amazon to accept Bitcoin as a payment option. Have we considered the

implications of these decisions? Let's say we cannot scale to "service" the need for millions of new people who would use

this technology for the first time. What a big embarrassment would it be, if people waited 13 hours for their transactions to

be confirmed. Doing this now will hurt Bitcoin more than any other "bad" thing that has happened to it before.

We need to wait for the perfect scaling solution to address this problem, before Amazon or any other big retailer starts to

accept Bitcoin as a payment option. The Lightning Network might get us close, but it is not a proven technology yet.

Let's hear your thoughts on this?  ??? ???
I think this is not a bad news to the BTC community. Amazon is aware of this since the bitcoin started. And I think Amazon is a big company that capable to maintain the value of bitcoin and help other small company to do more in the future sense. But you have a point in the other side. I keep observing in the future as well. Thanks for your concern in BTC.

They come to know the importance of bitcoin, if they get bitcoin for FIAT means after someday they will get more then the holding. Actually I will consider this as a honor to the bitcoin. Bitcoin will be the future currency obviously so they get into the bitcoin very soon. This is not a end,all the site will accept bitcoin as a payment instead of FIAT Soon.

I think it has improved a lot because mempool is not that clogged anymore. But to really improved in LN should be implement but that is just another story. That's why when bitcoin price beginning to go up, I think it has defeated its own purpose of being a micro-payment transaction. Now people think of it as a form of investment. So it will really take more time for bitcoin to be accepted and adopted by most merchants today.

If they aren't smart, Amazon will not grow as the #1 largest online retailer in the world. But it would take some time for them to really accept bitcoin now. They have to look at how the market of bitcoin is, potential earnings, their clients and so on. I also wish that Amazon should accept it today, but I have uneasy feeling that it will take some time for them to recognized bitcoin and readily accept it as mode of payment.

I do not believe that any large corporation will accept bitcoin until either the lightning network is online, or there is a block size increase to reduce fees.

Segwit has been active for quite a while now, and yet it lacks serious usage due to services being reluctant to actually utilize Segwit for whatever reason. I am quite sure that if the economical majority starts utilizing Segwit to the full, we would likely be able to get the fees to decrease a bit, but that's all for now - Segwit unfortunately isn't a solution. We definitely need off-chain solutions (Lightning Network) to offer people the convenience they expect a proper functioning currency to have. Till that time, we shouldn't expect any major entity such as Amazon to even consider accepting Bitcoin. But then again, Lightning Network will definitely stimulate micro transactions, but these will likely just be P2P transactions rather than people actually spending their coins. No matter how well Lightning Networks functions, people will still consider Bitcoin to be more of an investment or store of value, rather than something they spend to purchase goods.

Big e-commerce companies like Amazon (or Alibaba) would incredibly increase the diffusion and use of bitcoin.
these companies have hundreds of millions of users with endless transactions every day!
When this happens, the diffusion of the btc will be massive.
Obviously in the meantime it will be necessary to find solutions for an immediate confirmation of the transactions.

Its because AMAZON holds so many regular customers and sellers as well. I mean sellers because they needs to accept with bitcoin payment systems.
So accepting bitcoin is not much easy in order to push sellers to accept the same because everyone needs to believe or understand its value.
If amazon or any eCommerce giants could able to find those sellers who aware and interested in crypto currency acceptance then it will be great and the same news will give a big spike in bitcoin.
Decision making is not only with AMAZON but also with contract seller's hand too.

Steam (if you're referring to that service) has indeed stopped accepting Bitcoin unfortunately, but it's quite understandable if we look at it from an unbiased point of view. People won't pay $10-$15 just in fees when they with that money can top up their account and buy stuff. I hope that Steam will rethink their decision once lightning network becomes publicly available. It should take away the current inconvenience and give people what they want, and that's something actually being worth spending. In easy terms, as long as there is no lightning network, people shouldn't expect Amazon to come on board.

There are two sides to this coin, you are only seeing the bad. If amazon began to receive in BTC with certainty in this version that the BTC this the network would be extremely congested due to the payments of purchases made in their site.

On the other hand if Amazon started to receive the currency as a payment would give an incredible hype in popularity, this would attract curious divers to the world of crypto coins and consequently disverse of them if they would enter this circle.

Yeah. seeing Steam stopped accepting bitcoin is quite sad, but we can't blame them because of the ever increasing transaction fee that we are experiencing. I guess this is the same reason why Amazon is still contemplating of accepting bitcoin and quite frankly as much as we want them to accept it, we could blame them at all for not doing it. From a business point of view, there's little money to make with, maybe they need to upgrade their infrastructure as well and the returns is that that good. I also agree with the Lighting Network alternatives, but its gonna be a uphill battle if they are going to implement it as sidechains to bitcoin.

It is really a good factor as that would bring in a lot of investors and users into the community. Purse has been doing great trying to integrate their bitcoin escrow system into amazon purchase and people have been making good use of it.

Now, imagine going on a large scale, the rate at which bitcoin enthusiasts and to be investors will see it as a chance to use in real life. But for now, the devs have been complacent with the speed of transaction and I really do not know how long this is going to take.

It's hard for bitcoin to meet the requirements to become the form of payment for a big business such as Amazon, bitcoin is an asset for now due to inability to fulfil so many transactions in every second, high fee and it takes a long time to be confirmed. Fiat currency or credit card is a better option to make a transaction on the daily basis. It becomes community decisions to take another step for bitcoin scale solution which can take months and even years to agree on such crucial thing, or we just can't get into mainstream transactions, and stay in the box for another year.

for now it's totally unfeasible. Maybe, for the very first steps in a reality like amazon a good solution could be accepting btc only to purchase high-value gift cards ( 50$ or more). Starting with an adoption of btc only as a payment option restricted for that things (and it could be a solution to avoid third parties in gift card markets which accept btc) - but is too early to adopt it as a general payment option  :(

Yes, Amazon has a pretty big market and the number of transactions going on every day is huge which is why bitcoin still have some pretty good development to make before then. Things would change, segwit has been on and even though it is not being used that much, time will make it change.

I am really looking forward now to seeing the LN deployed because that is the only way this can work and it is really long overdue.

We have all known what network congestion can be like and we do not know the level at which the Amazon community is going to embrace bitcoin yet, but we sure do have to be prepared for it so we can get it right.

New bitcoiner is very important, but if the network does not being rebuilt to make fastest transaction then this is wasting

This news has already been given as fake by several sites, do you have any reliable reference? On this issue I believe that this can give a huge headache to the company and even to the user of the currency. This is due to the high fees we pay today in transactions that would make it impossible to buy low value products. The slowness of the Btc network, which could cause some inconvenience in the price, for example the user buys a product at a price x with Btc with price Y, but its confirmation only arrives 1 or 2 hours later and that price simply is not worth anything more.

If the NN arrives in the coming months and make the promises into reality this can be softened and maybe would not give other companies add the currency as a form of payment.

I can imagine how embarrassing it is going to be, going on that large scale and the network having a swell day from the massive transactions that would be going on. We are still looking forward to hugely going mainstream, but we are absolutely not there yet. There is still so much to do for now about the transactions which so far, only LN deployment can solve.

Yea rightly said, waiting for 12-13 hours or even sometimes more just for a transaction to complete would be the worst thing that has ever happened to bitcoin. This can cause a good issue and the mass media would do its work by starting to bash bitcoin and that could have a good enough effect on bitcoin. So until a solution for the long transaction time is solved it is better that companies like Amazon don't accept bitcoin as a method of payment.

There is not going to be a block increase to reduce fees that is why there is now bitcoin cash, if that is what you want you can go there and use it, bitcoin is going to use the lightning network and when that is functioning things are going to change.

Until the lightning network is well established, and bitcoin volatility is within an acceptable range, it is extremely unlikely that Amazon will be accepting BTC in the near future. Amazon is one of the largest corporations in the world, and make most of their money due to the high number of sales they achieve with mostly low profit margin items. In order for them to remain profitable, they would have to either find a way of nullifying the fees, or only accept it for particularly high profit margin items where they can afford to take a hit to profits for the sake of long term gain.

TL DR; No chance of this occurring any time soon.

For Amazon or any other large organaization to adopt Bitcoin, it seems like they would have to find a way to deal with the extreme volatility of the currency far exceeding their market risk appetites. That Bitcoin futures have been established is a step in the right direction, but that market may need to mature and become deeper before it can accommodate hedgers on the scale of an Amazon.

It is an astonishment news that Amazon is accepting btc. Because the value of bitcoin. We all know that money is relatively stable than Bitcoin if we focuse upon the value. Last year the value of btc started with 900$ and ended up with 1600$. So the graph of this increasement indicates us that the value will also remain increasing day by day. If a good is worth of 5$ then if we want to pay with btc there is a chance of increasing the value of btc. Form my point of view, It's better not to use btc incase of buying of any good.

This things will be fix soon and the said discrepancies will be treated. As long as more bitcoin users want to shop with Amazon, then there will be a big chance that this problem will be fix soon.

Forget about bitcoin, those who were accepting has regected it due high fee and very low transaction speed.bitcoin is simply a virtual gold that can not be used as daily payment system.eth is also showing high fee due to recent growth of dapps .i think ripple might attempt to overtake payment solutions but in my option iota is far better with no fee.

It would be great news for the purpose of giving the price a boost, which is the only thing people care about. I very much doubt that people will end up spending their coins if Amazon did happen to accept Bitcoin. It has been like that years ago, and is still like so today -- people aren't interested in spending their coins with how much future potential Bitcoin has. Spending coins today at $8000 means you look back with an unpleasant experience when the price is like $16,000 one year later. People will maybe go through that once, but they quickly realize that it isn't a good idea to spend anything again. Long term stability is needed in order to make people happily spend their coins, and also remain happy months afterwards.

Since the price of BTC always fluctuates, amazon will not change the price of the product with the price of BTC, and the payment of BTC is not immediately to the account, it will take a little time!

This has caused some trouble to the payment!

Amazon has deep ties to the upper class which became rich based on the fiat money system. If they offer to accept bitcoin and less people will use the fiat money, they are practically fighting against the fiat money system and therefore the government with accepting crypto currencies. Hence, building an opposite to the government system is what can go wrong!

Being a huge company and the recent report of how many people actually subscribed to amazon prime in the past 5 years should go over better for them in the long run.
They seem to have deflect the question of when they plan on allowing it for this long.
So this just might be the reason why. ;)

Apparently, Charlie Lee may end up being right when he said, bitcoin may just end up being a digital asset and people will have to convert to some altcoins to make faster transactions or pay for products.

However, bitcoin would not be the only means of payment if this happens as amazon is looking into some of the top cryptocurrencies (so I heard) and if that happens, we might start seeing some real life application of some of these other ones.

I don't order that much in Amazon and same goes to any other online shopping site like Lazada since it is really hard to get the real-quality item in there. You don't have any indicator's that it is brand new since a simple picture can be just photoshopped to look good.

Anyways, speaking of digital transactions in online shopping sites, I don't have anything against it but Amazon should first have a cleanup to those fake things being sold. Like I was searching one day for an optimal gaming GPU and it has quite a good ratings but then a guy in the forum said that the item in that link  was fake and everyone must avoid it.

What I am trying to point in here is how unapplicable yet Bitcoin is to such large sites or establishments, first Bitcoin is gonna be difficult for refund when you get a fake item judging that mining fees these days is quite an issue. It is still yet convenient. The payment/confirmation is just moderately fast but getting back to it is quite difficult as of now.

Have you ever checked out the purse.io? If you have, then does it take up to thirteen hours for your payment to be confirmed? Lol. So if Amazon starts to accept Bitcoin the process will be the same like when you are making use of purse. I believe that Amazon has seen that Bitcoin will not be in good favor of their business, so there is no need for them to accept it.

And by the way, we donít even need it. If you feel like you want to buy anything from Amazon, then do so by making use of the purse.io site and you will even get up to 25% discount 🙂

The issue of Amazon being able to accept bitcoin as a payment method is entirely feasible. In fact, there are still leaks on this issue before. However, it has not been authenticated yet. That is a great thing that I can look forward to.

The slow processing speed of transactions will prevent Amazon from opening for digital currencies. But if Bitcoin and Ethereum at the moment can not serve the amount of traffic needed for Amazon, then other cryptocurrencies with this task will cope. For example, an altcoyin like Ripple, during the tests, coped with volumes of 1500 transactions per second.

And by the way, the time it takes for your transaction to be confirmed depends on the fees to chose to pay; priority or regular fees. If you choose priority, your payment will be processed faster.

Well the thing is, the transaction is not instant, and yes in some cases it can take several hours if you are not willing to pay a reasonable fee. The thing is, some are not willing to pay a $5 fee if they buy a book that costs $10 (that's 33% fee).

In my opinion, Bitcoin would be more interesting and convenient to be accepted by flight companies, or car dealers, and obviously in the real estate. I very doubt Amazon will accept Bitcoin any time soon. Hope to be proved wrong of course.

Man, this thread is a year old already and Amazon (and eBay, too) have yet to start accepting bitcoin.  That's unfortunate--I remember this thread from last year and I thought we were actually going to get some good news from at least Amazon, but not to be I guess.

As I've said many times, I'm not a huge fan of spending bitcoin, but in the past 5 months or so I've accumulated more than I've had in quite a while and I haven't always wanted to hold it.  I probably would have bought some stuff from Amazon if I could have paid for it there in an easy way.  Selling bitcoin for PayPal always makes me nervous, even though I tend to trade with one individual who hasn't let me down yet.  It's still always risky, and there are times when I'd rather just not convert to fiat, and Amazon is one of the biggest marketplaces on the internet.  If you could just pay for things there with bitcoin there would be zero need to sell bitcoin for cash.

Any idea what their thinking is on this one?  I haven't read anything lately about it or really any big merchants starting to accept bitcoin.

I donít see any much disadvantages in Amazon accepting Bitcoin as a payment method except that transaction takes a few minutes and not hours like you said. If Amazon accepts Bitcoin, it will raise peopleís interests and lots of people would love to try out Bitcoin and see how it works.

I agree that there are some issues relating to transactions but as the use of crypto increases the developers will also go into new innovations in this technology. They will provide ease to its users and will overcome these issues soon. It in the future the use of crypto will be normal and we will have many transactions platforms, then I think nobody will wait for long time for his transitions.

Amazon's plan is a good thing and we still have to look and think.
On the one hand, they will provide law enforcement agencies and authorities with information related to bitcoin. This clearly reduces the value of anonymous promises in the electronic money world. Although the public ledger, as the name implies, is public. On the other hand, Amazon supplies and its stability help providers have an effective mechanism to accept bitcoin payments. This is a strong impetus for Bitcoin's quest for broad acceptance.

there is no such plan from Amazon till today. Amazon never announced that they'll accept Bitcoin. and I don't expect that to happen in near future. bitcoin has gained a place for itself. but there are dozens of other payment solutions also. and Amazon doesn't accept all of them. I assume Bitcoin for them is just like he other payment options.

Amazon is fast growing online company and now when they start accepting bitcoin they will enhance their services and business. It is also easy for people to buy products in Amazon and pay them from their wallet. Transaction sometimes takes long time but it will be covered in the future. Now people will prefer to buy their daily necessities online. The world is going to change.

I think if Amazon accepts Bitcoin, it gives buyer an incentive to trade directly in Bitcoin, and with the bank accounts associated with Bitcoin, it would be technically simple to click activity.

in my opinion it's a good step taken and chosen by Amazon because maybe Amzon has realized that bitcoin will become very expensive in the future so that Amazon keeps and accepts bitcoin as much as they can by utilizing bitcoin payments they will be able to get bitcoin with a very large amount and it is also their strategy to attract increasingly high demand because there will definitely be lots of people shopping using bitcoin payments.

It is good news because now we will be able to buy hardware from any part of the world I am sure it will increase the price of bitcoin as well,. It will allow the online billing and it will open new gates of success for the investors as well, I think everyone should invest this way as it is the only way to get more income than any other investment after this great news.

Amazon really understands what its users need and accepting Bitcoin payments is a great strategy for them. I think in the future the use of bitcoin and cryptocurrency in transactions and payments will be common throughout the world because more and more coins are meeting the needs in many different areas.

That's true, if this happens to amazon that accepts bitcoin as a payment system then the positive impact of bitcoin will be visited by many new users. However, OP has another view if this has happened, all we know the process of bitcoin transactions is still slow, only a few transactions can be processed within one second so as if everyone uses bitcoin then there will be many transactions that are pending. Maybe it will be a solution if the lightening network can be functioned immediately so that every transaction can be passed quickly.

Personally I don't want to see amazon or ebay starting to accept bitcoins, especially amazon. At first ebay has paypal which doesn't accept even btc buy with it, so they'll stick with fiat. On another hand if they have to refund, how will they act? Seems they have to convert bitcoin in usd at the moment of payment receive and do the same on refund (consider that amazon is usually seller itself). Also imagine if amazon receives and receives bitcoin and holds it? I don't want such situation.

It is not good that Amazon provides personal information to law enforcement agencies, because if its customers come to know about this they will never shop online from Amazon. I will never allow anybody to reveal my personal data related to bitcoin. They have nothing to do with it. I am not using my coins in any illegal activity but using with highly reputable worldwide online company.

Making payments with Bitcoin is not slow, not today, cause every payment I have been sending with Bitcoin is always fast with a little fee. Last payment I made and that was last week, the transaction fee charged was $0.08 for sending $70. A cheap fee despite I used priority.

So Bitcoin is good and there is nothing wrong with Amazon accepting it. There are disadvantages, but it wouldnít be Amazon since itís a matter of choice and you will be making payment with any method of your choice.

Bitcoin may need Amazon for its adoption, but Amazon doesn't need BTC. OK, it may help to increase sales, but how much 0.001% of the total sales? In the other side, Bitcoin could benefit from Amazon integration to spread the word about cryptos since you can buy Anything from Amazon Marketplace.

bitcoin will be difficult to serve large-scale transactions at one time and this will be a serious problem where users will feel disadvantaged by the length of this process, all they know is to buy and receive goods as fast as they want.
but if bitcoin is not capable then many other crypto have faster transaction services on a larger scale such as ripple and others

Although I donít know the reason why, I also believe that nobody can tell the reason why except those that are working for Amazon, they are the only ones that can tell why its not to be accepted by them cause they know how their system works. IT would be easier to pay or accept money in Bitcoin than on Amazon without any restrictions.

I don't think it is a good move by amazon as they might already see other who are embracing the blockchain technology into their business. For me, there's nothing wrong with that move but it's a move that make amazon not to left behind against its competitors.

I know a lot of people will side for Amazon to accept Bitcoin but Iím not in support of that. It doesnít sound like a good idea to me for the e-commerce giant (Amazon) to accept Bitcoin.

First of all, Bitcoin is volatile and they are not sure of the future regulation of Bitcoin. Another thing will be difficulty in processing returns, so Bitcoin is not good idea for Amazon to accept. Itís best that people buy gift cards, there are lots of sites that can sell Amazon gift cards to you which you buy with Bitcoin.

Indeed this is what bothers me sometimes, not just in the E-market but also in the physical markets that accepts these payments. How would they manage to realize its value in order to be recognized as a revenue or sales? It might cause more losses whenever market falls. Not like that their suppliers would also accept Bitcoin anyway, unless such agreement of payment method could be made. It still extends to both parties not just particularly for the seller and supplier.

For the price fluctuations Amazon may decide to take the risk in accepting bitcoin payments. The main problem will be with the customers. I once saw my transaction take close to 24 hours before it got confirmed. Until this issue is solved, many customers will not enjoy the service well even if Amazon decides to accept bitcoin.

If Amazon is through their  payment system start in bitcoin , I would certainly welcome them to this negative decision. Through bitcoin's formally used bitcoin's transaction will be used. The general public will know better about this and bitcoin will increase. And bitcoin will gradually start at all commercial centers And bitcoin will gradually start use at all commercial centers.

This is my personal opinion. I do not know how much the argument could be.

It could also turn Amazon on a black marketplace. Which is exactly what Amazon doesn't want. The company doesn't need to some kind of bad buzz like how BlackPage and VivaStreet got before. Most people forget to think about that.
Not only Amazon has its own payment processor (AmazonPay) it can see BTC as a competitor (it could also be an argument).

Amazon must have considered this decision. We'll see how it works, whether Bitcoin payments will encounter obstacles and harm bitcoin or vice versa, making the market increasingly Bitcoin rise.

Yes, but still, we didn't get any exact clarification whether they are accepting the Bitcoin or not. I think if they start accepting the Bitcoin definitely it will influence great impact on product purchases through Amazon which could be very easier for Bitcoin holders.

it'll still be based on centralization while we are here for opposite trading principles i guess.

There's an opinion Amazon is working on something huge involving the BTC payment method, yes. If so they need to offer us the possibility to stay decentralized which is essential to all crypto i think. For now, I'm using ModulTrade and hoping more people could make use of it, as it's free shipment smart-contract decentralized marketplace.  Also looking forward to expanding the Blockchain technologies throughout the world.

obstacles? oh... sure thing mate, the majority isn't aware of the possibilities Blockchain can give them. So we need to first educate the audience to show Blockchain is is the technology of the future.

too early to accept this payment method.  the governments have just started incorporating crypto into daily lives and accept it on the highest levels.

things like this are not a problem because payment transactions using bitcoin are better than using complicated traditional transactions, bitcoin provides a lot of convenience. I believe that in the next few years there will be more people who will accept bitcoin as payment.

why not move to the smart-contract based platforms offering just the same then?

The #1 reason Amazon is doing this is to tie addresses to names and faces.

Bitcoin wonít be fit for Amazon. You say this, yes cause youíre good with it, but do you ever put yourself in their shoes and wonder what may happen to the world e-commerce giant if they choose to follow the crypto route? Thatís never a good idea, so it is best for them to continue the way are doing. There are already sites like purse.io for those that choose to buy with BTC. And there is even overstock.com.

yes you are correct about this if the transaction takes long it wouldn't be any good. It would only demote bitcoin.

It'd be awesome if it happens, but yeah! it is also going to be a great embarrassment if people are gonna wait 12hrs for the transaction to be Validated!

If Amazon start accepting bitcoins, it will encourage many sellers to start accepting bitcoins as a payment method. Paypal will eventually be finished once bitcoin is implemented and accepted everywhere.
