Title: Need help building GTX1070 GPU mining Rig
Post by: Blitz1 on November 22, 2017, 06:49:07 AM
Hi,

I'm creating my first mining rig and I have decided to go with Zotac GTX 1070 as Zotac provide 5 years warranty. But since there are so many editions available in the market, I'm confused which one to pick.

I have the following options with me regarding GPU:

a> ZOTAC 1070 8GB DDR5
b> ZOTAC 1070 Amp Edition
c> ZOTAC 1070 Amp Extreme

I plan to mine Ethereum. Please suggest me which of these will be the most efficient comparing the hash rate with power consumption. Which one will be more profitable?
Thank you very much :)

The choice depends very much on the price at which you can get these cards.
I tested for ethereum even a mini model that proved very good in the rig.
But my rig is constructed that all card take fresh air.

If you want to mine Etherium than it is very important to have fast memory for your card. The best options here is Samsung memory. I think you have to research which memory installed on this models typically . But I think a - have Micron memory, as for b and c - you have to check yourself

From the models of the cards a simple google search would have told you that Zotac AMP Extreme edition is the card where Zotac has gone all out and is the better performing everywhere including mining compared to the other two, however I don't know about the power consumption but it should not top 150-180 watt. This is the card with 3 cooling fans from Zotac and the better made. Also since ethereum is a memory impacted algorithm a Samsung memory would be nice to have as it supports better overclocking from MSI Afterburner compared to Hynix,Elpida and Micron memories.

But I believe that any of these three models will behave similarly in mining so get the ones you find the cheapest considering that profitability in mining altcoins is not what it used to be.

Some users able to get 510-520 sols in mining zec for a ZOTAC 1070 Amp Extreme and a decent hash compared to ETH mining @30-32mhs

 its my bet

Thank you for replying. I'm getting the cards at the following price:

a> ZOTAC 1070 8GB DDR5 mini $540
b> ZOTAC 1070 Amp Edition $585
c> ZOTAC 1070 Amp Extreme $615

I'm getting ZOTAC 1070 8GB DDR5 (dual fan) at cheapest. Mini is not available in the market (out of stock) right now.

According to my research on memory chip:
ZOTAC 1070 Amp Edition $585  uses Micron
ZOTAC 1070 Amp Extreme uses Samsung memory
Don't know about the mini edition.

Which card will be worth buying?

Go for the AMP Extreme, yes you will pay about 80 USD more in the beginning but over the long run it is very much worth it. With a bit of overclocking at MSI Afterburner you can easily get at 500 h/s in mining Zcash which uses the Equihash algorithm which is a Nvidia friendly algorithm. You can opt to mine Monero with Cryptonight algorithm which will reduce your power bill and is not power hungry. Samsung memory is worth more than 80 USD over the long run. I would buy this one.

First of all, those are quite high prices for gtx 1070. You might want to consider other models, I guess you're not in the US and 1070s do tend to be more expensive in other countries. But 1060s often aren't, so they might be a better choice.

Second, what kind of "research" led you to believe that you'll get Samsung memory with your 1070? No one has been installing Samsung chips on their 1070s for months, not Zotac and not anyone else. Maybe some mining-specific cards come with it, but I've only seen mining-specific 1060s so far, it doesn't seem like 1070s or 1080s went into production at all (and even if they did, you won't like them since they've got 3 months warranty or something). If your "research" is reading some dude's "review" on amazon about how the card he bought 6 months ago came with Samsung chips, then it's no research at all. The chances of you getting a brand new 1070 with Samsung memory from a store today are ~ 1%.

ETH mining on the GTX 1070 is a bad idea - the ONLY reason the 1070 got used as a ETH mining card is that the good AMD ETH mining cards for a while were in the SAME PRICE RANGE (and both got into the same range as GTX 1080 pricing for a while), so it made sense THEN to spend $450 on a GTX 1070 that would mine 30 Mhash/sec with a hair better power efficiency than a RX 470/480/570/580 that would "only" manage 26-29 Mhash/sec after BIOS modes for ABOUT THE SAME PRICE.

Now that the RX cards are consistently available at 60% OR LESS of the price of the 1070 and still dropping towards pre-shortage pricing, there is no reason to even CONSIDER ETH mining on a 1070.

Nobody ever even ANNOUNCED a mining-specific GTX 1070 model, and it's starting to look like the "mining specific" 1080 model that was rumored may have turned out to be the GTX 1070 ti instead.

At least one and I believe 2 models of the Sapphire RX 470 "mining" card line are specified to have Samsung memory - but those Sapphire mining cards are the only ones I have seen where the memory brand IS specified.
