Can anybody explain me what airdrop is ?

If you see the words "airdrop", run.  It's always a scam.  And when it's not, it's still a scam.

The giveaway of coins for free from a new project.

Sometimes they ask for ETH in exchange, or data like your public keys, telephone... if that is the case it's a scam.

Sometimes they call it airdrop but it's a signature campaign, like DeepOnion. But the original idea of an airdrop is a free giveaway of coins in order to create a user base for a new coin.

it's like give away from dev for people to make their ICO success, they may give you free coin after they ICO ended.

airdrop are a way for the dev to distribute the coin with a gaveaway that are not allowed anymore here, when this happened the dev was obliged to redirect user to another site and it was not that ideal, now with airdorp they can do good ditribution without getting their thread closed, i think they are better than ico, where you need to invest to get your airdrop

Airdrop is the devs pretty much giving you a free amount of coins, sometimes depending on how much BTC you have in your wallet, just so they're sure you're not just some guy who made multiple bitcointalk accounts to claim airdrops multiple times.

Whether or not the coins are worth anything or do anything at all, they don't ask you to pay for anything, they just give you coins for free; hence the name "airdrop". Airdrops are only a scam if they ask you to hand over your wallet's private keys or something similar.

it's free money basically but nowadays they usually just want to scam you for your key, just be careful there.

airdrop is the person who distributes his money for free to find the many community in his project.

The giveaway of coins for free from a new project. sometimes you need a status of full member or member but not newbie to claim an airdrop, you must read the instruction given away by the admin of the coins. you also need ETH wallet or BTC depends on the coins

Free token/coins after you joined/works for their project ICO, minimum joined airdrop is jr.member rank so you can join on it  ;)

Airdrop is like distributed tokens/ coins to the comunity.its like giving away for their coins to be recognized.

If airdrop is like giveaway, why some moderators disallow giveaway activities in some board?
I forget found that statement on which board. I read on a lock thread that giveaway is forbid.

I have read where it is advised that newbies keep away from airdrops. How true is it?

Airdrop is kind of campaign which give its participant free coin by doing small thing like just registration only.

So basically airdrop is for distributing your own coins to other people for free? Why do they need private key? Isn't it possible just to send coins via ethereum?

I too was wondering about what an airdrop is. This is interesting information to consider for a newbie.

when we are talking about airdrop, we think of a helicopter or parachute airdrop, it means that a supply or goods are sent for example to soldiers that are assigned in a certain place that lacks supplies. It contains some foods that are needed for their survival. It is dropped from above by a helicopter or by parachutes. When we are talking about cryptocurrency, it is also the same,not in the manner of dropping from above. It is a free  giveaway of coins that is used by some projects that has just started to gain its popularity and its potential users that will put coins to their project.

The long answer is that if everyone that participates in the airdrop cooperates with each other then the coin yes it will be worth it.

An airdrop can be several things. For most coins it is something you have to do like sign up at a site to get access to the coins from an airdrop. For some it is just 'be' on a site or 'have' coins in a seperate wallet.

It's a nice way to make a little bit of coins from doing pretty much nothing.

It's basically a scammy method of getting free marketing.
