Title: Creating the World’s First Bitcoin Wallet for the Blind
Post by: futureofeth on November 26, 2017, 09:32:16 AM

One of the most secure methods to store digital currencies is a hardware wallet. But most of the hardware wallets do not support usage for blind people – until now.

There are many different ways in which users can store their Bitcoin and experts strongly advise people not to store their cryptocurrencies on online exchanges, however, since they tend to be primary targets for hackers and other cybercriminals. Of all the available options, hardware wallets are the most secure option for individuals and companies to securely store their Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

The Trezor and Ledger Nano S are currently the most popular and secure hardware wallets on the market and, although both are high-quality devices, they both suffer from the same shortcoming – lack of support for blind users. A Kentucky-based developer named Adam Newbold is on a mission to build a unique hardware wallet designed specifically for the blind.

The goal behind the IcyWallet is to offer a 100% free and open source hardware wallet for blind people to store their Bitcoin. Newbold also stated in the article that he is not planning to become a manufacturer of hardware wallets, but rather to offer disabled people the same opportunity to secure their digital currencies.

Like a year ago such kind of topic was discussed on the forum, like "is bitcoin available for blind people?" and that moment, as I remember, the biggest part of forum's users said that blind people can't use bitcoin and other crypto currencies themselves, without a help. It seems now the problem is getting solving and the first step this wallet. I would like to know more information about it's technical characteristics and look, but the link the author posted doesn't give any information alike. If someone know more about it, please, share the link ;)

Though this project is still in it's very very early stages(as only a few functionalities are really working), it's a very interesting project. Connecting a sound device and a keyboard is definitely a good idea for input and output.

Probably not the final look of the product, but for those who are curious, here's how it currently looks like(source: https://icywallet.com/):

Extraordinary. Apparently there are also people who develop the Bitcoin Wallet for the blind. Surely this will open up an opportunity for the blind, in order to enter the world of crypto with their own savings. Nice.

Let's decentralize knowledge by decentralizing access. .The software can be technically accessible but still really hard to use for people with disabilities. But yes, maybe we could get a bit further with better automatic tools.

It is good to see that we, the btc community, care for other people. This is really something that I haven't looked at but yes this is needed indeed. Keep up the good work!  :)

Honestly, I see no point in this. What percentage of the population would use this? From a practical viewpoint, this does not seem like a need to them. I have to admit that this is still pretty cool, and I wonder how that works. I mean someone can just 'stalk' them and steal their coins anyways, let's see their mechanism behind this if it is successful...  ???

Regardless of anything, the idea of giving chance to the blind people is a very noble idea. I personally feel very happy that there are still people who care about each other especially to the disabled people.

The percentage of Bitcoin users that are blind.  If this percentage was similar to the general population (https://nfb.org/fact-sheet-blindness-and-low-vision), it would be moderately high.
From a practical viewpoint, this does not seem like a need to them.
Bitcoin relies on trustlessness.  Blind people should not have to rely on someone else to use a secure BTC wallet effectively.

However, the article is ignoring other possible secure ways to store coins, such as paper wallets.  Hardware wallets are touted as the "most secure way" to store BTC, and while they are considered very secure at the moment, there is no guarantee that this is the case.
