Title: Can I use multiple drivers for AMD on the same system?
Post by: modestminer on November 09, 2017, 02:52:53 PM
Ive got 3 cards in my mining rig. Ideally I would run my 2 rx480 as dedicated miners on the AMD blockchain driver, and my rx570 on the most recent AMD driver. This would allow my to dual purpose the 570 for mining when idle, but leave me an option for gaming when desired.

Am I asking for too much?

Can no problem. On my old installation running at the same time AMD R9 200, RX480 and RX580. But I think you will have problems with mining. During operation, the GPU generates much heat. In order to avoid overheating of the GPU must be removed from the computer case. How are you going to play games? If the GPU will remain inside the housing you will destroy it.

Sindikat, the question was is it possible to have two different driver versions, not different cards :)

Modestminer, yes, you are asking too much - you can run only same driver version.

NO.

You can only run ONE driver version for AMD on a single system.

Ditto NVidia, ditto Intel, ditto any of the small fry that might still exist.

Maybe with a KVM PCI-E passthrough?

But why you don't want to RUN all your cards on Blockchain driver?

That's what I'm doing now, but the blockchain driver is inadequate for significant gaming loads. AMD makes reference to this in their release notes, and after testing last night I can confirm. Not the same experience as with current driver offerings. Tonight I'll install current drivers and retest my hash rates. Then I'll be better informed about where I'm going to compromise.

Not a big deal really. My goal with this rig was a hybrid mining/gaming/homeoffice build and its been great in that regard. Now I'm just trying to find the balance between reliability and the last 2-3% of performance.

Unless you're mining ETH (or possibly the spinoffs like ETC), the "regular" drivers work the same as the "blockchain" drivers.

Good info! Thank you.

Would the Dagger pools fall under ETC mining?  Im using Nicehash and it doesn't often have me mining in those pools. My 480s almost never mine on Dagger pools, and my 570 only occasionally.

Because the blockchain drivers don't work for squat (when they work AT ALL) for a lot of gaming.
